What Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Can and Cannot Do

Tesla FSD (Supervised) can assist with driving and parking maneuvers, but it does not make a Tesla autonomous. The driver must watch the road and be ready to take over.

Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised), or FSD (Supervised), can attempt route-following, lane changes, turns, intersection maneuvers, highway entry and exit, and some parking tasks. It is still a driver-assistance system: the driver must watch the road and be ready to take control immediately. Which features are available depends on the individual vehicle, its configuration and software, and the region.

What FSD (Supervised) is—and what the name does not mean

Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as a suite of advanced driver-assistance features. The name does not mean that the car can drive without a supervising driver. Tesla says its enabled features do not make a vehicle fully autonomous or replace the driver. The Model 3 manual likewise tells drivers to pay attention to the road and be prepared to act immediately. Tesla’s feature description and manual guidance on self-driving features make that distinction explicit.

A useful way to understand the system is as assistance with parts of a drive, not a handoff of responsibility. It may attempt a maneuver, but the driver remains responsible for supervising what the car is doing, noticing when the situation is changing, and intervening if needed. A route that the system can attempt is not a promise that it will handle every road, object, or decision successfully.

That distinction matters even when a feature appears to be carrying out a task smoothly. An attempt to follow navigation or negotiate an intersection does not certify that the route is correct, the roadway is clear, or a gap in traffic is safe. The driver’s role continues throughout the drive, rather than ending once the system is engaged.

What it can attempt while driving

Tesla’s support page describes route-based driving assistance on various road types, including residential and city streets. The Model 3 Owner’s Manual gives examples of the driving tasks FSD (Supervised) may attempt. These are manufacturer descriptions, not guarantees that every function is installed, available in a particular location, or suitable for every situation.

Follow a route and make route-related choices

The system may attempt to follow a route and select route forks. In practice, that means it can assist with carrying out navigation decisions while driving; it does not mean the driver can stop monitoring whether the car is following the intended route or responding appropriately to the road.

Change lanes and navigate around vehicles or objects

Tesla says FSD (Supervised) can make lane changes and navigate around vehicles and objects. These tasks require the system to respond to surrounding traffic and roadway conditions. The feature description does not establish that it will recognize or respond correctly to every object or traffic situation, so keep watching and be ready to intervene rather than assuming the path is clear.

Handle turns, intersections, stop signs, and roundabouts

The Model 3 manual says the system attempts to stop at and negotiate intersections, stop signs, and roundabouts, and to make turns. Tesla’s support page also lists left and right turns. Complex intersections are specifically identified as a situation where intervention may be needed. Treat the system’s attempt as something to supervise, not as confirmation that every approach, gap, or turn is safe.

Enter or exit highways

The Model 3 manual describes attempts to enter and exit highways. This does not remove the need to monitor the maneuver or surrounding traffic. The same manual cautions that intervention can be required in difficult conditions; it does not provide a universal list of every circumstance in which the system may need help.

What it can attempt when parking or moving the car

Autopark

Tesla describes Autopark as assistance with parallel or perpendicular parking. The driver should continue supervising the maneuver and be prepared to stop or take control if the car’s movement or surroundings call for it. The support-page description does not establish that Autopark is available on every vehicle or that it can manage every parking space.

Summon features

Tesla also describes Summon features through the Tesla app. Availability and behavior can vary by vehicle and region, so consult the specific car’s displayed controls and owner’s manual before relying on a feature. App-based operation does not change the central rule: FSD (Supervised) does not make the vehicle autonomous, and the driver must remain attentive and ready to intervene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you may need to take over

The Model 3 Owner’s Manual specifically warns that intervention may be necessary on narrow roads with oncoming cars, in construction zones, and at complex intersections. These are examples, not a complete catalog of possible trouble spots. Road layouts, traffic, and other conditions can change, and the sources do not promise that the system will handle every hazard.

  • Narrow roads with oncoming traffic: The manual identifies these as a situation where driver intervention may be needed. Pay particular attention to how the car is positioned and how traffic is approaching.
  • Construction zones: The manual also names construction zones. Do not assume the system will interpret temporary layouts or changing conditions as intended.
  • Complex intersections: Intersections are among the maneuvers the system may attempt, but the manual warns that complex ones can require intervention. Continue monitoring the car’s path and decisions.

These examples should not be treated as the only reasons to intervene. If you see that the car is not responding appropriately, or believe a maneuver may be unsafe, be ready to take control. Tesla’s manual says drivers must be prepared to take immediate action at any time.

There is no basis in these feature descriptions for treating a particular road type as a guarantee of hands-off operation. Tesla describes use on residential and city streets as well as route-related maneuvers, but the Model 3 manual’s cautions show that difficulty can arise within the kinds of drives the system attempts. Stay alert on familiar streets as well as unfamiliar ones.

