The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) is a market-priced estimate of how much the S&P 500 could move over the next 30 days. It is calculated from prices of S&P 500 Index (SPX) options, expressed as an annualized standard deviation, and has no built-in view about whether prices will rise or fall. A VIX of 16, for example, corresponds to an approximate one-standard-deviation range of ±16% over a year, about ±4.6% over a month, or roughly ±1% over one trading day when square-root-of-time scaling is used. Those ranges are estimates, not guaranteed limits or crash predictions.
What the VIX actually measures
The VIX measures the level of expected volatility for the S&P 500 over a constant 30-day horizon. “Expected” here does not mean that Cboe is conducting a survey or that analysts are issuing a directional forecast. The expectation is implied by the prices investors are currently willing to pay and accept for SPX puts and calls.

Volatility describes the size of possible price changes, not their sign. A higher reading means options are pricing a wider distribution of potential S&P 500 outcomes during the target period. It does not mean the index must fall, and a lower reading does not guarantee that prices will rise or remain stable.
- Underlying: the S&P 500 Index, represented by SPX options.
- Horizon: a constant 30 days.
- Unit: annualized percentage points, interpreted as a standard deviation.
- Direction: none; the index measures expected magnitude rather than bullish or bearish direction.
- Source of information: live option bid/ask quotations across many strikes and nearby expirations.
This makes the VIX a forward-looking, market-based volatility measure. It is different from a statistic calculated only from historical S&P 500 returns, even though both are commonly called measures of volatility.

How to read a VIX number
Because the VIX is annualized, the number is easiest to understand as an approximate one-standard-deviation move over a year. A reading of 20 means the options market is pricing an annualized standard deviation of about 20% for the S&P 500. A rough interpretation is an annual range of plus or minus 20% around the current index level, assuming a simplified normal-distribution framework. It is not a maximum, a floor, or a promise that the index will stay inside that band.
Cboe’s commonly cited example is VIX 16: approximately ±16% for a year and about ±1% for one trading day. To translate the annualized figure to shorter horizons, divide by the square root of the number of comparable periods:
- One month: VIX ÷ √12.
- One trading day: VIX ÷ √252, using approximately 252 trading days in a year.
| VIX reading | Approximate annual one-standard-deviation range | Approximate monthly range (divide by √12) | Approximate daily range (divide by √252) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | ±12% | ±3.5% | ±0.8% |
| 16 | ±16% | ±4.6% | ±1.0% |
| 20 | ±20% | ±5.8% | ±1.3% |
| 30 | ±30% | ±8.7% | ±1.9% |
The table applies a mathematical scaling rule to illustrate the units; it is not a set of guaranteed forecasts. Actual returns do not arrive in equal daily increments, volatility can cluster, and large moves can occur outside a one-standard-deviation interval.

SPX options include puts and calls with different strikes. Their prices reflect the cost of transferring both upside and downside risks. The VIX combines those prices into a measure of expected dispersion. The resulting number loses the directional information that might be associated with any single option or with a trader’s position.
A rising VIX often appears at the same time as market stress because demand for downside protection can make options more expensive. That co-movement is an observation about how markets frequently behave, not a rule encoded in the index. A high VIX can occur while the S&P 500 is falling, rising sharply after a sell-off, or moving unpredictably. Treating a high reading as an automatic sell signal confuses volatility with direction.
Likewise, a low VIX says that option prices imply a narrower range of outcomes for the next 30 days. It does not certify that a calm market is safe, nor does it rule out an abrupt move. The index should be read as a statement about the width of the option-implied distribution, not as a forecast of the next closing level.

