Shader pre-caching prepares some supported graphics work before a game needs it; in-game compilation does that work when gameplay calls for it. Moving work earlier can reduce loading or stuttering in supported games, but it does not guarantee a complete cache or eliminate every hitch. A game may use pre-cached data and still compile shaders or pipelines while you play.
What is the difference?
| Question | Steam shader pre-caching | In-game compilation |
|---|---|---|
| When does the work happen? | Steam downloads or prepares supported shader or graphics-pipeline data ahead of when the game needs it. | The game or graphics stack compiles or finalizes work when gameplay needs a shader or pipeline. |
| What might you notice? | It can reduce early-launch loading and stutter in supported games. | If the work delays rendering, you may notice a pause or hitch at the point of use. |
| What does it depend on? | Steam’s feature, game support, hardware and driver support, and available cache data. | The game’s rendering path, graphics API, driver, and runtime workload. |
| Does it cover everything? | No. Pre-caching does not mean every possible shader or pipeline is already available. | It can still occur even when pre-caching is available. |
Think of pre-caching as preparing some ingredients before service, while in-game compilation is preparing a step when an order arrives. The analogy is only about timing: a shader cache contains technical data, not finished frames or scenes.

What Steam pre-caching does on Steam Deck
Valve’s Steam client update of 13 December 2017 described Steam downloading pre-compiled shaders for a specific video card when hardware and driver support allow it. Valve said this could reduce loading time and in-game stuttering during the first few launches of supported OpenGL and Vulkan games. The wording matters: it is a conditional benefit, not a promise that every game or launch will be hitch-free. Valve’s 2017 update

Steam Deck is the platform context, not proof of universal coverage. Valve describes SteamOS as Linux-based and identifies Steam Deck as a SteamOS device, but its shader notes do not establish that every Deck game receives complete pre-cached data. Valve’s SteamOS overview
Why can compilation still happen during play?
Pre-caching and runtime compilation are not mutually exclusive. A game can use prepared data for some work and still need to compile or finalize work when it encounters something missing, new, or specific to its runtime path. Different games can also use different graphics APIs and rendering approaches, so there is no single compilation path that applies to every Deck title.

When shader or pipeline work must happen at the point of use and delays rendering, the result may be a visible hitch. Pre-caching aims to move some supported work out of that moment; it cannot ensure that all work is known and ready in advance.
Why is Steam downloading shader data?
It may be obtaining shader or Vulkan pipeline data for supported games so that some graphics work can be prepared before play. Valve said shader data may appear in Steam’s download manager, and a 2020 Linux client update described background processing of Vulkan pipelines. That update also documented merging NVIDIA per-thread cache files after pipeline processing and after a game exits. These are historical implementation details from 1 June 2020, not evidence of current Steam Deck defaults. Valve’s 2020 Linux update

Does pre-caching stop stutter?
No. Valve described a possible reduction in loading time and stuttering for supported OpenGL and Vulkan games, depending on hardware and driver support. Its release notes do not provide a modern Steam Deck performance comparison or guarantee that pre-caching prevents stutter. Stuttering can also have causes other than shader compilation, so a hitch by itself does not show that the shader cache is missing or broken.
The cited Valve updates are release notes from 2017, 2019, and 2020 rather than a current Deck user manual. They do not establish a current settings path, cache size, per-game coverage, battery impact, or general-purpose cache-clearing fix.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
