The video shows a real hydrogen–air flame moving through a millimetre-scale gap between transparent plates. Under very lean conditions, the flame front does not remain a smooth sheet. It breaks into separate burning cells, and those cells repeatedly split and redirect the reaction zone into a branching, fractal-like path. The American Physical Society’s 2020 presentation plays the event at roughly one-quarter of its real speed, so the motion appears about four times slower than it actually is.
The pattern is produced by a difficult balance: hydrogen spreads rapidly through the unburned mixture, while the narrow walls remove heat intensely. Those effects can keep isolated cells alive even after the original continuous flame has fragmented. The same mechanism that makes the footage scientifically striking also creates a safety concern: a leak entering a narrow crevice near hydrogen equipment could support a dim, low-temperature flame that is difficult to notice.

What the slow-motion video is actually showing
A confined hydrogen flame, not a computer animation
The experiment used two transparent plates separated by a gap measured in millimetres. A hydrogen–air mixture occupied the narrow space, and a flame front travelled through it. The optical technique, commonly called Schlieren imaging, reveals changes in gas density caused by heat and combustion. In the footage, the reacting region appears as a moving front that first looks coherent and then divides into many small luminous or density-change structures.

Because the plates constrain the gas in a quasi-two-dimensional layer, the front cannot expand freely in three dimensions. The geometry makes the effects of wall cooling and molecular transport unusually visible. The branching pattern is therefore a product of the confined experiment, not the shape that every hydrogen flame adopts in open air.

Why the action looks unusually slow
The American Physical Society says the displayed sequence is slowed by about 4×. A cell that appears to creep across the screen is moving approximately four times faster in the physical experiment. Slow playback separates events that occur too quickly for ordinary video: a smooth segment narrows, a hot spot divides, and the resulting cells continue along different paths.
The apparent “fractal” is a visual description of repeated branching at several scales. It is not a claim that the flame is a mathematically perfect fractal. The Physical Review Letters abstract compares the route to the pathway made by starving fungi or bacteria because the active cells split and search through the available mixture.
Why hydrogen flames break into cells and branches
Rapid hydrogen diffusion feeds separated reaction zones
Hydrogen has a high mass diffusivity. Individual hydrogen molecules move through the surrounding gas quickly compared with many other fuel molecules. When a formerly continuous front develops a cooler or weaker section, hydrogen can still migrate toward nearby hotter regions. That transport supplies fuel to separated reaction cells instead of allowing the entire flame to fail at once.

In the video, each cell is therefore more than a detached ember. It is a small reaction zone that receives fresh mixture from ahead of the front. As local conditions change, one cell can divide into two or more active regions. Repeated splitting gives the front its branching appearance.
Millimetre-scale walls remove heat
The plates are close enough that heat rapidly reaches the walls. This intense heat loss cools the gas near both surfaces and makes it harder for a continuous flame sheet to remain hot across the entire gap. Cold, unburned pockets can open between active cells.

Ordinarily, that cooling would be expected to quench a very lean hydrogen flame. In this geometry, however, cooling also helps create the cellular structure. The front becomes intermittent: hot islands persist where transport and reaction are favorable, while neighboring parts fall below the temperature needed for sustained burning.
The two effects reinforce each other
The peer-reviewed study identifies the combination of rapid hydrogen mass diffusion and intense heat losses as the main mechanism. Heat loss breaks the front into weak and strong sections; diffusion lets hydrogen reach the sections that remain capable of burning. The result is a moving population of cells rather than one uninterrupted sheet.

A small change in mixture concentration or plate spacing can move the system from a continuous front to steady cellular motion or to a branching, fractal-like regime.
What the experiments found at different gaps and concentrations
Plate-gap comparison
| Plate separation | Observed front | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | Continuous flame front | The reaction remained connected across the gap in the reported comparison. |
| 2 mm | Small cells separated by cold, unburned gas | Stronger confinement and wall cooling promoted cellular breakup. |
The 1 mm reduction in spacing is important because it changes the proportion of the flame exposed to cooling surfaces. It does not mean that every 2 mm experiment must look identical or that every 3 mm gap produces a smooth flame; the values describe the specific comparison reported by the investigators.
Hydrogen-concentration comparison
| Hydrogen concentration in the confined gas | Reported behavior | Motion of the flame cells |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | Hydrogen was able to burn in the confined mixture | The American Physical Society highlighted this as evidence that combustion can persist at an exceptionally lean concentration in the geometry. |
| 10.25% | Cellular propagation | Cells travelled steadily in approximately straight lines. |
| 10.5% | Fractal-like propagation | Cells branched and split as the front advanced. |
The 10.25% and 10.5% cases are especially revealing. A difference of only 0.25 percentage points was associated with a change from straight, steady cell motion to a branching pattern in the reported observations. That should not be read as a universal ignition threshold: the exact transition depends on gap width, wall temperature, pressure, mixture preparation and other experimental details. It does show how nonlinear the competition between reaction, diffusion and cooling can be.

