Before buying a new domain extension, check the exact name’s first-year and renewal prices, whether it is premium-priced, the extension’s registration rules, availability at your preferred registrar, and the terms for transferring and managing it. If the extension is newly announced, verify that it is operating and open for registration—not merely proposed or in an application process.
Compare the full cost of the exact domain
At checkout, note the price for the exact domain and extension, not just a headline promotion. Check the renewal quote, billing period, whether taxes are included, and whether optional add-ons are selected. Ask whether the name is classified as premium: a promotional price for ordinary registrations may not apply to a premium name.

ICANN’s 2017 Global Amendment to the Base New gTLD Registry Agreement generally requires registry operators to give registrars at least 180 calendar days’ notice of renewal-price increases, subject to exceptions. It also requires registries to offer registrars the option to obtain renewals at the previous price for one to ten years, at the registrar’s discretion. These are registry-to-registrar provisions, not a promise that a registrar will keep your retail price unchanged or let you renew early at the old price. ICANN’s 2017 amendment sets out the terms.

Confirm the extension and exact name are available at your registrar
Search for the exact spelling and extension at the registrar where you plan to manage the domain. An extension can be operational without being offered by every registrar. ICANN’s 2026 Applicant Guidebook says registrars may decide whether to enter into an agreement with each registry operator, and that gTLD domains generally must be registered through an ICANN-accredited registrar, with limited exceptions. See ICANN’s 2026 Applicant Guidebook.

Read the extension’s registration and use rules
Check the current registration policy for the specific extension as well as the registrar’s order terms. Look for eligibility requirements, reserved or blocked names, limits on who may register, and any use rules that could affect your intended website, email, or organization. Rules are extension-specific; a generic checklist cannot establish whether a particular name qualifies.
Check whether a new extension is actually operating
A public announcement or application does not mean an extension is ready for registrations. ICANN describes onboarding and technical testing before a gTLD becomes operational. Check the ICANN New gTLD Program and the registry’s current launch information for the extension you want. ICANN says its 2026 application window ran from 30 April through 12 August 2026; those dates do not establish that any specific application succeeded or that its extension is open to buy.
Review transfers and account control
Before you pay, find the registrar’s process and fees for transferring the domain to another registrar, retrieving authorization codes, managing DNS, and recovering account access. Check whether a transfer changes the registration term. Transfer availability, fees, and procedures can depend on the extension and registrar, so verify the terms for the exact combination rather than assuming they are universal.
Use a side-by-side check when comparing extensions
If you are choosing between specific extensions for the same name, compare the items that can change the practical cost and usability:
Rank #3
- First-year and renewal prices for the exact name, including premium pricing, billing period, taxes, and add-ons.
- Whether your preferred registrar offers both the extension and exact name.
- Eligibility, reserved-name, and use restrictions.
- For a recently introduced extension, its operational status and launch information.
- Transfer fees and account-management procedures.
There is no universally best extension without knowing the name, intended audience and use, relevant geography, budget, and registrar. Verify current prices and terms at checkout, since they depend on the exact domain, extension, provider, and purchase date.
