Before buying, verify what “desktop-class GPU” means in the exact model. Some compact gaming PCs use laptop GPUs; others are described as having a desktop-style graphics card. Then check independent game results for your target resolution, cooling and noise under sustained load, upgrade options, ports, and the space needed for the chassis, ventilation, and power supply. Those details determine whether the machine suits your games and setup—not the “desktop-class” label alone.
What does “desktop-class GPU” mean in this mini PC?
The phrase does not, by itself, identify the graphics chip’s physical implementation. Check the exact model and SKU’s specifications: is the GPU explicitly labeled a Laptop GPU, described as a desktop-style dedicated card, or supplied externally? Those are different arrangements, and the GPU family name alone does not tell you what can be upgraded.

For example, ASUS specifies the ROG GR70 with an RTX 5070 or RTX 5060 Laptop GPU, and the ROG NUC (2025) with up to an RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. Tom’s Guide describes the Minisforum G1 Pro as having a desktop-style dedicated RTX 5060. These descriptions should not be treated as interchangeable: check the manufacturer’s specification for the configuration you are buying and, where available, its GPU power information.

Will it run your games at your resolution and settings?
Look for independent results in the games you play, at the resolution and settings you plan to use. A frame-rate figure is useful only with its test context: game, resolution, graphics preset, upscaling or frame generation, and the tested configuration. A result at 1080p does not establish performance at 1440p or 4K, and results from different publications are not a head-to-head comparison.
For one concrete reference, TechRadar reports an average of 148 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Ultra on the ROG NUC. Treat that as TechRadar’s result under those stated conditions, not a general promise for other games or configurations. TechRadar’s gaming PC guide gives the result.
Prefer reviews that include sustained gaming or longer load tests as well as short benchmark runs. Check whether performance holds over time and whether the review states the settings and any upscaling used. There is no established harmonized independent side-by-side comparison of the desktop-style-GPU and laptop-GPU mini PCs cited here.

Can you upgrade the GPU, memory, or storage?
Check upgradeability separately for the GPU, RAM, and SSD. A mini PC can allow memory and storage changes while its CPU and GPU remain fixed. Confirm the access procedure, number of slots, supported capacities, and warranty terms for the exact SKU before opening the chassis.
| Example | What the cited source says is upgradeable | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS ROG GR70 | ASUS says users can access memory and M.2 storage; its 2025 announcement states support for up to 96 GB of memory. | Confirm the capacity and compatible modules for the configuration sold, plus the warranty terms. |
| ASUS ROG NUC (2025) | TechRadar reports RAM and SSD as upgrade paths, not the GPU. | Check the exact configuration and whether fixed graphics meet your expected needs. |
| Minisforum G1 Pro | Tom’s Guide describes two memory slots and a free second M.2 slot, with upgrade capacity up to 96 GB of memory and 8 TB of storage. | Verify current configuration, compatible modules and drives, and availability for your region. |
These are model-specific claims, not a guarantee that every version has the same internal layout. Sources: ASUS, TechRadar, and Tom’s Guide.
How does it cool, and how loud is it under load?
Compact systems have limited room for cooling, so look for independent evidence about sustained temperatures, clock behavior, and fan noise while gaming. Check where the air intakes and exhausts are and how much unobstructed space the manufacturer requires around them. A system that fits physically may still be a poor fit if a wall, shelf, or monitor stand blocks its airflow.

ASUS describes the GR70 as having a triple-fan cooling system and makes claims about keeping operating noise low. Those are manufacturer statements, not standardized independent measurements. PC Gamer says adequate cooling under heavy loads and quiet operation are among the criteria in its mini-PC selection and testing approach. See ASUS’s announcement and PC Gamer’s mini-PC guide.

Compare the exact model’s ports with the devices you plan to connect. Check display outputs and the number and resolution of displays supported, plus the USB, networking, and high-speed connections you need for storage, capture devices, and other accessories. Port availability varies by model; do not infer it from a product family name.
If your plan depends on an external GPU, confirm that the specific mini PC supports the connection and setup you intend to use. ASUS says the ROG NUC (2025)’s Thunderbolt 4 connection can connect external GPUs, storage, and capture cards. That does not establish external-GPU support for other mini PCs. How much space does the complete setup need?
Measure more than the computer itself. Include ventilation clearance, cables, stand or mounting hardware, and the external power brick if the model uses one. Check whether the machine has an internal or external power supply and where it will sit; the power supply can change the practical footprint of a small PC.
Compare that complete setup and its total cost with a small-form-factor (SFF) desktop if replacing the GPU later matters to you. A separately built SFF system can offer more upgrade flexibility, but card dimensions, power-connector clearance, and airflow constrain what fits. NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready guidance sets limits for labeled compatible cards of 151 mm maximum height, 304 mm maximum length, and 50 mm (2.5 slots) maximum thickness, and specifies additional case-clearance requirements. It applies to compatible SFF cases and cards; it does not certify that a prebuilt mini PC accepts a replacement GPU. Check the specific case, card, connector bend space, and airflow. NVIDIA’s SFF-Ready guidance was updated January 6, 2025.

ASUS states memory support up to 96 GB. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance or noise measurements. Check the configuration on sale and its complete port and warranty details. ASUS’s announcement.
ASUS ROG NUC (2025)
ASUS specifies configurations up to a Core Ultra 9 275HX and RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, with triple-fan cooling and Thunderbolt 4. TechRadar reports that the GPU is not upgradeable, identifies RAM and SSD as upgrade paths, and reports the 148 FPS Cyberpunk 2077 result at 1080p Ultra. The benchmark belongs to TechRadar’s test; it does not predict results in other games or configurations. ASUS’s product page and TechRadar’s guide.
Minisforum G1 Pro
Tom’s Guide describes a configuration with a Ryzen 9 8945HX, 32 GB DDR5, a 1 TB SSD, and a desktop-style dedicated RTX 5060. It reports two memory slots, a free M.2 slot, and capacity for up to 96 GB of memory and 8 TB of storage, as well as game observations for its tested settings. The article describes it as larger than tiny NUC-style systems. Configurations and stock can change, so verify the listing available to you. Tom’s Guide’s coverage.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before ordering
- Find the exact GPU name on the manufacturer specification sheet or seller listing. Confirm whether it is labeled a Laptop GPU, described as a desktop-style card, or used externally.
- Find independent results for your games at your target resolution and settings. Note upscaling and frame-generation use.
- Check sustained-load reviews for temperatures, performance over time, fan noise, and required intake and exhaust clearance.
- Confirm GPU, RAM, and SSD upgradeability individually. Check memory and M.2 slot counts, supported capacities, access instructions, and warranty terms.
- Match display outputs and other ports to your monitors and accessories. If you need an external GPU, confirm support on the exact model.
- Measure the chassis, ventilation space, power supply or brick, and cable layout. Compare the whole setup and total cost with an SFF desktop if future GPU replacement is important.
- Before paying, verify the local configuration, price, support, stock, and return terms; these can change.
