Nintendo’s Zelda timeline is a published fictional chronology, not a list of games in release order. Its shared history runs from Skyward Sword through The Minish Cap and Four Swords to Ocarina of Time. At the end of Ocarina of Time, time travel produces the child and adult eras, while Nintendo’s Hyrule Historia also records a defeated-hero outcome known as the downfall timeline. The three classic branches have different versions of Hyrule, different fates for Ganondorf, and different follow-up games. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are set in a far-future Hyrule, but Nintendo has not provided a definitive placement within those older branches.
What the official Zelda timeline actually is
The timeline is Nintendo’s attempt to arrange the fictional history of Hyrule and its recurring heroes, princesses and villains. It was published in The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia, released in Japan on 21 December 2011 for the series’ 25th anniversary. The book’s second section, “The History of Hyrule: A Chronology,” presents the sequence and the three outcomes associated with Ocarina of Time.

It is an official framework, but Nintendo deliberately leaves room for revision. The chronology includes the qualification that “this chronicle merely collects information that is believed to be true at this time.” That wording matters: the timeline is authoritative for the material Nintendo had organized when Hyrule Historia was published, yet it is not a promise that every future game will fit neatly without reinterpretation.
The chronology also describes eras and historical outcomes rather than prescribing one correct way to play. Release order, story chronology and the three post-Ocarina branches are different concepts.

The shared history before the split
All three classic outcomes share the same opening sequence. These games establish the mythology, locations and conflicts that make the later branches possible.
- Skyward Sword: the earliest setting in the published chronology. It explains the origins of the recurring struggle involving Link, Zelda, the Master Sword and the force that becomes associated with Ganon and Ganondorf.
- The Minish Cap: an earlier Hyrule adventure involving the Minish and the sorcerer Vaati. It adds historical context before the kingdom reaches the crisis seen in Ocarina of Time.
- Four Swords: the next listed era, centered on Vaati and the Four Sword. Its events lead into the Hyrule that exists immediately before the pivotal time-travel story.
- Ocarina of Time: the hinge of the chronology. Link draws the Master Sword, moves between childhood and adulthood, confronts Ganondorf and ultimately defeats him before being returned to his younger body.
The first three games are therefore the common trunk. The branches are not separate universes from the beginning; they are different historical consequences of the events in Ocarina of Time.
Why Ocarina of Time creates three eras
Ocarina of Time combines victory, time travel and an alternate outcome. When adult Link defeats Ganondorf, Zelda sends him back to his childhood. That act changes two versions of Hyrule at once.

The child and adult consequences of Link’s victory
In the child-era world, Link returns with knowledge of Ganondorf’s plan. He can warn Princess Zelda and the royal family before Ganondorf carries it out. The young Link who remains in that era is no longer waiting for events to unfold as they did in the original adventure.
The adult-era world continues after Link has been removed from it. The Hero of Time is no longer present, even though the people of that future remember his deeds. Ganondorf eventually escapes his imprisonment and threatens Hyrule again. The gods respond by flooding the kingdom, creating the sea-covered setting that begins The Wind Waker.
The defeated-hero possibility
Hyrule Historia also records a third possibility: Link is defeated by Ganondorf during the Ocarina of Time conflict. Ganondorf claims the Triforce, and the Sacred Realm becomes the Dark World. A later hero defeats him, but the political and geographic history that follows is different from both triumphant eras. This is commonly called the downfall timeline or defeated-hero timeline.
The child and adult eras therefore both begin with Link’s victory, viewed from different points in time. The downfall branch is the separate outcome in which the hero loses.

Child timeline: the Hero is Triumphant in the child era
The child timeline starts when Link is returned to his younger body and alerts the royal family to Ganondorf’s intentions. Its representative sequence is:
Majora’s Mask → Twilight Princess → Four Swords Adventures
Majora’s Mask
After the events of Ocarina of Time, Link travels through the Lost Woods while searching for a missing companion and reaches the parallel world of Termina. The story is not a continuation of the same Hyrule geography; it is a separate world reached from the child era. Link faces a three-day catastrophe involving the falling moon, repeating time to save Termina’s regions.
Twilight Princess
Much later in this branch, Ganondorf is condemned and banished to the Twilight Realm. His return brings the worlds of light and twilight into conflict. Link’s transformation into a wolf, Midna’s role and the recovery of the Master Sword are all consequences of this branch’s history, in which the royal family knew about Ganondorf before his original rise to power.

The branch continues with another crisis involving Vaati, the Four Sword and a version of Ganon. It is the latest representative game in the child-era sequence listed by Hyrule Historia. The recurring names and artifacts do not mean every Link or Zelda is the same individual; the timeline contains successive generations.
Adult timeline: the Hero is Triumphant in the adult era
The adult timeline is the future left behind when Zelda sends Link to childhood. Its representative order is:
The Wind Waker → Phantom Hourglass → Spirit Tracks

The Wind Waker
Without the Hero of Time in the adult future, Ganondorf eventually returns. The gods flood Hyrule to prevent him from ruling the entire land, leaving mountaintops as islands beneath a vast ocean. Link, known as the new hero of the Great Sea, and Tetra, a descendant of Zelda, become central to the effort to stop Ganondorf.

