If a Steam game has no system requirements, treat compatibility as unknown—not as a yes. Before paying, identify your exact PC components and operating system, ask the developer or publisher for the supported setup, and look for game-specific evidence from closely matching hardware. Community reports can help, but they cannot replace official requirements or guarantee performance. Check Steam’s current refund terms before relying on a refund as a fallback.
First, confirm what information is actually missing
Open the exact game’s Steam store page and check whether the requirements section is absent or merely incomplete. Confirm which PC operating systems the game supports; “PC” does not automatically mean Windows, macOS, and Linux are all supported.

Compatibility has separate software and hardware dimensions. Steam advises checking both the operating system and the game’s hardware requirements. Its platform availability guidance is a useful reminder that a game may not support the platform you use, even if your computer seems powerful enough.
Write down your exact PC and OS details
Broad labels such as “Core i5” or “GeForce” are not enough to compare hardware. Record the full CPU and graphics processor model, whether each is a laptop or desktop part, installed RAM, operating system and version, and available storage. If you use macOS or Linux, note the exact version and whether you expect to run the game natively or through a compatibility layer.

Find the details in Windows
- CPU and RAM: Open Settings > System > About and note the processor model and installed RAM. You can also open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, then select Performance to see processor and memory information.
- Graphics processor: In Task Manager, select Performance and inspect the GPU entries for their full model names. If the computer has both integrated and discrete graphics, record both.
- Windows version: Open Settings > System > About and note the Windows edition and version.
- Available space: Open Settings > System > Storage or File Explorer to check free space on the drive where you would install the game.
A matching RAM figure by itself proves little. The CPU, GPU, operating-system support, and any additional requirements can also determine whether a game launches and how well it runs. Steam’s performance troubleshooting guidance discusses requirements, memory, and drivers; its launch troubleshooting guidance notes that hardware and software configurations differ between systems.
Ask the developer or publisher for the missing requirements
Use the developer’s or publisher’s official support channel, such as its website or support page linked from the Steam listing. Ask for the game’s minimum and recommended specifications, and whether your operating system is supported.

Then compare the answer against your exact models, not just a product-family name or a larger-looking model number. If the developer or publisher cannot confirm support, the available evidence still does not establish that your PC is compatible.

Use benchmarks and player reports as supporting evidence
When official requirements are unavailable, search for reports or benchmarks of the same game on the same CPU and GPU—or on closely comparable models. Check whether the tested graphics card is a laptop or desktop version, and compare the test’s resolution, graphics settings, game version, and any reported frame rate with what you want to achieve.
These details matter because “it runs” can mean anything from reaching the main menu to playing smoothly at a particular resolution. A report from a different patch, a dissimilar GPU, or a different laptop configuration may not predict your result. Steam’s launch guidance warns that computers at or near stated requirements can still have launch or performance problems, so even a close match is not a guarantee.

Community discussions can surface useful leads, but they are not authoritative specifications. One Steam community thread captures the practical question—“How do I check if a game will run on my computer?”—and the confusion that can arise when comparing hardware names. Treat those reports as clues to investigate, not as a substitute for confirmation from the developer or publisher.
Set your own standard for “will run”
Decide what outcome you need before interpreting any evidence. Starting successfully, staying stable, and delivering an acceptable frame rate at your preferred resolution and settings are different goals. If a game is near a stated minimum, Steam says performance or launch issues can still occur; missing requirements make that uncertainty greater, not smaller.
Steam’s compatibility labels also need to be read in context. PC Gamer reported on 13 July 2026 that Steam pages showed Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and SteamOS compatibility information for some games while others remained unrated. These labels concern Valve’s designated devices or platforms; they do not certify that a title will work on an arbitrary Windows PC or replace its hardware requirements. See PC Gamer’s coverage.
Check refund terms before you buy
Steam provides a route to request refunds, but do not assume that a purchase will qualify or treat a refund as a guaranteed trial.
