A product key is not itself proof of a valid license, and successful activation does not guarantee that the software is genuine.
Start by identifying what the offer actually includes
“Office” can refer to different products and rights. Microsoft describes Office Home, Office Home & Business, and Office Home & Student as one-time purchases for installation on one PC or Mac; Microsoft 365 is a subscription. A listing that names only a key does not tell you which license rights come with it. Check the offer against Microsoft’s product-key and Office guidance.

- License type: Is it a one-time purchase, a Microsoft 365 subscription, an employer benefit, or a volume license? Do not assume that a key-only listing answers this.
- Edition and apps: Confirm the precise product name and which applications are included.
- Platform and intended use: Check compatibility with your operating system and whether the license is intended for home or business use.
- Geography: Confirm that the offer and its terms apply in your country or region.
Microsoft’s transfer guidance covers specific Office editions and conditions; it does not establish that every discounted key is transferable or eligible for resale.
Check the seller, delivery, and refund terms
Microsoft warns that Office keys sold separately from the software may be stolen or fraudulently obtained, and that unauthorized keys can be blocked. Its guidance recommends buying from credible sources. Before paying, identify who is responsible for the sale and what, exactly, will be delivered. - Record the seller’s legal identity and save the listing and product description.
- Check whether you are buying a complete license or only receiving a key, and how the entitlement will be provided.
- Read the refund policy, especially what happens if the key fails or is later blocked.
- Keep the invoice, terms, and seller correspondence.
If a key fails or is blocked, Microsoft advises contacting the seller and requesting a refund. A seller’s promise that a key activates is not a substitute for clear license terms.
Make sure the entitlement is tied to an account you control
For many activation and reinstall tasks, Microsoft’s support guidance says the Microsoft account associated with the purchase is used instead of entering the product key again. Ask which account will receive the entitlement and whether it will be an account you control. Do not rely on a vague promise of “account activation” without knowing whose account is involved or how you will access the license later. Verify device limits and transfer conditions
Microsoft describes Office Home one-time purchases as installable on one PC or Mac. Its transfer instructions for Office 2024 and Office 2021 include conditions such as removing the software from the previous computer before transferring it. Those rules apply to the specified products and do not make every cheap key reusable or resellable. Check the terms for the precise edition you are considering in Microsoft’s Office transfer guidance.

Do not treat activation as proof of a genuine license
Microsoft’s retail license terms for Office Professional 2021 state: “Successful activation does not confirm that the software is genuine or properly licensed.” That statement appears in the terms for that specific edition; it should not be presented as a quotation from every Office license agreement. A key can activate and still leave questions about whether the seller was authorized to provide it or whether the buyer received the rights the listing implied. Understand the risks of counterfeit Office
Microsoft warns that counterfeit software can expose users to malware, corrupt files or data loss, omit critical security updates, or result in lost editing functionality. Microsoft’s support and transfer pages describe product categories and certain transfer conditions, but they do not establish current prices or a complete feature comparison. Verify current offer details and terms rather than assuming a discounted key is better value.