Can hydrogen burn in a tiny gap?
Yes. The experiment demonstrates combustion in a millimetre-scale space, including a reported case at 5% hydrogen in the confined gas. The flame does not need a large open volume if fuel and oxidizer can reach a reaction zone, the local temperature remains high enough, and the geometry allows the cell to move.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems“Tiny gap” does not mean “any gap under any conditions.” A real crevice may contain a different composition, pressure, surface material or ventilation pattern. The laboratory result establishes that narrow confinement is not automatically protective against burning. It does not provide a single minimum gap size for all hydrogen leaks.
Why the cold spaces do not stop the whole front
Between cells, the gas can remain cold and unburned. Those regions look like breaks in the flame, but they also contain fresh mixture that a neighboring cell may reach. Hydrogen’s rapid diffusion helps replenish the active edge, allowing the burning zones to leap, split or reconnect farther ahead.
Why the behavior matters for hydrogen safety
A leak can burn inside a crevice
Hydrogen storage systems, pipes, valves and fuel-cell hardware contain joints, seams and narrow clearances. If hydrogen accumulates in one of those spaces and finds an ignition source, combustion may be confined to a thin layer rather than forming a large, obvious flame. The study’s result challenges the assumption that wall heat losses alone will extinguish a very lean leak in a narrow passage.
Mario Sánchez-Sanz, who led the team at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, warned that the possibility of such flames near a fuel-storage depot increases accident risk. The concern is not that every leak will ignite, but that a leak that does ignite may continue burning in a location that is hard to inspect.

Low temperature and weak visibility complicate detection
The reported cellular flames can be dim and relatively low-temperature compared with a more robust, open flame. That makes visual detection unreliable, particularly in bright surroundings, behind equipment or inside a seam. A person may hear no dramatic flare and see no large flame even while hydrogen is being consumed.
The experiment does not establish that all hydrogen flames are invisible. Visibility depends on concentration, flow, pressure, background light, camera sensitivity and the amount of soot-free radiation produced by the flame. Its practical lesson is narrower and more important: a confined hydrogen flame can be difficult to detect, so absence of an obvious flame is not proof that a leak is harmless.
Implications for facilities and equipment
Engineers responsible for hydrogen systems should treat narrow spaces as possible combustion zones rather than assuming that they are self-quenching. A sensible safety approach includes:
- Using hydrogen detection appropriate to the installation instead of relying on eyesight alone.
- Providing ventilation that prevents hydrogen from accumulating in enclosed or high points.
- Controlling ignition sources during inspection, maintenance and leak response.
- Checking joints, seals, channels and protective covers where gas could collect or a flame could hide.
- Designing shutdown and isolation procedures that address a small persistent flame as well as a large visible fire.
These measures are general engineering practices, not a substitute for the applicable fire, pressure-vessel and hydrogen-safety requirements for a particular site.
How to interpret the “fractal” label
In everyday language, “fractal” means that the flame path contains repeated branching and irregular structure. The cells do not simply march as a straight line. A leading cell can divide, one branch can weaken, and another can continue toward unburned mixture. The overall track resembles a branching network.

The term should not be confused with a claim of infinite self-similarity or a precise fractal dimension. The researchers used the resemblance to describe the observed propagation. The important physical fact is the repeated splitting of flame cells under confinement, not a mathematical classification.
What this experiment proves—and what it does not
Established by the reported work
- Hydrogen–air combustion can persist in a transparent, millimetre-scale plate gap.
- Very lean mixtures, including a reported 5% hydrogen case, can burn in that confined geometry.
- A 3 mm gap supported a continuous front in the comparison, while a 2 mm gap produced separated cells.
- The reported 10.5% case showed fractal-like propagation, whereas 10.25% produced steadier straight-line cell motion.
- Rapid hydrogen diffusion and intense wall heat loss together explain why cells can survive after a continuous front breaks apart.
- The work was published in Physical Review Letters in 2020 by a team led from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
Not established by the footage alone
- A universal concentration or gap threshold that applies to every hydrogen installation.
- The flame speed, pressure rise or hazard distance for a full-scale tank, pipeline or fuel-cell system.
- That every hydrogen flame will be visible, invisible, continuous or fractal.
- That a laboratory plate arrangement reproduces the turbulence, ventilation and obstructions of an industrial facility.
Those limits matter when applying the result. The video is a warning about a possible failure mode in narrow spaces, not a complete fire-risk assessment for a particular design.
Why a tiny change can produce a different pattern
Combustion in this regime is governed by competing time scales. Chemical reaction must release heat quickly enough to sustain the flame. Heat must not be removed so quickly that the local gas falls below ignition-supporting temperatures. Hydrogen must diffuse into the reaction zone fast enough to replace fuel consumed by the cell.
Changing concentration by a fraction of a percentage point can alter all three balances at once. A slightly richer mixture may maintain a connected front, or it may support a faster cell that destabilizes and splits. A slightly narrower gap increases wall exposure and cooling. Because these effects interact rather than add independently, the transition between straight cellular motion and fractal-like branching can be abrupt.
The key takeaway from the footage
The slow-motion sequence captures a real confined hydrogen flame exploiting a narrow path that looks too cold and too lean for ordinary burning. Wall cooling tears the front apart; hydrogen diffusion keeps selected cells alive; those cells split and advance through fresh mixture. The result is a branching flame that is scientifically unusual and operationally important.
For anyone working around hydrogen, the practical message is straightforward: millimetre-scale gaps are not automatically safe, and a weak-looking or hard-to-see flame can still represent an active combustion hazard.
