For subscribers, the immediate answer is simpler: HBO Max says there are no immediate changes to its app, content, subscriptions, or pricing. What changes for HBO Max subscribers right now?
According to the HBO Max Help Center, “At this time, there are no immediate changes to the HBO Max or Paramount+ apps, including content, subscription, or pricing.” The help page also says people subscribed to more than one service can continue using each as they do today. Skydance’s October 6, 2026 completion announcement describes both as part of the combined company’s streaming portfolio.

The Associated Press reported on October 6, 2026 that the company plans to unify its streaming products “into a single service over time.” That is a reported strategic direction, not a completed migration or a detailed launch plan. The report did not establish the resulting service’s name, consumer price or choices, or a timetable. It also reported that CEO David Ellison has suggested HBO could retain some level of independence.

As of the cited announcements, there is no confirmed launch date, mandatory account transfer, single price, specific catalog arrangement, or announcement that HBO Max will shut down or lose its brand. Nor is the eventual app structure settled in the available reporting. Subscribers can make decisions based on the services they have today, but there is not enough confirmed information to compare hypothetical future plans.
Should you keep HBO Max, Paramount+, or both?
The deal does not by itself answer which subscriptions are worth keeping. Evaluate the services as they currently exist, using details available in your own account:

- What you watch: Consider the specific shows and films you want to access on each service.
- Your billing terms: Check each subscription’s current price, renewal date, and cancellation terms with the provider or billing platform you use.
- Access you rely on: Confirm the current app and device access you need, and whether keeping separate access to both catalogs matters to you.
The future unified service’s cost, tiers, catalog placement, and account migration have not been confirmed in the cited reporting, so they cannot yet provide a reliable basis for a keep-or-cancel decision.
What the deal’s regulatory review does—and does not—tell subscribers
On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said its investigation found the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition in streaming video on demand, linear television, or theatrical film distribution. That was the agency’s conclusion about its competition review; it does not guarantee unchanged prices, predict service quality, or determine the company’s future product choices. A separate states’ consent decree, described in a September 2026 SEC-filed Form 8-K, sets commitments for certain films counted toward the company’s U.S. theatrical-release obligations. Those qualifying films must receive a theatrical window of at least 45 days and cannot be made available on a subscription video-on-demand platform for at least 90 days following their initial U.S. theatrical exhibition. The decree also includes annual minimum film counts, wide-release requirements, independent-film provisions, and other conditions. These terms apply within the decree’s defined commitments; they do not set a streaming date for every movie, and they do not govern HBO Max series generally.

Warner Bros. Discovery reported 131.6 million streaming subscribers as of December 31, 2025 in its 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 26, 2026. This is the company’s aggregate measure across specified offerings, including HBO Max, Max, HBO, discovery+, and certain other services. It is neither an HBO Max-only count nor a post-acquisition total. The cited materials do not establish a current, independently sourced HBO Max-only subscriber figure after closing.
