Check the platform before following save instructions: the original Nintendo 64 release, Majora’s Mask 3D on Nintendo 3DS, and the Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics app on Switch do not use identical save systems. Third-party emulators have controls and behaviors that vary by emulator.

How to save in the original Nintendo 64 game
Make a lasting in-game save with the Song of Time
- Play the Song of Time.
- Allow the return to the First Day to finish. The game saves progress as the cycle resets to 6:00 a.m. on the First Day.
- Wait until the “Dawn of the First Day” message appears before turning off the console.
This is the regular cycle save: it preserves important progress, but not every item or activity from the current three-day cycle. The game’s 72 in-game hours are the three-day period before the game ends if Link does not avert the outcome.
Use an Owl Statue to pause a session
- If the Owl Statue is not active, hit it with the sword.
- Interact with the statue and confirm the interrupt save.
- Wait for the Title Screen before powering off.
- When you resume, select the file marked with an owl.
This save records your current status for the next continuation, but it is consumed when you load it. Nintendo’s N64 manual cautions: “Once you continue that game, though, the saved game will be deleted, so after continuing your quest, be sure to save again using the SONG OF TIME or visit one of the OWL STATUES again.”

What does the Song of Time keep or reset?
When you play the Song of Time, Link goes back to the First Day and the game resets temporary cycle details. The original N64 manual describes the lasting save as preserving game progress, not as a complete snapshot of everything in the current cycle.

Plan around the reset: deposit rupees you want to keep, and do not assume a key, fairy, consumable, or completed temporary activity will carry into the next cycle.

How to use save states on Switch’s Nintendo 64 Classics
Nintendo calls this feature a Suspend Point. It preserves a platform-level point in the emulated session, whereas the Song of Time is the game’s own cycle-saving mechanic.
- While playing, open the Suspend Menu. Nintendo’s support instructions list Minus on Joy-Con or standard Switch controls, or ZR on the N64 controller.
- Choose Create Suspend Point.
- Select a slot. Nintendo documents up to four Suspend Point slots for each game.
- To resume later, open the Suspend Menu, choose Load Suspend Point, and select the saved point.
Overwriting a Suspend Point cannot be undone, according to Nintendo Support. For a safer approach, use the game’s Song of Time when you want to preserve its intended cycle progress, and create a Suspend Point before a risky section when you want to return to a particular moment. Access to the N64 Nintendo Classics library requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, according to the same support page.

How saving works in Majora’s Mask 3D
- Stand in front of an owl statue or quill statue.
- Press A to save.
The 3DS manual explicitly says that returning to the First Day does not automatically save your game. Do not switch off or reset the system, or remove the game card or SD card, while saving. The manual also warns against using external accessories or software to modify save data.
What if you are playing on an emulator?
There is no single set of emulator save-state instructions that applies to every app. Menu names, buttons, save formats, compatibility, and whether a state persists can vary by emulator and version. Check that emulator’s documentation for its save-state procedure; without the emulator name and version, exact steps cannot be established.

Keep the distinction clear: an emulator save state is an emulator feature, not the N64 game’s Song of Time save. Do not assume a state is portable between emulator versions or that it replaces a backup of the game’s in-game save.

Nintendo’s original N64 manual says the game requires an Expansion Pak. This requirement applies to the original-console release, not to the 3DS remake or Switch Nintendo 64 Nintendo Classics.
