Collect the details that identify the hardware
Before searching, record the computer’s full make and model, service tag or product number, Windows edition and version, and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit. For a custom-built PC, note the motherboard model and the exact model of the missing component. A computer model and an add-in card or peripheral model are different identifiers; a PC maker’s driver page may not cover every separately installed component.

If the device is not identified by name, find its hardware ID in Windows:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Find the device. It may appear under a relevant category or as an unknown device, sometimes marked with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab, select Hardware Ids in the property list, and copy the displayed values. You can also check Compatible Ids.
Microsoft defines a hardware ID as “a vendor-defined identification string that Windows uses to match a device to a driver package.” Microsoft Learn explains hardware IDs; Windows uses hardware and compatible IDs to locate driver packages. A device may report several IDs, from more specific to more general, so copy them exactly rather than relying only on a vague Device Manager label.

Search trusted sources in order
Check Windows Update
First check Windows Update for a driver offered for your system. It may find a suitable package without requiring you to identify and install one manually. However, it may not list every historical driver: Microsoft’s June 19, 2025 notice about removing unwanted drivers from Windows Update reported that the first batch of legacy drivers was expired on February 23, 2026. Read Microsoft’s notice about the cleanup.
Check the computer maker’s support page
Search the PC manufacturer’s official support site using the exact model, service tag, or product number. This is the best starting point for a branded computer because its packages may be selected for that model’s configuration. Do not assume that a driver for a similarly named PC or a related model will work.
Check the component maker’s support page
For a discrete graphics card, network adapter, printer, or other component, identify the component maker and exact model as well. Check the manufacturer’s support page for the product revision, if applicable. Search the model and hardware ID together with the manufacturer’s name; an official archived support page or legacy download page may still be available after a product is discontinued.

Microsoft recommends checking the hardware manufacturer if Windows Update does not find a compatible driver. For manual downloads, Microsoft says: “Avoid downloading drivers from any websites other than the manufacturer’s official site.” See Microsoft’s driver-update guidance. If the manufacturer’s package is no longer available, a third-party listing with a matching filename or ID is not, by itself, proof that the package is authentic or safe.
Verify that a candidate driver fits
Before downloading or installing a package, compare its details against your system and device:
- Device: Does the package name the exact model, product revision, or hardware ID?
- Windows: Does it support your Windows release and edition?
- Architecture: Is it for 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, as applicable?
- Source: Is it hosted by Microsoft or the computer or component manufacturer?
- Package details: Check its release date and notes, and whether it is a complete installer or requires manual installation from an INF file.
- Signature: Does Windows accept the package, or does it report a signing or integrity problem?
Hardware-ID matching helps Windows identify driver candidates, but it does not establish that a package is safe, current, or compatible in every configuration. Do not choose a package just because its filename matches or its date is newest.

Install the package and prepare to recover
For a manual installation, use the manufacturer’s instructions when available. Microsoft’s general Device Manager route is to download the manufacturer’s package, extract it if needed, then point Windows to the folder containing the driver files:

If the PC is offline, you can download it on another computer and transfer the files.
- Extract the package if it is compressed or the manufacturer’s instructions require it.
- Open Device Manager, right-click the device, and choose Update driver.
- Select Browse my computer for drivers, choose the folder containing the extracted driver, and follow the prompts.
Windows installs the package if it recognizes a suitable driver. Administrators who are comfortable with command-line tools can also use Microsoft’s PnPUtil documentation for installing or updating driver packages from an elevated command prompt.
Before replacing a working driver, make a recovery plan if your system supports one: consider creating a restore point, retain the original installer, and note the current driver version. These precautions can help if the replacement causes problems, but they do not guarantee that every driver change can be rolled back.

Understand why a legacy driver may be blocked
A driver that worked on an older Windows installation may not load on a current one. Windows Code Integrity checks the integrity and trusted signature of kernel drivers. Microsoft’s policy page says an April 2026 security update means certain drivers signed under the expired cross-signed program are no longer trusted by default, although some legacy drivers remain covered by an allow list. Check Microsoft’s kernel-mode code-signing policy.
Do not treat disabling signature enforcement as a routine fix. First look for a signed package from the hardware maker or a driver delivered through Windows Update. If no supported package exists, weigh the security implications before considering any legacy-system workaround, especially if the computer needs network access.

If no compatible driver is available
The right choice depends on what the hardware does, what software you need, and the security requirements of the PC. Options include:

- Use a supported operating system that the hardware maker lists as compatible, if one is available and suitable.
- Keep the device on a legacy system isolated from networks when it must run older software or hardware and cannot be supported safely on a current system.
- Replace the component with hardware that has a supported driver for your Windows version.
- Accept limited functionality if Windows provides a basic driver but the manufacturer’s features are unavailable.
Windows 10 free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s driver-update guidance. An available driver does not make an unsupported operating system secure; check the support status of the operating system separately.
Without the exact device model or hardware ID and Windows version, it is not possible to confirm that a particular driver exists or works on your PC. Gather those details before deciding whether a candidate package is the right one.