The old land survives beneath the sea, while island communities develop their own histories and travel by sail.
Phantom Hourglass
Phantom Hourglass follows Link and Tetra after their voyage. It is a direct continuation of the adult-era adventure, with a new sea, new islands and a different supernatural threat. The game extends the maritime world rather than returning immediately to the drowned Hyrule beneath the waves.
Spirit Tracks
In the next generation, settlers establish a new land. Railways connect the kingdom, and a new Link and Zelda confront a threat tied to the realm’s spiritual foundations. The setting is therefore not simply old Hyrule restored; it is a later society founded after the adult branch’s oceanic upheaval.
Downfall timeline: the Hero is Defeated
The downfall branch begins with the outcome in which Link loses to Ganondorf at Ocarina of Time. Ganondorf obtains the Triforce, and the Sacred Realm becomes the Dark World. A later hero eventually defeats him, but the branch’s subsequent games portray a long, separate history.
Its representative sequence is:
A Link to the Past → Oracle of Ages / Oracle of Seasons → Link’s Awakening → A Link Between Worlds → Tri Force Heroes → The Legend of Zelda → The Adventure of Link
A Link to the Past
This game establishes the Dark World as the corrupted Sacred Realm and follows a later Link’s effort to rescue Zelda, recover the Master Sword and defeat Ganon. The Light World and Dark World structure is a major consequence of the defeated-hero history.

The Oracle games and Link’s Awakening
Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons can be played separately or linked through passwords to carry progress between them. They are followed by Link’s Awakening, in which Link is shipwrecked on Koholint Island and must confront the island’s dreamlike reality. These adventures continue the downfall branch without returning to the exact Hyrule of A Link to the Past.
A Link Between Worlds and Tri Force Heroes
A Link Between Worlds revisits a version of Hyrule connected to the parallel kingdom of Lorule. Its wall-merging mechanic and alternate-world plot echo the Light World/Dark World idea while telling a new story. Tri Force Heroes follows with a fashion-focused kingdom and cooperative challenges, showing how much the branch can vary in tone while retaining its historical place.

The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link
The original The Legend of Zelda and its direct sequel, The Adventure of Link, sit at the end of this representative sequence. Hyrule is fragmented, Ganon’s legacy remains dangerous and Zelda’s rescue is tied to an older royal history. Their placement explains why these earliest-released games are not the beginning of Nintendo’s chronological history.
How the three classic branches differ
| Branch | Cause | Link’s status | Hyrule’s condition | Ganondorf’s outcome | Representative games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Child era | Link wins and is returned to childhood with knowledge of Ganondorf’s plan. | Returned to his younger body; able to warn the royal family. | A pre-conquest Hyrule develops into the setting of the Twilight Realm conflict. | Exposed, banished to the Twilight Realm and later defeated. | Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, Four Swords Adventures |
| Adult era | Link wins but is removed from the future he saved. | Absent from the adult future; remembered as the Hero of Time. | Flooded by the gods; later societies settle a new land. | Returns after Link’s departure, is defeated, and remains tied to the drowned-Hyrule history. | The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks |
| Downfall branch | Link is defeated during the Ocarina of Time conflict. | Defeated; a later hero inherits the struggle. | The Sacred Realm becomes the Dark World, followed by repeated political and geographic changes. | Claims the Triforce before a later hero defeats him. | A Link to the Past, the Oracle games, Link’s Awakening, A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes, The Legend of Zelda, The Adventure of Link |

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are set in a far-future Hyrule, long after the older games’ named events. Their stories refer to ancient cycles, forgotten kingdoms and technological eras, but the cited official material does not assign them an exact position among the child, adult and downfall branches.
In September 2024, Nintendo Life reported that Nintendo had shared a newer presentation separating the two games from the earlier group. That report still identified no official exact answer for where Tears of the Kingdom sits. As a result, claims that the three classic branches definitely merge, or that these games create a confirmed fourth branch, are interpretations rather than settled Nintendo chronology.
The safest description is that both games are far-future Hyrule stories whose precise relationship to the three classic branches remains unresolved. Their setting can be discussed without treating a fan theory as an official fact.

How to use the timeline without getting confused
Chronological play order
For the published history, begin with Skyward Sword, continue through The Minish Cap and Four Swords, then play Ocarina of Time. After that, choose the child, adult or downfall sequence. This approach follows the fictional chronology but requires accepting that some mechanics, visual styles and storytelling conventions come from much later release periods.
Release order
Release order shows how Nintendo’s design changed: the original two-dimensional games came first, followed by experiments with time, 3D exploration, ocean travel, alternate worlds and open-world geography. It does not match the fictional chronology, but it can make references and mechanical evolution easier to recognize.
Branch-focused play
If you want one coherent arc, play Ocarina of Time and then select a branch. Choose the child era for Termina and the Twilight Realm, the adult era for the flooded Great Sea, or the downfall branch for the Dark World and the older top-down adventures. You do not need to complete every title to understand why the branches exist.
The reference book behind the chronology
The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia remains the central physical reference for the published timeline. Alongside “The History of Hyrule: A Chronology,” it includes Zelda artwork and historical material about the games. Its chronology should be read as Nintendo’s documented framework at the time of publication, together with Nintendo’s qualification that the record contains what is believed to be true at that time.
That qualification is why a careful explanation distinguishes established placement from later interpretation. The classic three-branch structure is the clearest part of the published chronology; the exact location of the two newest games is not.
The Bottom Line
The classic Zelda timeline shares a trunk through Ocarina of Time, then divides into child, adult and defeated-hero outcomes. The first two follow Link’s victory from different points in time; the third records his defeat. Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom belong to a far-future Hyrule, but their exact branch placement has not been officially settled.
