Eco or Auto Power Save modes can reduce brightness, and LG says Energy Saving may lower peak screen brightness. Set the affected input to Standard picture mode, turn Energy Saving Step off using the webOS-specific path below, then reset picture settings if needed.
Temporary dimming during a large or persistent still image can instead be OLED screen-protection behavior. A dark menu, a dark section of the panel, or a picture that remains abnormally dark across inputs points to a signal or hardware problem that needs further checking.

What a “too dark” LG OLED picture usually means
Brightness problems fall into several different categories, and identifying which one you have prevents unnecessary resets or service calls. LG’s own troubleshooting guidance points first to Eco or Auto Power Save picture modes and the Energy Saving setting. Those controls can intentionally reduce the light output of the panel.

Picture controls are stored per input, so a television can look correct on one HDMI port but dim on another. A loose HDMI or antenna connection can also produce a poor-looking picture. OLED sets may additionally dim themselves while protecting the panel from large or persistent still images. Finally, room lighting, reflections, the picture settings, and the video itself change how bright the image appears even when the television is operating normally.

Use the symptom table as a starting point, then follow the numbered procedure in order.
| What you see | Most useful direction | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The whole picture is dim on one or more inputs, but menus are readable | A power-saving or picture-mode setting is limiting brightness | Picture mode, then Energy Saving Step |
| Only one HDMI source or one channel looks dark | That input has its own picture settings or a signal-path problem | Compare another input and inspect the HDMI or antenna connection |
| The screen dims while showing a large white still image or another still image for a while | OLED screen-protection behavior may be active | Resume ordinary moving video and see whether brightness returns |
| The settings menu itself is too dark to read | A problem beyond the program source is possible | Contact LG support if the menu remains unreadable |
| Only a portion of the panel is dark | An internal display issue is possible | Contact LG support rather than repeatedly changing picture controls |
The menu labels and locations below are based on LG’s July 2026 support guide and can vary by model and software version. If a label is absent, look for the equivalent Energy Saving or Picture control in your model’s settings.
Fix the two settings most likely to reduce brightness
1. Check the picture mode on the affected input
Open the picture controls while viewing the input that looks dark. If the mode is Eco or Auto Power Save, switch to Standard as a diagnostic. LG identifies those automatic modes as possible causes of a dim picture; Standard gives you a neutral baseline for testing.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Repeat this check for every source that shows the problem. LG says picture settings can differ by input, so changing the mode while watching a streaming app does not necessarily change the mode saved for an HDMI device, antenna channel, or game console.
2. Turn Energy Saving Step off
Energy Saving can reduce peak screen brightness. On supported models it can also use an ambient-light sensor, so the selected level may change brightness as the room gets lighter or darker. Use the route matching your television’s webOS generation:
| TV generation | Menu path supplied by LG |
|---|---|
| 2026 and newer TVs (webOS 26 or later) | Settings → All Settings → System → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off |
| 2022 and newer TVs (webOS 22 or later) | Settings → All Settings → General → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off |
| 2021 TVs (webOS 6.0) | Settings → All Settings → Support → Energy Saving → Energy Saving Step → Off |
| 2020 and older TVs (webOS 5.0 or earlier) | Settings → All Settings → Picture → Energy Saving → Off |
These paths come from LG’s “How to fix a dark or dim picture on your LG TV” guide, published July 28, 2026. The route can still differ for a particular model. After selecting Off, remain on the same input and check whether the picture becomes more consistent.

Adjust OLED Pixel Brightness only when your model exposes it
On 2021–2022 models, LG documents a separate OLED Pixel Brightness control at All Settings → Picture → Advanced Custom Settings → Brightness → OLED Pixel Brightness. A value closer to 100 makes the picture brighter.
This is not a universal menu path or a control available in every mode. LG notes that the adjustment may be unavailable while Auto Power Saving is active, which is why disabling the relevant power-saving option comes first. Older software uses different picture-mode controls, so do not assume that the 2021–2022 route applies to a 2020 set or a newer webOS release.
Change the control gradually and judge it with ordinary program material rather than a single bright test image. If the control is missing, greyed out, or named differently, use your model’s documented Picture settings instead of forcing a different procedure.
Reset picture settings when a profile is stuck
If Standard mode and Energy Saving Step Off do not correct the affected input, reset its picture settings. LG’s current guidance places the reset in different locations by model year:
- 2021 and newer sets: look under Picture → Advanced Settings.
- 2020 and older sets: look under Picture → Picture Mode Settings.
The remote shortcut for resetting picture settings also varies by model year. Use the on-screen command if you are unsure which shortcut applies. A reset changes the picture profile for the input, so note any custom settings you intentionally want to recreate afterward.
LG’s support instructions are summarized in the same 2026 troubleshooting guide. Resetting is useful for an incorrect profile; it will not repair a dark region of the panel or a faulty source connection.

