How to Find Function Duplicates by Comparing Their Behavior

Compare candidate functions on identical inputs to find concrete behavioral differences. Learn what matching probes can show—and why they cannot prove equivalence.

Run two candidate functions on the same inputs and compare what callers can observe. A disagreement gives you a concrete counterexample, even when the implementations look very different. Agreement on a finite sample is useful evidence, but it does not prove the functions equivalent for every possible input.

What does it mean for two functions to be duplicates?

Two functions are equivalent only relative to an input domain, assumptions, and a definition of observable behavior. Comparing return values may be enough for a pure function, but it can miss differences that matter to callers: exceptions, mutations, I/O, ordering, or other side effects. Decide what counts as an observable result before comparing implementations.

This is behavioral duplicate discovery, not a claim that the source code is textually duplicated. Functions can have substantially different syntax yet behave alike on the domain that matters; conversely, similar-looking code can diverge on an edge case.

How to compare candidate functions

1. Generate candidates before executing them

A large repository may contain too many function pairs to test exhaustively. First prioritize likely matches using structural or semantic signals, fingerprints, or clustering. Those signals select pairs for investigation; they do not establish equivalence. The Ditto project describes a JavaScript and TypeScript workflow that extracts functions, fingerprints them, and clusters likely matches before probing them. Ditto’s repository documentation is a project description, not an independent evaluation of its candidate coverage.

  • 【Dual USB Connectivity】Comes with both USB-A and Type-C cables for universal compatibility with older PCs, modern laptops, and devices, ensuring hassle-free plug-and-play across Windows, Mac, Linux, and Ubuntu.

2. Run both functions on identical inputs

For a pair that can be executed safely, supply the same input to each and compare the observations you defined. If the outputs or relevant effects differ, the shared input is a counterexample to equivalence under those conditions. Record the input and both outcomes so the difference can be reproduced and checked in a regression test.

Ditto documents a pair of truncation helpers that agree at some boundary values but diverge at a nearby limit. That is the project’s demonstration of how a probe can expose a subtle mismatch; it is not an independently reproduced test result.

3. Probe boundaries, not only typical inputs

A handful of ordinary examples can leave the important branches untouched. Build a deterministic set of probes around the function’s domain and control flow, then add generated or randomized inputs where appropriate. Useful categories include:

  • Empty and minimal valid inputs.
  • Values at, just below, and just above documented limits.
  • Negative values when the function accepts them.
  • Malformed or unusual values if they are part of the calling contract.
  • Inputs that exercise different branches, loop counts, or boundary conditions.

Keep generated cases reproducible—for example, by recording the seed or saving any input that reveals a mismatch. A discovered disagreement is only useful if a reviewer can run it again.

4. Treat execution safety as part of the method

Executing code is not automatically safe. Functions may mutate shared state, perform I/O, hang, or have other effects. Ditto says its sandbox executes only pure functions and labels findings for impure functions as predicted rather than executed. That is a design choice described by the project, not a universal safety guarantee for every runtime. In your own workflow, isolate untrusted code and restrict effects before running it; if that cannot be done reliably, use static analysis or a controlled test harness instead.

What the result does—and does not—establish

Approach What it answers Strength Limit
Differential execution on selected inputs Did the implementations differ on the cases run? A mismatch can provide a concrete, reproducible counterexample. Matching samples establish agreement only on those samples, not on untested inputs.
Formal equivalence checking informed by executions Can a solver establish a specified relationship within a model and its assumptions? Can support a stronger equivalence claim within the modeled scope. Requires suitable models and tractable proof obligations; a solver may time out.

Berkeley Roshan Churchill’s June 2019 Stanford dissertation describes a workflow in which executions on supplied cases help infer alignment and invariants, separate test cases challenge candidate models, and an SMT solver checks proof obligations. Execution contributes evidence and helps shape the proof; it is not itself the proof. Any formal claim still depends on the modeled functions, input assumptions, and semantics.

  • USB 2.0 Type-C interface with up to 16G sample depth in stream mode
  • Support for adjustable threshold and shielded wires for a better, cleaner waveform

The dissertation reports verification of 55 of 56 vectorization benchmarks, with one timeout. That figure describes the dissertation’s particular method and benchmark suite, not a general accuracy rate for clone detectors. The work also notes that equivalence checking commonly needs assumptions that exclude undefined behavior, and that proof attempts can time out. See the Stanford dissertation record.

Where behavioral comparison fits in code review

Use execution as a focused investigation after candidate generation, or as a way to challenge a refactor or suspected duplicate. A sensible review record includes the candidate pair, the input domain and assumptions, the observations compared, the probes run, and any counterexamples. If all probes match, report that as sampled agreement—not proof.

When assessing a tool or designing an internal workflow, examine candidate recall, false-positive control, supported languages and function forms, input generation, side-effect handling, execution isolation, and whether the result is a sampled match or a formal proof. These are distinct dimensions: a tool that proposes useful pairs does not necessarily test them safely or establish equivalence.

Ditto’s repository reports measurements across five repositories: 5,897 functions, 163 duplicate clusters, and 18 conflicts proven by execution. Those are self-reported project figures; they have not been independently validated and should not be treated as an estimate of duplication prevalence or tool accuracy. See the project’s repository.
