Before buying an older or discontinued TV, confirm the exact model and regional variant, check its manufacturer support page and manual, and test that its features work with your devices. Then inspect the actual set and get the seller’s warranty and return terms in writing. Age or a familiar series name alone cannot tell you whether a particular TV is supported, compatible, or in good condition.
How can I identify the exact TV model?
Ask the seller for a clear photo of the model label and compare it with the on-screen system information if possible. The model number may be on the box, a label on the rear or underside of the TV, or in a menu such as “About,” “Device,” or “System details,” according to ACMA’s device-identification guidance (last updated 20 August 2026). For Roku-branded TVs, the manufacturer also points to the rear label, box, or Settings > System > About (Roku TV product information, last updated 31 August 2026).

Search using the complete model code, including suffixes that identify a regional or hardware variant. Use that identifier to find the matching manual and support page; similar-looking models may differ in features or software. How do I find out if the TV still gets updates?
Open the manufacturer’s official support page for the exact model. Check for the latest firmware, release notes, installation instructions, and any notice that downloads or support are ending. Do not infer a fixed support lifetime from the TV’s age or brand.

Sony says downloads for some older models will end progressively. If a notice gives an end date, Sony recommends installing the latest update before that date. It also says, “Software addressing product security concerns may be released in the future, depending on the necessity”—not a promise of continuing updates. See Sony’s older-model update termination notice (modified 11 March 2025).
Update methods vary by model. Sony notes that some older TVs cannot search for updates manually or may require service assistance; Sony’s update guidance describes model-dependent procedures. LG documents both network and USB update routes and cautions that the method depends on the product (LG software update guidance, dated 7 November 2025). An empty or unavailable firmware listing does not prove the TV cannot work as a display, but it does not establish that future support is available.

Will an older TV work with my console, soundbar, or other devices?
List the equipment you plan to connect—such as a game console, receiver, soundbar, antenna, computer, or external player—then check the exact TV’s manual for its ports and supported features. Verify resolution, HDR formats, refresh rate, HDMI input count, and audio-return connection where relevant. The word “HDMI” or a version label alone does not confirm a particular capability.

Will the built-in apps still meet my needs?
Treat the TV’s smart software separately from its screen and physical inputs. A set may still serve as a display even if its built-in apps or updates are limited, but app availability and service lifetimes have not been established for particular models here. Check that the apps you need currently work on the exact TV. If they do not, consider whether an external streaming device would meet your needs; that is a separate compatibility check, not a guarantee that a specific device will work.
What should I inspect on the actual TV and listing?
Test the set
For a used TV, ask for a powered-on demonstration. Examine the panel for lines, dark areas, stuck pixels, uneven brightness, image retention, or physical damage. Test every input you need, along with the remote, speakers, Wi-Fi if relevant, and the stand or mounting points. These checks assess the individual unit; a model’s specifications cannot establish its present condition.

Get the sale terms in writing
Ask whether the TV is new old stock, open-box, refurbished, or used, and request the seller’s condition description, warranty coverage, return window, and included accessories in writing. Those labels do not by themselves establish the set’s condition. Warranty and return terms depend on the seller and location, so verify the terms for the specific listing rather than assuming a universal rule.

How should I compare two older TVs?
Compare the units against your needs and the evidence available for each exact model and listing. The practical questions are:
- Support: Is current firmware listed? Is there an end-of-download notice? Is the manual available, and do the apps you need work?
- Compatibility: Does the manual confirm the required inputs, resolution, refresh rate, HDR formats, and audio connection for your equipment?
- Condition and protection: Does the particular unit pass your checks? What are the seller’s documented warranty and return terms?
- Value: Compare the asking price with a current alternative, delivery costs, missing accessories, and any external device you would need. These factors depend on the listing; no price ranking follows from the model name or age alone.
There is no single age cutoff that determines whether a discontinued TV is a good buy. Make the decision from the exact model’s documentation, the features you need, the individual set’s condition, and the seller’s written terms.
