Use Microsoft’s Exchange Server HealthChecker as the primary post-update check: confirm the expected Build Number and the Exchange IU or Security Hotfix Detected entry. Then cross-check the local ExSetup.exe version against Microsoft’s build table for the server’s exact Exchange release and cumulative update (CU). The AdminDisplayVersion field from Get-ExchangeServer shows the CU, but not whether a security update (SU) or hotfix update (HU) is installed.
Verify the update against the right Exchange build
There is no single expected build number for every Exchange server. First identify the server’s Exchange generation and installed CU, then use Microsoft’s Exchange Server build numbers and release dates page to find the matching SU or HU entry. The page lists CUs, SUs, HUs, and release dates; compare against the entry for the server’s own release and CU.
Check support eligibility as well as the version. Microsoft states that Exchange Server 2016 and 2019 are out of support; customers enrolled in the Extended Security Update (ESU) program are eligible for December 2025 and later security updates. Organizations outside ESU are directed to migrate to Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE) to continue receiving the latest security updates. Confirm the server’s entitlement and applicable release entry on Microsoft’s current build page before judging whether it is up to date.
Run HealthChecker and inspect its update fields
Microsoft recommends using the Exchange Server HealthChecker script to verify the build after an update. In the report’s Exchange Information section, check both Build Number and Exchange IU or Security Hotfix Detected. Confirm that they identify the intended release and update. Microsoft also advises running HealthChecker again after an SU to see whether additional post-install actions are required. See Microsoft’s Exchange Server update FAQ.

Cross-check the installed Exchange binary
Use Exchange Management Shell to retrieve the local setup executable’s version:
Get-Command Exsetup.exe | ForEach-Object {$_.FileVersionInfo}
Compare the reported ProductVersion or FileVersion with the matching release entry in Microsoft’s build table. This local version check complements HealthChecker; make sure the comparison is for the correct Exchange release and CU.

Know what Get-ExchangeServer can—and cannot—confirm
Get-ExchangeServer is useful for identifying Exchange servers and checking their AdminDisplayVersion. However, Microsoft explicitly warns that this field does not show installed SUs or HUs. Use it for server and CU inventory, not as proof that a security update was applied.
Check setup logs when the result is unclear
If installation may have failed, review the Windows Event Viewer Application log for Exchange setup events and inspect <system drive>:ExchangeSetupLogsExchangeSetup.log. The setup log records prerequisite and readiness checks, installation progress, and system configuration changes. Search for errors and read their associated details; a version number alone does not explain why setup failed.

Microsoft’s Exchange Server installation verification guidance describes checking setup events and logs. If an update failed, use the exact error text and product/version context with Microsoft’s Fix Failed Exchange Server Updates guidance, which states that it applies to Exchange Server SE.
Verify every affected server and installation type
Check each Exchange server individually; a successful result on one server does not verify the rest of the environment. Microsoft’s update FAQ also recommends installing security updates on servers and workstations that run only Exchange Management Tools, and restarting before and after updates even when setup does not prompt for a restart.

Microsoft 365 admin center’s Software updates (Preview) page can provide high-level counts of Exchange CU/SU status and out-of-support installations across an organization. Microsoft says it does not identify the specific servers that are one or more builds behind, and labels the feature a preview subject to change. Treat it as fleet-level context, not a substitute for checking each server; see View software update status for Exchange Server installations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What counts as a successful verification
- HealthChecker reports the expected build and detects the intended Exchange IU or security hotfix.
- The local
ExSetup.exeversion matches the build-table entry for that Exchange release and CU. - Relevant setup and Application logs contain no unresolved installation errors.
- HealthChecker has been rerun to identify any required follow-up actions.
An installer’s success message alone does not establish that all post-update actions are complete, and a CU-only version field does not establish SU/HU status.
