If you live outside Japan, you can investigate buying Nintendo’s Tokyo-listed ordinary shares (ticker 7974) through a broker with access to the Tokyo Stock Exchange, or an OTC-traded depositary receipt (NTDOY) through a broker that offers it. Neither route is available through every broker, and the right choice depends on your country, account, costs and tax situation. Nintendo describes its investor-relations materials as informational, not a solicitation to invest; this guide explains access mechanics, not whether you should buy.
What are the ways to buy Nintendo shares from abroad?
Nintendo Co., Ltd. is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market under stock code 7974. Its English-language FAQ identifies the ticker and says the ordinary shares trade in units of 100 shares in principle. A second possible route is NTDOY, an over-the-counter (OTC) depositary receipt representing Nintendo ordinary shares. Citi’s September 7, 2022 corporate-action notice calls it an unsponsored ADR and records a ratio of one ordinary share to four depositary receipts. How to check whether your broker supports a route
- Check your account and residence. Ask your broker whether your specific account can trade Nintendo 7974 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, NTDOY over the counter, or both. Availability can depend on your country and account permissions.
- Confirm the order size. Nintendo says its ordinary shares trade in 100-share units in principle. Ask whether your broker supports that unit and whether any different order size or fractional trading is actually available for the security you plan to buy.
- Get the complete cost and handling details. Ask about commissions, exchange charges, currency-conversion spreads, bid-ask spreads, any depositary fees, settlement, dividend processing and corporate actions. Also confirm order types and market hours for the specific route.
- Check tax treatment for your circumstances. Source-country withholding and home-country reporting depend on your tax residence and account. Consult current official guidance from the relevant tax authorities or a qualified tax professional.
- Review company disclosures directly. Nintendo’s investor-relations site publishes financial reports and investor information. Check it for current announcements and dates before making a decision.

What ADRs and foreign-market orders mean
A depositary receipt represents shares in a non-U.S. company and may trade in the United States. The SEC’s general investor guidance says U.S. investors can purchase U.S.-traded ADRs through a U.S. broker; it also explains that a broker may process a trade in a security on a foreign exchange. For NTDOY specifically, do not assume that the instrument is sponsored by Nintendo: Citi’s cited notice identifies it as unsponsored. Check the current receipt terms, fees, dividend and corporate-action handling with your broker or the depositary before trading.

If both are available to you, compare the full costs and practical details for your account rather than choosing on the basis of the ticker or trading currency alone. A local quote or simpler order screen does not, by itself, establish lower total costs or better access to the underlying shares.