What the driver must still do

Keep attention on the road while FSD (Supervised) is engaged. Do not read, sleep, use a phone, or assume the system will resolve every hazard. Stay ready to take control immediately if the situation calls for it. Those practical limits follow from Tesla’s own supervision requirement: the feature is not a substitute for an attentive driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For U.S. drivers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that every vehicle currently for sale in the United States requires the driver’s full attention at all times for safe operation. NHTSA distinguishes vehicles currently available for purchase from automated driving systems being tested or piloted; a driver-assistance feature in a purchasable car does not remove the driver’s role. See NHTSA’s automated-vehicle safety guidance for that U.S. context.

Tesla’s Model 3 manual puts the responsibility directly on the driver: “It is your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the limitations of these features, pay attention to the road, and be ready to take immediate action at any time.” In practical terms, that means learning the limits described for your vehicle and not treating a successful maneuver earlier in a trip as proof that the next one will be handled safely.

How to check what your Tesla can do

Do not assume that a feature shown in another owner’s car, or described in a manual for another configuration, applies to yours. Tesla says availability can depend on the vehicle’s configuration, hardware, software version, model, trim, model year, and region. Its Model 3 manual also notes that features may not be installed or may not operate exactly as described depending on factors such as market region, manufacture date, options, hardware, and software.

  1. Identify the exact vehicle. Use the manual for your specific model and configuration rather than generalizing from another Tesla.
  2. Read the relevant manual section. For a Model 3, Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) manual section describes intended maneuvers and gives examples of situations requiring intervention.
  3. Check the car’s displayed controls and current availability. Tesla’s support page notes that availability varies. Confirm what the specific vehicle presents rather than relying on a feature list from a different market or software version.
  4. Supervise every use. Even when the feature is available and engaged, remain attentive and prepared to take over. Availability is not a guarantee of safe or successful performance in every circumstance.

The controls and feature set can change with software and vehicle configuration. The documentation cited here does not establish one universal set of steps or controls for every Tesla, so use the instructions displayed in the individual vehicle.

In particular, a feature list for one model year, trim, or region should not be used as a checklist for another vehicle. Tesla’s manual warns that a described feature may not be installed, or may not operate exactly as described, depending on the market region, date of manufacture, configuration, options, hardware, and software. Verify what is available in the specific car rather than relying on a video, an older description, or another owner’s experience.

How to interpret Tesla’s published safety figures

Tesla’s support page attributes two comparisons to its Vehicle Safety Report: vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged experience “7x fewer major and minor collisions” and “5x fewer off-highway collisions” than vehicles driven without it. The support-page summary does not provide enough information about comparison design, mileage or exposure definitions, or adjustment methods to establish that these are like-for-like comparisons. The page does not state a publication year for the figures.

These numbers should therefore be described as Tesla-published claims, not as independently verified findings or proof that the feature caused a reduction in collisions. They also do not alter the driver’s supervision obligation. A reader evaluating the figures should look for the underlying report’s definitions and methodology before drawing conclusions about how the comparison applies to their own driving.

The support-page figures are comparisons between vehicles with FSD (Supervised) engaged and vehicles driven without it, as Tesla presents them. Without details such as mileage or exposure definitions and adjustment methods, the summary alone does not show whether the groups had comparable driving conditions or how the results were calculated. The figures are not a reason to relax attention, and they should not be generalized into a prediction about an individual trip or driver.

Regulatory context and what it does—and does not—show

NHTSA’s general guidance supports a clear distinction between driver assistance and autonomous driving for vehicles currently for sale in the United States: the driver must remain fully attentive for safe operation. That statement is U.S.-specific and should not be treated as a summary of the law or requirements in every country.

A November 5, 2024 document from NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation discusses FSD-Supervised driver-engagement communications and crash reports involving low-visibility conditions. It is historical regulatory context, not evidence by itself of the current status or disposition of any investigation. The document is available as a dated NHTSA record; consult current agency records before making claims about a present-day investigation outcome.

The practical answer

FSD (Supervised) can attempt a broad set of driving and parking maneuvers, including route following, lane changes, turns, intersection negotiation, highway entry and exit, Autopark, and app-based Summon features. The exact set depends on the car and where it is used. None of that makes the vehicle autonomous: the driver must keep watching the road and be ready to take over immediately, especially when conditions become difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does FSD (Supervised) drive the car by itself?

No. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as driver assistance, not autonomous driving. The driver must supervise the vehicle and be ready to take control immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I have to pay attention while using Tesla FSD?

Yes. Keep your attention on the road and remain ready to intervene. Do not read, sleep, use a phone, or assume the system will resolve every hazard.

When might I need to take over?

Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual gives narrow roads with oncoming cars, construction zones, and complex intersections as examples where intervention may be needed. Those examples are not a complete list, so take control whenever the car’s behavior or conditions call for it.

Does every Tesla have the same FSD (Supervised) features?

No. Availability can depend on model, trim, model year, vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, and region. Check the specific vehicle’s manual and displayed controls.

The Bottom Line

FSD (Supervised) can attempt driving and parking maneuvers, but it is not autonomous and does not take over the driver’s responsibility. Check the exact feature availability for your car, stay attentive throughout every use, and be ready to intervene immediately.