Determine whether the source, not the panel, is dark
Compare inputs and channels
Play moving video from a second source. For example, compare an internal television app with an HDMI device, or compare two antenna channels. If only one source is affected, concentrate on that source’s picture profile and connection rather than changing global settings.
Because LG stores picture settings by input, write down which input shows the symptom before you begin. A change made while watching one source may appear to do nothing if you later switch to another source with a different profile.
Reseat HDMI and antenna connections
Turn off the source device, then check that the HDMI plug is fully seated at both ends. For antenna television, check the coaxial connection at the wall or antenna and at the TV. Reconnect firmly and test the same program again. LG lists a loose external connection as a possible reason for a dark or poor picture.
A cable check is especially important when menus look normal but a particular box, console, or channel does not. If another input is bright and stable, the panel is less likely to be the immediate cause.
Understand automatic OLED dimming during still images
LG OLED televisions use screen-performance algorithms and protection behavior. LG explains that the set may automatically darken or activate screen protection when a large area displays a still white image, when a still image remains for a period, or when a still image persists in one area.
This can happen with a paused bright screen, a static computer window, a game interface that remains unchanged, or another fixed graphic. Temporary dimming during those conditions is not, by itself, evidence of a failed panel. Return to ordinary moving content and observe whether the brightness recovers. Do not use a long-lived still image as your only brightness test.

Energy Saving is a separate mechanism. On supported models it can use an ambient-light sensor, and its selected level affects screen brightness. If the picture changes as room lighting changes, check Energy Saving Step before treating the behavior as OLED protection.
LG describes these behaviors in “[LG webOS TV] – Automatic Power Saving Mode”, published August 14, 2025. The protection explanation supports treating still-image dimming as a possible safeguard, not diagnosing a hardware fault from that symptom alone.
Account for room light, reflections, and the video itself
A technically unchanged OLED image can look darker in a bright room. Window light and lamps raise the amount of light reflected from the screen, reducing perceived contrast. The material being watched matters too: a dimly graded film, a dark game scene, or a stream with its own picture processing can appear darker than a bright broadcast.
LG’s picture-settings guidance identifies room lighting, screen reflectance, picture settings, and the video itself as factors in perceived image appearance. For a fair check, compare the same moving scene at a similar time of day, reduce direct light falling on the screen, and use the same input profile. These checks help separate perception and source mastering from a setting that is actually limiting the panel.
Do not infer a panel fault solely because one movie is darker than another. A fault becomes more plausible when the menu is also dim, a consistent dark area appears, or every source remains affected after the documented settings and connection checks.
Use the menu itself to separate a settings issue from a hardware issue
When the menu is bright enough to read
If the settings overlay is clear while a program is dark, start with the input-specific picture mode, Energy Saving Step, and source connection. The television can render its own interface normally while a single HDMI device or channel has a separate profile or signal problem.

When the menu is also very dark
If the on-screen settings are too dark to read, the symptom is not confined to one program. Follow the picture and Energy Saving checks if you can navigate them, then contact LG support if the menu remains unreadable.
When only part of the screen is dark
A dark strip, corner, or other localized region is different from whole-screen dimming caused by Eco mode or Energy Saving. LG’s troubleshooting guidance treats partial-screen darkness as a reason to seek support. Record whether the affected area appears on the menu, internal apps, and every external input; that information helps support distinguish a panel issue from a source issue.
A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Identify the scope. Note whether the whole screen or only a region is dark, whether the menu is affected, and which input or channel shows the problem.
- Switch the affected input to Standard picture mode. This removes Eco or Auto Power Save as the first variable. Test moving video.
- Turn Energy Saving Step off. Use the webOS-generation path in the table above. If the option is missing, consult the equivalent control for your model.
- Check OLED Pixel Brightness when available. On documented 2021–2022 models, use All Settings → Picture → Advanced Custom Settings → Brightness → OLED Pixel Brightness and move the value closer to 100 only as needed.
- Reset picture settings. Use Picture → Advanced Settings on 2021 and newer sets, or Picture → Picture Mode Settings on 2020 and older sets.
- Compare another source. Test an internal app, another HDMI input, or another antenna channel to determine whether the symptom follows the source.
- Inspect and reseat the connection. Check both ends of the HDMI or antenna cable, then retest.
- Check for still-image protection. If dimming begins with a large or persistent still image but not ordinary moving content, allow the set to return to normal video before judging the result.
- Control the viewing conditions. Compare the same scene with less direct room light and verify that the video itself is not unusually dark.
- Escalate the right symptom. Contact LG support for an unreadable menu, a persistent dark section, or a picture that remains abnormally dark across sources after these checks.
What not to assume
- Do not assume every dim picture is burn-in. LG documents temporary dimming as possible protection during large or persistent still images; that behavior alone does not establish permanent damage.
- Do not assume one menu path fits every LG OLED. Energy Saving locations differ between webOS generations and can vary by model.
- Do not adjust a setting that your model does not expose. OLED Pixel Brightness is documented for certain generations and may be unavailable while Auto Power Saving is active.
- Do not keep changing global settings for a one-input problem. Picture profiles can be input-specific, so diagnose the source that actually looks dark.
- Do not buy a new television or cable as the first response. The documented first-line fixes are settings checks and a connection inspection.
Is a replacement remote relevant?
LG’s procedures require a working remote to navigate settings. If the supplied remote is missing or faulty, a compatible replacement LG Magic Remote may be necessary to perform the checks. Compatibility depends on the exact television model; LG’s support material does not identify one universal replacement model, so verify compatibility before purchasing. A replacement remote is an access solution, not a treatment for a dark panel.
