For everyday meal prep, basket capacity matters more than a large-sounding bowl measurement: greens packed too tightly may not wash or dry well.
Start with the batch you actually wash
Think about how many servings or meal-prep days you wash at once. The basket holds the greens; the bowl catches water. Their capacities are different measurements, so compare basket volume with the batch you expect to spin rather than treating bowl capacity as usable greens capacity.

In its January 2023 review, Epicurious warned that tightly packed greens in a small basket can trap water and grit and take longer to clean. That makes a spinner that fits your usual batch a better everyday choice than one that looks large on the counter but forces you to cram in greens.

Read capacity figures carefully
OXO’s U.S. product specifications list a 6.22-quart bowl and a 4.95-quart basket. Those figures describe separate parts, not two interchangeable measures of capacity. Epicurious reported that the OXO model it tested had a capacity of over six quarts, while the tested Farberware model was 6.6 quarts; these are the review’s reported figures and should not be assumed to use the same measurement basis as OXO’s current bowl and basket specifications.

Choose a mechanism you will use comfortably
Home salad spinners use pump, crank, lever, or pull-cord mechanisms. Consider whether the controls feel manageable when the basket is full, whether you can operate the spinner with one hand, and whether its base stays put as you spin. A brake is useful when you want to stop the basket without waiting for it to slow on its own.
OXO’s listed design includes a press knob, non-slip base, and brake. Epicurious also treated easy operation and an effective brake as useful qualities in its testing. These are practical features to weigh, not a guarantee that one mechanism will feel best to every user.

Consider drying claims in context
A spinner removes surface water after washing; it does not make every kind of produce equally dry under every load. Food Network’s June 3, 2026 review reported 17 percent residual moisture after about 20 seconds when it tested the 6.22-quart OXO spinner with two cups of spring mix. That result belongs to that review’s specific model, produce, quantity, and test method—not to salad spinners in general or to a guaranteed home result.
When comparing published tests, check what greens or herbs were used, how much was loaded, and how long the spinner ran. Results from different reviewers may not be directly comparable if their methods differ.

Check how the spinner cleans and dries between uses
Greens are not the only thing that gets wet: the basket, bowl, and lid need attention too. Look at whether the lid opens or comes apart, whether the basket is easy to rinse, and whether the components you want to wash are dishwasher-safe. Epicurious noted that inaccessible lid crevices can be troublesome and recommended thorough air drying. OXO says its lid disassembles and the product is dishwasher-safe.
Consumer Reports’ July 27, 2026 article quotes its food-safety research and testing manager, Sana Mujahid: “The drier the greens, the better when storing after washing.” The same article quotes nutritionist Amy Keating describing a way to check for dirt before draining: “If you fill the salad spinner with water and gently move around the greens, then pull out the basket, you can often see dirt and debris before you dump the water.”

Balance storage, material, and extra uses
Spinners take up space, so check where the bowl, basket, and lid will go when they are not in use. A collapsible design may suit a small kitchen, but Epicurious found capacity and sturdiness compromises in one collapsible model it tested. Glass or stainless-steel versions may also work as serving bowls, but consider their weight, cost, and storage needs alongside that extra use.
The trade-off is simple: a larger bowl is useful only if its size works for your normal batch and your kitchen. If it is awkward to store or handle, a more compact model may be the more practical everyday tool.