How Cboe calculates the VIX
The standard VIX calculation aggregates weighted prices of SPX puts and calls across a wide range of strike prices. It then uses nearby option expirations to create a constant 30-day maturity rather than relying on one listed expiration that might be slightly shorter or longer than a month.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute1. Select eligible expirations
Cboe’s methodology uses SPX options with more than 23 days and fewer than 37 days to Friday expiration. Using two nearby maturities allows the calculation to interpolate a value at exactly 30 days.
2. Use bid and ask quotations across strikes
For each eligible expiration, the formula takes option quotes over many strikes. Both puts and calls contribute. The weighting scheme is designed to capture the market’s priced variance over the full range rather than the premium of one particular contract.
3. Aggregate the option prices
Weighted option prices are combined for each maturity. The resulting variance estimates are interpolated between the nearby expirations to produce the constant 30-day value.
4. Convert variance to volatility
The calculation produces a variance-like quantity. Cboe takes the square root and annualizes it, reporting the result as the VIX percentage-point level. This is why a reading such as 16 is conventionally discussed as a 16% annualized standard deviation.
5. Update indicative values during the session
Intraday spot values use snapshots of SPX bid/ask quotes every 15 seconds during the stated global and regular trading sessions. The index is therefore a stream of calculations from option-market quotes, not a once-a-day survey or a number derived only from the previous day’s stock returns.

Implied volatility versus realized volatility
Implied volatility is inferred from current option prices. The VIX tells you the volatility that those prices are pricing for the next 30 days, expressed in annualized terms.
Realized volatility (also called historical volatility) is calculated from returns that have already occurred. It answers a backward-looking question: how much did the S&P 500 actually move during a selected historical window?
| Characteristic | VIX (implied volatility) | Realized or historical volatility |
|---|---|---|
| Time orientation | Forward-looking, based on current option prices | Backward-looking, based on observed index returns |
| Underlying data | SPX put and call bid/ask quotations across strikes | Historical S&P 500 price or return observations |
| Horizon | Constant 30 days for the standard VIX | Whatever look-back window the analyst chooses |
| Market effects | Includes option supply, demand, hedging needs, risk premiums and forecast error | Reflects movements that have already happened |
| Guarantee | Not a promise of the volatility that will be realized | Not a forecast by itself; it describes the past window |
These measures can diverge for legitimate reasons. Option buyers may pay a premium for protection, hedging demand can change quoted prices, and market participants can simply be wrong about the next month. Comparing the VIX with a historical measure is useful only when the horizons, annualization conventions and calculation methods are aligned.
What a VIX of 20, 16 or 30 means in practice
VIX 16: a moderate priced range, not a target
At 16, the annualized one-standard-deviation interpretation is approximately ±16%. Square-root-of-time scaling gives about ±4.6% for a month and ±1.0% for one trading day. The figures describe the scale of movement embedded in options, not the exact path the S&P 500 will take.
VIX 20: wider uncertainty
At 20, the same approximation becomes ±20% annually, ±5.8% monthly and ±1.3% daily. Compared with a VIX of 16, options are pricing a wider range of possible outcomes. The number still does not identify which side of the current index level will be favored.
VIX 30: very broad priced outcomes
At 30, the annualized standard deviation is approximately 30%, with a rough monthly translation of 8.7% and daily translation of 1.9%. A reading this high signals substantially more expensive or more widely dispersed option-implied risk than a reading of 16, but it remains a magnitude measure rather than a crash timetable.

To convert any reading into index points, multiply the decimal form of the selected range by the current S&P 500 level. For example, if the index is 5,000 and the annualized reading is 20%, 20% of 5,000 is 1,000 points. That arithmetic illustrates scale only; the one-standard-deviation range is not a promised upper or lower boundary.

Is the VIX a prediction of a stock-market crash?
No. The VIX is a 30-day option-implied volatility measure, not a probability of a crash and not a forecast of a particular percentage decline. A crash is a directional event with a specific magnitude and time path. The VIX does not encode those details.
A sudden increase can indicate that options are pricing greater uncertainty or a wider range of outcomes. Downside protection may be contributing to that repricing, but the index itself cannot distinguish a disorderly fall from a large rally, a rapid two-way market or uncertainty around a scheduled event. To assess a crash risk, an analyst would need additional information, such as the market’s direction, option skew, credit conditions and the relevant event calendar; none of those is represented by the VIX level alone.

