The best pool booster pump is the one that matches your pressure-side cleaner, electrical supply and plumbing—not simply the one with the biggest-looking specification. Manufacturer information supports comparing three Pentair models, but it does not establish an independently tested winner. Check the cleaner model first, then confirm connections, voltage and installation requirements.
What a pool booster pump does
A pool booster pump supplies pressurized water to a compatible pressure-side automatic cleaner. It is a separate piece of pool equipment, not a household water-pressure booster and not a replacement for the pool’s main filtration pump. The filter pump supplies filtered water to the booster; the booster should not run when the filter pump is off.

Compare the published specifications
The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. The manufacturers publish different kinds of performance information, so they do not support a direct efficiency or cleaning-performance ranking.

These products’ specifications are not like-for-like: LA01N has a published pressure-and-flow point, HydroBoost lists THP and WEF, and the LA-MS05 page gives another set of details. A higher-looking figure alone does not show that a pump will clean better in your pool. Use the cleaner maker’s required flow and pressure to assess suitability.

How to choose the right pump
1. Identify the cleaner model
Start with the exact cleaner model and check its manual or manufacturer compatibility information. Pentair lists LA01N for Legend Platinum, Legend Platinum Truck Series and Legend automatic cleaners. A Pentair Legend cleaner page also names LA01N and LA-MS05 as compatible part numbers, but that cleaner page is marked discontinued; treat it as a model-specific compatibility reference, not a current cleaner recommendation. Do not assume compatibility with other pressure-side cleaners.
2. Match the electrical supply and plumbing
Verify the available supply and wiring configuration with the pump’s instructions and a qualified professional. Check the return-line arrangement and thread sizes before ordering: LA01N has 3/4-inch ports, while LA-MS05 and HydroBoost list 1-inch connections. LA01N’s page says its hose and adapters are included; the other two list hose accessory kit 353040 separately. Confirm which adapters and hose your cleaner installation needs.

3. Decide whether you are replacing or adding a pump
For a replacement, use the existing pump’s model, fittings and electrical setup as a starting point, but still verify compatibility with the cleaner. For a new installation, account for the filtered return line, equipment-pad layout, required flow and a control arrangement that prevents the booster from running without the filter pump.

Installation and operation requirements
Pentair’s HydroBoost installation guide gives model-specific placement and startup instructions. It says the booster connects to a return line after the filter and must receive filtered water. Follow the exact manual for the pump being installed; these HydroBoost dimensions should not be generalized to other models.

- Pipe size: The HydroBoost guide specifies at least 1-inch PVC and recommends a larger suction pipe when a 1-inch run exceeds 5 feet.
- Location: For HydroBoost, install at least 5 feet from a pool or spa wall (9.8 feet for Canadian installations), at least 3 feet from a heater outlet, no more than 8 feet above or 3 feet below water level, and in a ventilated place protected from excessive moisture.
- Before startup: The filter pump must be running and a cleaner connected. Pentair specifies at least 20 GPM of filtration-system flow for HydroBoost operation to avoid dry running.
- Run sequence: The HydroBoost guide calls for starting the filter pump at least 30 minutes before the booster and stopping it 30 minutes after the booster. Running the booster while the filter pump is off can damage the pump.
Pentair’s guide says, “Only qualified service professionals should install the booster pump.” Electrical bonding and wiring are safety-critical: Pentair’s universal booster pump manual calls for a solid copper bonding conductor of at least 8 AWG in the stated U.S. context and at least 6 AWG for Canadian installations. Have a qualified professional follow the exact pump manual and applicable local requirements.

- Consider LA01N if your cleaner is among the Legend models Pentair names, its 3/4-inch ports fit your plumbing, and the included hose and adapters meet your setup’s needs.
- Consider LA-MS05 if its 1-inch connections and published pressure-and-flow specification suit your cleaner and installation, and you have accounted for any separate hose adapters required.
- Consider HydroBoost if its published electrical and connection details suit your setup and you can meet its manual’s flow, placement and operating requirements. Its hose kit is separate.
These are compatibility-led options, not a proven best-to-worst ranking. The manufacturer pages do not establish a universal winner or independent comparative performance across the three models.
