The “every 24 minutes” figure describes historical calls to U.S. poison centers about dietary supplement exposures—not confirmed poisonings happening at that rate today. A 2017 announcement from Nationwide Children’s Hospital summarized 274,998 exposure cases recorded from 2000 through 2012, averaging about one call every 24 minutes over that period. The announcement reports cases entered into the National Poison Data System, not a current 2026 rate.
What the 24-minute figure measured
The statistic comes from research summarized on July 24, 2017, by Nationwide Children’s Hospital’s Center for Injury Research and Policy and Central Ohio Poison Center. The researchers counted 274,998 dietary supplement exposure cases reported to poison centers during 2000–2012. The “one call every 24 minutes” wording is an average across those 13 years, not a claim that an exposure occurs at precisely regular intervals.

An exposure call is not automatically a confirmed poisoning or an injury. Poison centers may receive calls about a range of possible exposures, and the announcement does not say every person became ill. The data were drawn from the National Poison Data System, maintained by the American Association of Poison Control Centers and populated by participating poison centers serving the United States and its territories. The announcement is a summary; detailed methods and subgroup data are not established by that release.
Who was exposed, and what happened?
Young children accounted for most calls. The 2017 announcement says 70% involved children younger than six, and most of those exposures were unintentional. Nearly all exposures happened at home: 97.3% were reported in that setting. In more than 97% of cases involving a child, the child swallowed the substance.

Most reported cases did not have a serious medical outcome. Serious outcomes were reported in 4.5% of exposures; 95% of the most serious outcomes occurred among people six years and older, according to the announcement. That does not mean older people were responsible for 95% of calls, nor that every serious outcome involved the same product type.
Types of supplements in exposure calls
The announcement grouped calls by product category. Miscellaneous substances in commonly used supplements accounted for 43.9% of calls, botanicals for 31.9%, hormonal products for 15.1%, and other supplements for 5.1%. Amino acids, cultural medicines, and energy products each accounted for less than 2% of calls. Energy products, botanicals, and cultural medicines had the highest proportion of serious medical outcomes in the study summary; that is a comparison of proportions, not a claim that these categories caused the largest number of serious outcomes.

Why the rate changed during the study
The announcement describes three phases in reported call rates: an increase of 46.1% during 2000–2002, a decrease of 8.8% during 2002–2005, and an increase of 49.3% during 2005–2012. It says the middle-period decline most likely resulted from the FDA ban on ma huang, a botanical stimulant previously found in some supplements. That is the announcement’s proposed explanation, not proof that the ban alone caused the decrease.
What FDA oversight does—and does not—mean
Dietary supplements are not subject to the same general premarket FDA approval for safety and effectiveness as drugs. FDA explains that it is not authorized to approve supplements for safety and effectiveness before they are marketed, and companies may in many cases introduce products without notifying the agency. FDA’s consumer guidance also says companies are responsible for product safety and legal compliance. The agency describes post-market oversight that includes facility inspections, label review, and monitoring adverse-event reports and complaints.

So “not preapproved” is more accurate than saying supplements are unregulated. It also does not mean every supplement is unsafe. FDA advises consumers to get informed and speak with a doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional before deciding whether to purchase or use a supplement.
How to reduce the risk of a child’s accidental exposure
Because the study announcement found that most calls involved young children and nearly all exposures occurred at home, storage is a practical prevention step. FDA advises keeping medicines and dietary supplements where children cannot see or reach them. Its household guidance cautions against leaving containers on counters or treating purses and briefcases as hiding places.

- Put supplements away promptly after use, rather than leaving bottles out between doses.
- Store them out of children’s sight and reach; a lockable medicine storage box is one optional way to help achieve that goal, not a guarantee against access.
- Keep supplements in their original containers so labels and product details remain available if there is a question about exposure.
- Follow the product’s label and consult a health professional about whether a supplement is appropriate, especially when a child or someone taking medication may be exposed.
The study authors called for child-resistant packaging and caregiver education, especially in light of findings involving energy products and yohimbe. That is a research recommendation; the announcement does not establish that any particular package or storage device prevents all exposures.
What to do after a suspected exposure
If someone may have swallowed or otherwise been exposed to a supplement, contact your local poison center promptly for case-specific advice. If the person is having severe symptoms or appears to be in immediate danger, call emergency services. Do not use this population-level study statistic to judge an individual exposure or delay urgent care.
