Before you do, make sure another on-screen keyboard is installed and enabled. Gboard beta is separate from Android Beta for Pixel; you do not need to enroll your phone in an Android beta to try a keyboard app.
Before you join: keep another keyboard ready
Beta apps can be less stable than their public versions. Google warns that they may crash or have features that do not work. A second keyboard gives you a way to keep typing if Gboard has a problem or is temporarily unavailable. Google’s Gboard Help puts it plainly: “Important: If Gboard is your only keyboard app, install a secondary one.”

Make sure the alternative keyboard is installed and enabled before changing Gboard. You do not need to buy another device or a physical keyboard; the fallback is another on-screen keyboard app.

- Make sure Gboard is installed on your Android device.
- Open the Google Play Store and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Manage apps & devices, then Installed, and select Gboard.
- If the listing shows Join the beta, follow the prompts to enroll. If it does not, Google says the developer is not currently offering a public beta for that app through Google Play. Availability is not guaranteed for every account or device.
Joining the beta does not guarantee access to a particular experiment. Google’s announcements show that Gboard features can also arrive through ordinary app updates. For example, a September 3, 2025 announcement described AI writing tools for tone adjustments, spelling and grammar fixes, and proofreading, with processing on-device. That dated announcement does not establish that a feature is available to every user now; rollout, eligibility, language, and device support may vary.

How to switch to a keyboard you can use
To choose an enabled keyboard while typing, touch and hold the Globe key, then select the keyboard you want. To enable Gboard if it is missing from the list, open Android Settings → System → Keyboard → On-screen keyboard and turn it on. Menu names and paths can differ by Android version and device manufacturer.
How to leave Gboard beta and return to the public app
- In Google Play, tap your profile picture and open Manage apps & devices → Beta → Gboard.
- Tap Leave.
- To continue with the public version, uninstall the beta app and reinstall the public Gboard app from Google Play.
Google warns that uninstalling an app can remove its progress or customizations. If you want to preserve Gboard settings or other app data, account for that possibility before uninstalling.

If a Gboard update causes trouble
If the problem started immediately after a Gboard update, Google documents uninstalling updates as a recovery option. On Android, go to Settings → Apps → Gboard → More → Uninstall updates. This can return the app to a more stable version, but menu labels may vary by device.
Clearing Gboard’s app data is more disruptive: Google says it resets the app to its default state. It is different from simply switching to your fallback keyboard, so use it only if you are prepared to set up Gboard again.

Gboard app beta is not Android Beta for Pixel
Gboard beta is an app-level program managed through Google Play. Android Beta for Pixel is a separate operating-system program. Do not enroll in Android Beta just to try keyboard features.
Google warns that opting out of Android Beta and installing the stable Android release ordinarily wipes local device data; restoring from a backup can also have issues. Google describes a limited exception: after installing the stable public release that matches the beta, there is a period to opt out without a wipe before applying another beta update. That operating-system process carries substantially broader device risk than changing Gboard’s app version.
