Before you pay, test the camera with a compatible lens, charged battery and memory card, take and review sample photos, and inspect the body for damage. A low shutter count is useful context—especially for a DSLR—but it is not proof that the camera is sound. Use the checklist below to uncover faults and judge whether the asking price reflects them.
Before you meet the seller
- Confirm the exact model and ask for a fresh, original JPEG or RAW file made with the camera. Ask about repairs, impacts, moisture exposure, known faults and what accessories are included.
- For a remote purchase, request evidence that the seller has the camera and can demonstrate its important functions. If you cannot test it, factor that uncertainty into the risk and compare it with tested listings that have clear return terms.
- Check the camera’s manual for its compatible lens mount, memory-card format and capacity, battery type, and features. These vary by model; do not assume your lens, card or battery will work.
- Bring a compatible, known-good lens, a charged compatible battery and a compatible memory card if possible. They help distinguish a camera fault from a faulty accessory.

Check image capture and the sensor
- Inspect the exposed sensor for visible scratches or damage without touching it.
- Take several photos of a detailed subject. If feasible, also photograph a simple, evenly lit scene.
- Review the actual files at high magnification. If you see an apparent defect, repeat the shot at ordinary exposure before deciding it is a persistent problem; a test condition can affect what appears in an image.
- Try available shutter modes and burst shooting. Watch for warning messages, inconsistent operation or missed frames.
A low count cannot rule out sensor damage or other faults. The sample files and hands-on tests matter too.
Interpret the shutter count in context
Ask for the shutter count and how it was obtained, then treat it as one clue rather than a pass/fail score. For a DSLR, it can be a strong indication of mechanical use. For a mirrorless camera, electronic-shutter photography and video may leave substantial use out of a mechanical shutter count.

There is no reliable model-independent count threshold established by the sources cited here. Compare the number with the exact model, physical condition, repair records, reported use and price; avoid generic lifespan or discount rules. As Ronalds Vilcins’s ShutterCount.org guide puts it, “The best used camera is rarely the one with the lowest number.”
Inspect the mount, lens and autofocus
Camera mount
Remove the lens and check the mount for bent areas, loose screws, impact marks, excessive play and damaged electronic contacts. Reattach a compatible lens and check for abnormal movement.
Autofocus
With a known-good lens, test single autofocus and continuous autofocus. Try focusing from near to far, in lower light and across several focus points, then inspect the resulting files. A failed focus test alone does not identify the cause: the lens, settings, firmware, calibration or camera body may be responsible. Included lens
If the lens is part of the sale, inspect its front and rear elements for scratches, haze or fungus. Operate the focus and zoom rings; test autofocus and stabilization where applicable. Treat these as practical checks, not a guarantee about repairability or image quality.
Test controls, displays and card slots
Controls
Try every command dial, joystick, directional control, menu, playback, autofocus, shutter and record button, mode dial, lock and custom button. Turn dials slowly and watch for skipped or doubled inputs.
Screen and viewfinder
- On the rear screen, check for dead pixels, discoloration, flicker, touch-response problems and a loose hinge. Move an articulated screen through its full range.
- On an optical viewfinder, look for haze, fungus, debris, focusing-screen damage or display problems.
- On an electronic viewfinder (EVF), check for dead pixels, flicker, color shifts, brightness changes, eye-sensor response, lag and dropouts.
Memory cards
Insert and remove a compatible card. Test each slot separately: check that its door latches, then make, save and review images from that slot. Do not assume a second slot works because the first one does. Neptune Photo’s checklist likewise emphasizes inspecting used cameras before buying.

Check ports, battery and body condition
Ports and connectors
Inspect relevant USB, HDMI, microphone and headphone ports for loose or bent sockets, cracked covers and cable wear. Connect a cable or device to test the ports you expect to use.

Check the battery, contacts, battery and card compartments, doors and seals for corrosion, residue, cracks or other damage that could be consistent with moisture exposure. If the battery performs poorly, include the cost of a compatible replacement in your offer; a weak battery alone need not disqualify an otherwise sound body.
Exterior and repair history
Check hot-shoe contacts, tripod socket, strap lugs, body seams and signs of impact or opening. Ask whether repairs were made and whether receipts are available; note the serial number and compare the seller’s account with any documentation.

Decide whether the price matches the condition
When comparing bodies, weigh the sensor, model-appropriate shutter-count context, autofocus, mount, slots, ports, evidence of moisture or impact, repair history and total price. Separate faults that prevent reliable use from cosmetic wear, and decide whether any issue is repairable and reflected in the asking price. No universal condition grade or repair quote is established here, so do not assume a visible fault has a predictable fix or cost.
If you cannot test a key function, treat it as unknown rather than working. Compare the risk and price with a tested camera offered under clear return terms.
