The MacBook’s camera housing is fixed hardware, but it does not have to be useful only as a place to put the camera. Apple offers a built-in setting to keep app content clear of the housing; separate third-party utilities can use the surrounding screen area for quick controls, notes, timers, files, and glanceable information. Those are different approaches, and app features and requirements should be checked before installing anything.
What does the MacBook notch do by default?
Apple calls the cutout in the display bezel the camera housing. It appears on MacBook Air models with Liquid Retina displays and MacBook Pro models with Liquid Retina XDR displays. If an app’s controls or menu-bar items are obscured, macOS provides a per-app option called “Scale to fit below built-in camera.” It adjusts that app’s active display area so windows and the menu bar appear below the housing. Apple notes that the option may disappear when an app is updated for compatibility. See Apple’s instructions for adjusting app display settings.

That setting is a display-layout fix, not a way to add controls to the notch. Apple’s support guidance does not endorse third-party notch utilities; those are separate apps that draw their own interfaces.

Third-party utilities use the area around the camera housing as a compact panel for actions or information. Depending on the app, that can mean controlling media, staging files, checking system metrics or opening notes and timers without going to a full-size window. The feature lists below come from the developers or App Store listings, not independent testing.

NotchThings: a broad dashboard
The App Store listing describes a customizable dashboard with media controls, system metrics, notes, to-dos, clipboard history, weather, timers, AI usage tracking, an AirDrop shelf and camera preview. It also lists a teleprompter feature. The listing establishes what its publisher advertises, not how well each feature works in everyday use. See the NotchThings App Store listing.
Notchy: controls and developer-oriented features
The developer describes media controls, clipboard tools, timers, HUDs, message and notification features, shell activity, and a local developer API that is off by default. Its site reported version 1.0.178 and an update date of September 25, 2026; versions, compatibility, and capabilities can change, so check the current listing before relying on those details. Dynamic Notch: a control-center approach
The developer presents Dynamic Notch as a control-center-style utility. Its site listed macOS 14.6 or later, Apple Silicon, and a $5.99 one-time price in the details reviewed. These are changeable product terms, not a guarantee of current compatibility or price; verify them on the Dynamic Notch site before installing.
Top Notch: widgets and display options
The developer says Top Notch supports multiple displays and Dynamic Desktop wallpapers. Its App Store listing describes widgets for media, weather, clipboard, YouTube, Pomodoro, calendar, battery, shortcuts, quick notes, an activity feed and lyrics, as well as HUD replacement. How to decide whether a notch utility is worth installing
Start with a specific job you want the screen area to handle. A long feature list is less useful if the controls you need are buried, or if the app’s display behavior gets in the way of your work.
- Choose by task: Decide whether you mainly want a file shelf, media controls, quick notes, timers, system status, or a broader set of widgets.
- Check your Mac and macOS version: Confirm supported models, chip requirements, macOS version, and whether the utility can work on displays without a physical notch.
- Check how the panel behaves: Find out how it opens and closes and whether it can cover menu-bar items or interfere with other work.
- Review permissions and privacy terms: Pay particular attention to what notification, message, accessibility, or clipboard features require, and read the developer’s current privacy disclosures.
- Verify the price and payment model: Check the current developer or App Store page rather than relying on an older price or feature description.
Marketing descriptions alone do not establish privacy, reliability, resource use, or ease of use. No independent comparison cited here establishes which utility is fastest, safest, best designed, or best value.

Can you add Dynamic Island features to a Mac?
Notch utilities can provide a compact, notch-adjacent interface with controls or widgets, but that does not make the Mac camera housing Apple’s Dynamic Island. The products above are third-party software with their own feature sets and requirements; check each developer’s current terms and disclosures rather than assuming a shared Apple feature or behavior.
