If important details such as performance or feature completeness remain uncertain, waiting for independent post-release evidence is a sensible choice—not a prediction that the game will be defective.
Check that the game matches your platform and the way you want to play
Start with the official store listing or publisher page for the specific version you plan to buy. A game’s title alone may not tell you whether a listing is for your console generation, PC, or a bundle with different entitlements.

- Platform and compatibility: Confirm the supported console model or PC platform. Check whether a cross-generation version, upgrade, or bundle changes what you receive.
- Modes and online requirements: Find out whether the modes you want are available at launch and whether the game requires an internet connection, publisher account, online service, or subscription.
- PC hardware: Compare the current minimum and recommended requirements with your computer’s components. Requirements can change, so use the listing for the version you are considering.
- Edition contents: Compare the base game with any higher tiers. Identify what is actually included—such as expansions, cosmetic items, an expansion pass, early access, or physical extras—and decide whether each item is worth the difference to you.

Judge the available evidence by the game’s development state
Promotional trailers and publisher descriptions can explain a game’s premise, but they do not establish how it plays or performs on the platform you intend to use. Look for current gameplay evidence, and note which platform and build it shows. A preview or pre-release build is not automatically representative of every version at launch.

If the game is in Early Access
Early Access means the game is playable while it continues toward a full release. Valve advises buyers to consider the current state of the game and read the developer’s Early Access information. Developers decide when a title leaves Early Access, and some may not be completed. Valve’s Early Access guidance explains the model.
If the game offers Advance Access
Advance Access is early opportunity to play before the official release, not a development model. Its availability is determined by the publisher or developer. Check when access begins and what it means for the store’s refund terms. Valve’s Advance Access guidance distinguishes it from Early Access.

Read the rating and content information, but understand its limits
Use the rating category and content descriptors to assess age suitability and the kinds of material the game contains. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) says physical games are reviewed before release using publisher disclosures, including a questionnaire and video covering typical gameplay, missions, cutscenes, and relevant extreme content. Digital-only games follow a different ratings process; see the ESRB ratings process.
A rating is not a complete account of everything a player may encounter. The Federal Trade Commission advises checking ratings and content information, while noting that updates may make reviews and ratings differ from the latest version. ESRB ratings also do not cover in-game advertisements or user-created content, such as custom modes. Consider those factors alongside the rating, especially when deciding whether a game is suitable for a child. The FTC’s guidance on kids and video games describes these limits.

Check the preorder and refund rules for the store you will use
Do not assume that Steam, PlayStation Store, and Nintendo use the same payment timing or cancellation conditions. The policies below are examples from the named stores’ cited pages; country, retailer, and current terms can affect what applies to a particular purchase.
Steam
Steam’s refund page, last updated April 23, 2024, says its standard offer applies to games requested within two weeks of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. For a pre-purchased game that cannot be played before release, the 14-day period begins on release day; the two-hour playtime limit still applies. Early Access and Advance Access playtime counts toward that limit. Steam says a preorder may be refunded before release; after release, its stated conditions include requesting within two weeks of release and having played less than two hours. Check the current Steam refund terms, especially if early access to play is included.

PlayStation Store
PlayStation’s U.S. preorder-cancellation guidance says eligibility depends on when you request cancellation and whether the main content has begun downloading or streaming. Automatic downloads may therefore matter. Consult the PlayStation Store preorder cancellation rules for the applicable details.

Nintendo
Nintendo’s support page says eligible digital eShop preorders are charged no sooner than seven days before release. Physical pre-purchases through Nintendo Store are charged immediately, and the item ships after release. See Nintendo’s eShop Pre-Order and Pre-Load FAQ for its terms.
Decide whether buying now is worth the uncertainty
Buy now or preorder when the exact version, contents, and access timing fit your needs and you are comfortable with the available evidence. Consider waiting when a decision depends on unconfirmed performance, feature completeness, or review coverage. Waiting for independent post-release evidence is a practical way to reduce uncertainty; it does not imply that any specific new game has a problem.
