The Nintendo Switch 2 remake is more than a graphics upgrade. It keeps Link’s story, Hyrule’s recognizable regions, the dungeon-led progression and the child/adult time-travel structure, but rebuilds the presentation and removes several long-standing control and navigation limitations. Confirmed changes include redesigned visuals and audio, jump and dash controls, modern camera and motion aiming, persistent time passage, voiced and expanded story scenes, microphone-responsive ocarina playing, the Threads of Time guidance system and the ZELDA NOTES companion service. Preview coverage also points to new side content, tougher minigames, Fairy Notes, boss rematches and small dungeon-layout revisions.
What stays the same
This is still The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time rather than a new open-world interpretation. Link’s journey against Ganondorf, the familiar Hyrule regions, the major dungeons and the division between his child and adult eras remain the framework. Hands-on coverage describes the broad map and structured exploration as intact, not replaced by a free-form system modeled on later open-world Zelda games. That distinction matters for returning players: the remake changes how you see, move through and understand the adventure, but it does not discard the sequence of regions, puzzle-focused dungeons or time-travel identity that defines the original.
Visuals, sound and performance are rebuilt
New materials and remodeled locations
Nintendo says the Switch 2 version was built from the ground up and has visuals “completely overhauled down to the textures of each material.” Locations are fully remodeled with additional environmental detail. This is a reconstruction of the visual assets rather than a simple resolution or texture patch. Nintendo’s announcement explains the overhaul at this official news page.

Faster, smoother presentation
The same announcement promises snappier actions, faster loading and smoother performance. Nintendo also lists refreshed sound and symphonic orchestral music. The product page summarizes the package as “completely overhauled visuals, voiced cutscenes, expanded dialogue, and symphonic orchestral music”: Nintendo Switch 2 product details. These changes affect every area and scene, not just newly added quests.
Link moves and aims differently
A dedicated jump and a dash
The original’s context-sensitive movement is supplemented by explicit commands. Nintendo confirms that Link can jump with a button and run or dash, allowing him to cover distance quickly and leap over gaps and obstacles. Its announcement describes the change as: “Jump and run freely with newly added button commands and enjoy improved camera control with the Right Stick.” Read the wording at Nintendo’s 40th-anniversary announcement.
Because jumping is now an intentional action, traversal is less dependent on finding a precisely positioned edge or relying on the original’s automatic hop behavior. The remake can therefore preserve familiar routes while making short gaps and ordinary movement feel more immediate.

Camera control is updated for the modern right stick. Aiming tools such as the slingshot and bow can also use motion controls, according to Nintendo’s announcement and the Nintendo UK game page at Nintendo UK. The result is a more direct way to look around, line up shots and correct the camera without the original control constraints.
The world now keeps time wherever Link is
Day and night continues in towns
The day/night cycle no longer stops at the boundaries of the adventure field. Nintendo says time continues wherever Link is, including towns. The UK page adds that new faces and foes may appear after sunset: Nintendo UK’s feature description.

This makes the clock a broader world-system rather than a detail mostly associated with travel and specific outdoor areas. Returning to a settlement at a different hour can change who or what you encounter, while the familiar locations remain recognizable.
More detailed versions of familiar places
Remodeled locations and persistent time are connected: the remake presents Hyrule as a more continuously simulated place, with visual detail and activity that can change as the hours pass. Nintendo has confirmed the system and the remodeled environments; exact schedules for individual characters or enemies are not specified on the cited pages.

The story is presented with more dialogue and voices
Expanded conversations and voiced cutscenes
Nintendo officially lists expanded dialogue and voiced cutscenes. GamesRadar’s preview reports that every character other than Link is voiced, although that is a preview observation rather than Nintendo’s formal feature wording. The report is available at GamesRadar.
The underlying plot is therefore familiar, but scenes can carry more spoken context and performance. The change is in delivery and characterization, not a replacement of Link’s quest or Ganondorf’s role.
Threads of Time makes progression easier to follow
A visual record of your adventure
Threads of Time provides an explicit progress and objective view. Nintendo describes a large tapestry that fills in as the adventure advances, showing story progress and the next objective. The system is detailed in the official announcement and on Nintendo UK’s game page.

For a first-time player, that addresses a common source of uncertainty in a 1998-era adventure: remembering which objective follows a major event and where the next clue belongs. It is guidance layered over the original progression, not an indication that the dungeons have been converted into open-ended activities.

The ocarina responds to your voice and instruments
Humming and real instruments
The Switch 2 microphone can recognize a player humming a learned song. Nintendo also says the game responds to real instruments, including new playable or electric ocarinas. Those capabilities are described in Nintendo’s announcement and its Australian overview trailer article: Nintendo Australia.
This changes the interaction itself: songs are no longer limited to button inputs, while the original melody-learning and song-based puzzle structure remains the context for using them. Nintendo has not stated that every song or every instrument behaves identically, so the confirmed claim is microphone responsiveness and support for the named instrument types.
Optional content and challenge additions
Hall of Fallen Heroes
The Hall of Fallen Heroes records defeated monsters and supports rematch battles. Nintendo’s overview describes it as a place to display enemies you have beaten and fight them again; the feature is covered at Nintendo Australia. This gives completed encounters a repeatable challenge function outside the first playthrough.

Nintendo lists these features in its announcement at Nintendo’s 40th-anniversary news page. They are companion activities rather than changes to the main dungeon sequence.
Fairy Notes and a less intrusive Navi role
GamesRadar’s hands-on preview reports Fairy Notes placed around Hyrule for Navi to read. The same report presents the mechanic as a way to make Navi’s guidance less annoying while preserving her role as a source of information: GamesRadar’s preview. Fairy Notes are preview-reported, so Nintendo’s final feature list should be treated as the authoritative statement about availability and behavior.

A Castle Town potion request
GamesRadar reports a new Castle Town potion-shop request. Completing it gives Link an empty bottle and, afterward, a healing red potion. This is a preview finding from GamesRadar’s hands-on coverage, not a complete Nintendo list of every side quest.
Tougher target shooting
The same preview describes a harder variant of the target-shooting activity. That suggests returning players may find optional challenges tuned beyond their original versions, although the preview does not establish a global difficulty setting or a full list of altered minigames.
Subtle Forest Temple revisions
GamesRadar also reports small changes to the Forest Temple layout. Creative Bloq’s hands-on account says the remake retains the broad layout and structured exploration while smoothing older friction. Boss rematches
Preview coverage mentions a boss-rematch mode, while Nintendo’s Hall of Fallen Heroes announcement confirms rematch battles for defeated monsters. The previews do not provide a definitive roster or explain whether every story boss is included, so the established change is repeatable combat content, not a claim that all bosses can be replayed.

How faithful is the remake?
Its faithfulness is structural rather than purely visual. The remake preserves the story, recognizable map, dungeon progression and time-travel premise, while changing the interface, audiovisual presentation and optional activities around them. New movement can make traversal more flexible; persistent time and expanded dialogue make the world feel more active; Threads of Time and ZELDA NOTES add guidance and repeatable activities for modern players.
At the same time, the available previews do not support claims of entirely new dungeons, a new open-world map or a rewritten central plot. The Forest Temple report concerns subtle layout adjustments, and the other reported additions are side content, challenge variants or companion features. Players seeking the N64 adventure’s route and pacing should recognize it, but should not expect a frame-for-frame restoration.
