Then weigh roaming against local prepaid service and travel eSIMs, and account for the extra care a folding screen and hinge need around grit, water, charging and repairs.
Will the exact foldable work on your destination networks?
Do not rely on a phone’s 5G label or the model name alone. Cellular bands and configurations can differ by market, and service depends on the destination carrier as well as the handset. Samsung says 5G and LTE availability varies by market, carrier and network conditions; Apple likewise advises checking cellular-band support for cross-border use. Start with the exact model number and sales region, then compare its supported bands with the carriers you may use in each country.

- Confirm the phone’s precise regional SKU and its listed LTE and 5G bands.
- Check that your intended destination carrier supports the model and offers service on compatible bands where you will travel.
- Ask about coverage in the places you will actually visit; a compatible band does not guarantee service everywhere.

Is it unlocked, and can it use the SIM or eSIM you want?
An eSIM-capable phone cannot necessarily use any travel eSIM. The phone must be unlocked to use another carrier’s service, and that carrier must support eSIM on the device. Confirm the lock status with the seller or carrier before purchase, and check both the phone maker’s and the travel provider’s compatibility information for the exact model.

Also check the handset’s physical SIM and eSIM configuration. The available arrangement can vary by model and region; do not assume that a listing for one country describes the unit sold elsewhere. Which mobile-data option fits the trip?
Compare your home carrier’s roaming, a local prepaid plan and a prepaid travel eSIM. The best choice depends on the countries covered, amount and duration of data, calling and texting needs, activation method, renewal terms and total price. Plan conditions vary, so check the current terms for your itinerary rather than assuming a travel eSIM will be cheaper or include voice service.

You can keep a home line active while using a travel line, but that does not automatically prevent roaming charges. Ask your home carrier how charges work when the home line remains enabled, and decide which line supplies mobile data. If an eSIM or provider requires installation or activation over Wi-Fi, arrange that before departure or ensure you will have Wi-Fi or a hotspot.

Treat water and dust ratings as limited claims under stated test conditions, not as permission to use a foldable carelessly. Samsung lists IP48 for the Galaxy Z Fold8 and says it was tested for fresh-water immersion up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. Samsung also says resistance can diminish with normal wear and does not advise beach or pool use. Saltwater, grit and real-world handling are not covered by that immersion description.

Dust deserves particular attention because it can affect both the hinge and the folding display. Motorola warns that dust can reduce hinge life or damage the display. Google says flexible screens are softer than traditional phone screens and warns against closing the phone when sand or dirt is on the display or in the hinge. Its safety guidance also notes that resistance may diminish or be lost through wear, damage, repair or disassembly. Read the makers’ guidance for the specific model, including Motorola’s foldable care guidance and Google’s foldable phone safety guidance.
- Keep sand, crumbs and other fine particles away from the screen and hinge; inspect the display before folding it shut.
- Do not treat a water-resistance rating as beach or pool protection.
- Consider whether your itinerary involves dusty outdoor conditions or activities where keeping the phone clean and dry will be difficult.
What else should you budget and check?
Charging accessories
Check the box contents for the exact regional listing instead of assuming a charger is included. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold8 45W power adapter is sold separately. Confirm charger compatibility and bring a suitable destination-plug solution for your trip.

Size, weight and battery needs
Compare folded dimensions and weight across the exact models you are considering, and decide whether the device will fit your travel routine and carry setup. Check the published battery and charging specifications for the particular SKU; those figures alone cannot establish how long the phone will last on your itinerary.

Before purchase, check where the warranty applies and whether authorized repair is available at your destination. Ask how damage to the folding screen or hinge is handled, and keep a non-phone backup of essential travel details and account-recovery information in case the handset is unavailable.
