What does the S&P 500 measure?

That distinction matters: an index can represent a large share of public stock-market value without representing every public company or every kind of economic activity. How much influence does each company have?
The S&P 500 is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, not by giving every constituent an equal share of the index. In practical terms, a company’s influence reflects its market value based on shares available to public investors, relative to the combined value of the index’s constituents. Larger investable market values generally mean greater influence on index movements.

Float adjustment excludes large blocks of shares that are not generally available for public trading. Examples include holdings by founders, executives, controlling interests, company foundations, and government agencies. What does an S&P 500 level represent?
The index level is not the sum or average of the constituent companies’ share prices. S&P describes the index as a float-adjusted market-cap-weighted index. The divisor is adjusted when constituent changes or certain corporate actions would otherwise create an artificial jump or drop in the index level. That adjustment helps preserve continuity in the series: a company joining or leaving the index should not, by itself, look like a market gain or loss. Why can company and constituent counts differ?
S&P’s index description refers to 500 constituent companies. Its index characteristics snapshot, dated August 31, 2026, reports 503 constituents. These are different fields, not interchangeable statements about the same count; use the date and wording when citing the snapshot. S&P 500 index page

What does the index leave out?
- Stocks outside the large-cap selection. The index covers approximately 80% of available market capitalization, not all of it; companies and market value outside the index are not represented by its constituents.
- Equal company influence. A smaller constituent may be included but still have much less impact on the index than a company with a larger float-adjusted market value.
- Private businesses and broader economic measures. The index reflects the market performance of its listed constituent securities. It does not directly measure private-company output, employment, wages, household finances, or GDP.
- All shares as freely tradable. Float adjustment removes large blocks that are not generally available to public investors.
- A permanent roster. Constituents can change, and the divisor is adjusted to maintain continuity through changes and certain corporate actions.
Price return and total return are different
A price-return series reflects changes in constituent share prices. A total-return series also accounts for dividends reinvested.