Cboe’s VIX1D is designed to measure one-day expected volatility using very short-dated SPX options and time weighting. The standard VIX targets 30 days. Their numbers are not interchangeable simply because both are quoted as volatility percentages.
| Comparison axis | Standard VIX | VIX1D |
|---|---|---|
| Target horizon | Constant 30 days | One day |
| Option maturities | Nearby SPX expirations with more than 23 and fewer than 37 days to Friday expiration | Very short-dated SPX options, with time weighting |
| Underlying | S&P 500 via SPX options | S&P 500 via SPX options |
| Annualization | Annualized standard-deviation percentage | Annualized convention applied to a one-day expectation |
| Typical responsiveness | Spreads information across roughly a month | Can react sharply to intraday order flow or a scheduled event affecting the next day |
| Interpretation | Monthly option-implied volatility | Next-day option-implied volatility |
A one-day index can jump because tomorrow contains a known announcement, while the 30-day index averages that concern with the rest of the month. Before comparing two volatility readings, check the target horizon, options included, annualization convention and whether the measure is implied or realized.

A practical framework for interpreting a volatility reading
- Identify the horizon. Confirm whether the number refers to 30 days, one day or another period. Do not apply a daily interpretation to a 30-day index.
- Read the unit correctly. Treat the quoted value as an annualized standard deviation. Convert it with √12 or √252 only for a rough monthly or trading-day estimate.
- Separate magnitude from direction. Ask how wide the priced range is, then use separate evidence to form a directional view.
- Check the underlying. The standard VIX and VIX1D both use SPX options, but a volatility index on a different asset would answer a different question.
- Compare like with like. Align maturity, annualization and implied-versus-realized status before drawing conclusions from two numbers.
- Allow for pricing effects. Remember that hedging demand, option supply and risk premiums can move implied volatility even when realized movement later differs.
- Use a range, not a point forecast. Translate the reading into an approximate one-standard-deviation range and treat it as a scenario measure rather than a promised endpoint.
Common interpretation mistakes
“High VIX means stocks will go down.”
Incorrect. High VIX means options price greater expected movement. The move can be upward, downward or two-sided.
Best Value
“The VIX gives the exact percentage the S&P 500 will move.”
Incorrect. It gives an annualized standard deviation. Conversions to monthly or daily ranges are approximations, and realized returns can be larger or smaller.
“A low VIX means there is no risk.”
Incorrect. A low reading means a narrower option-implied range for the target horizon. It does not eliminate the possibility of an unexpected move.
“VIX equals realized volatility.”
Incorrect. VIX is inferred from option prices; realized volatility is calculated from past returns. Risk premiums, hedging demand and forecast error can keep them apart.

Not without adjusting for horizon. A one-day measure is more sensitive to the next session’s events, whereas the standard VIX spreads information over 30 days.
“The index is based on investor opinions.”
Not directly. The calculation uses quoted SPX option prices. Those prices reflect trading decisions and market conditions, not answers to a questionnaire.
How to use the VIX without overclaiming what it knows
The VIX is most useful as a common language for the price of near-term uncertainty. It can help an investor estimate the scale of movement that options are pricing, compare the market’s current implied range with another period, or distinguish a one-day event risk from a broader monthly repricing. It is less useful as a stand-alone timing signal.
For a risk review, write down the reading, its observation time, the target horizon and the conversion method used. State explicitly whether the resulting range is annual, monthly or daily and that it represents one standard deviation. If you compare it with realized volatility, use the same horizon and annualization basis. If you compare it with VIX1D, explain that the two indices answer different horizon questions.

Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- The VIX is a constant-maturity, 30-day measure of S&P 500 volatility implied by SPX option prices.
- Cboe expresses it as an annualized standard deviation, so a reading of 16 is roughly ±16% annually, ±4.6% monthly or ±1% per trading day under square-root-of-time scaling.
- It is non-directional: a high reading does not, by itself, forecast a market decline or a crash.
- The calculation combines weighted put and call prices across strikes and interpolates nearby expirations with more than 23 and fewer than 37 days to Friday expiration.
- Intraday indicative values use 15-second SPX quote snapshots during the stated global and regular trading sessions.
- Implied volatility can differ from realized volatility because option prices include risk premiums, supply and demand, hedging needs and forecast error.
- VIX1D measures one-day implied volatility, so its readings should not be treated as interchangeable with the standard 30-day VIX.
