What Technology Would Astronauts Need to Explore Lunar Caves?

Astronauts would need a coordinated system for reaching, mapping, and communicating inside a lunar cave. NASA has outlined key technologies and concepts, but no complete flight-ready crewed cave system is established.

Astronauts would need more than a spacesuit and a rover to explore a lunar cave. A mission would have to find and assess an entrance, reach it safely, descend, navigate and map dark, uncertain terrain, and keep people and equipment powered and connected. Robots could take on dangerous scouting tasks, while crew systems would need to support mobility, communications, thermal management, dust protection, and life support. NASA has described key technologies and mission concepts, but the material available does not establish a complete, flight-ready system for astronauts to explore a lunar cave.

What technologies would a lunar cave mission need?

NASA’s technical report Technologies Enabling Exploration of Skylights, Lava Tubes and Caves identifies five central problems: access, movement inside the cave, gathering and processing scientific data, power, and communications. In practice, solving those problems also calls for reconnaissance, autonomous robotics, mapping, and crew systems.

Capability What it would do What NASA’s material establishes
Reconnaissance and access Locate and characterize an opening, select a safe staging area, and get equipment or crew down to the cave. NASA’s Spelunker is a concept for landing on a skylight rim and lowering a tethered hub; it is not an operational lunar mission.
Mobility and autonomy Move over slopes, rubble, drops, and other uncertain terrain; detect hazards and recover from problems. NASA research considered autonomous robots that combine driving and hopping. No single cave rover design is established.
Sensing and mapping Illuminate or otherwise sense surroundings, build terrain and cave models, and collect science data. NASA identifies subsurface sensing and modeling as needs, but does not specify a final astronaut cave-sensor kit.
Power Keep robots, lights, sensors, computers, and radios operating for the mission’s duration. Power is a cave-mission challenge, and NASA lists reliable generation and storage among lunar surface infrastructure priorities. No cave-exploration power architecture is selected.
Communications and navigation Maintain contact and determine position when terrain blocks a direct link to surface or orbital systems. NASA has described a tethered power-and-communications hub in the Spelunker concept and is developing broader lunar communications and navigation capabilities. These are not an operational underground network.
Crew systems Allow astronauts to move, see, communicate, manage heat and dust, and remain supported inside a cave. NASA’s EVA and Human Surface Mobility work is relevant foundation, not proof of a cave-rated suit, crewed cave rover, or detailed cave life-support system.

How would a mission reach and enter a cave?

Find and assess a promising opening

Before a crew could descend, a mission would need to locate a pit or skylight, characterize its rim and interior, and determine whether it leads to a void that is accessible and traversable. A visible opening alone does not establish that a cave lies beneath it or that people can safely enter.

NASA reported in 2022 that more than 200 lunar pits had been identified and that about 16 were considered probable collapsed lava tubes. These are reported counts and an interpretation of the features, not confirmation that every pit opens into a usable cave. Reconnaissance would need to inform where to stage or land, how to approach the edge, and whether descent is viable.

Choose a descent approach

NASA’s Spelunker concept illustrates one possible approach: land a system at a skylight rim and lower a tethered hub. That concept suggests how a mission might combine access, power, and communications, but it does not establish a selected descent method or demonstrate that astronauts have descended into a lunar cave. A crewed mission would also need a way to assess the opening and manage the risks of lowering equipment or people into it.

What would robots do underground?

Robots could scout first, investigate hazards that are difficult for people to reach, and provide information that helps crews decide where to go. They would need enough autonomy to handle uncertain ground and keep working when continuous human control is impractical. NASA’s research considered hybrid driving and hopping, while JPL’s NeBula work addresses autonomous robot capabilities, long-range traversability, and human-robot interaction intended for astronaut-facing missions.

These efforts point to useful capabilities, not a settled lunar cave robot. A mission would have to decide how much control rests with astronauts, how much the robot can do on its own, and how to recover it if it becomes stuck, loses communication, or encounters terrain it cannot cross. Sending a robot ahead can transfer some risk away from the crew, but it does not remove the need to plan for failure.

How would explorers see, map, and study a cave?

In darkness, crews and robots would need active sensing and a way to turn observations into useful models of the terrain and cave geometry. Mapping would support route selection, hazard assessment, navigation, and scientific work. Data processing matters as well: a sensor is useful only if the mission can interpret its output and make it available to the people or systems making decisions.

The appropriate sensing range and science payload would depend on the cave and mission goals. Longer-range sensing in a large tube may require more power, and NASA’s available cave-exploration material does not define a final sensor package or science instrument set. Lighting, sensing, onboard computing, and communications therefore need to be planned together rather than treated as independent add-ons.

How would power, communications, and navigation work?

Power for equipment and endurance

Robotic mobility, lights, sensing, computers, and radios all draw energy. A mission would need to match power generation and storage to the equipment, operating time, and distance from its staging point. The cave report identifies power as a core challenge, while NASA’s lunar surface technology priorities include reliable generation and storage. Neither establishes a final power design for a crewed cave expedition.

Links through obstructed terrain

A cave wall or the geometry of a pit can block a direct radio path to surface or orbital systems. Spelunker’s tethered hub is one design approach: a tether could connect equipment below with a communications point near the opening, while also serving as a power link in the concept. Relays or other link architectures are additional design possibilities, not evidence of an existing lunar underground communications network.

Navigation also depends on knowing where the crew or robot is relative to the entrance, mapped terrain, and planned route. NASA is developing communications and navigation architectures for lunar surface and orbital assets, but those broader efforts do not by themselves solve positioning inside a cave.

What would astronauts need to stay safe?

NASA’s EVA and Human Surface Mobility program covers lunar spacewalk and surface-mobility development that could contribute to future missions. A cave expedition would still have to address the demands of its particular route and environment, including suit mobility, lighting, communications, thermal management, dust protection, and life support. Those are requirements to solve; NASA’s available material does not establish a cave-rated spacesuit or a detailed cave-specific life-support configuration.

Safety planning would also have to account for the descent and return, uncertain ground, limited visibility, communications interruptions, power endurance, and equipment recovery. The mission design would need to determine which tasks robots can perform before or alongside astronauts and what conditions would require the crew to stop or retreat. The sources describe relevant technologies and concepts, not a validated crewed cave procedure.

Why explore lunar caves at all?

Pits and possible lava tubes are interesting partly because they may offer environments different from the exposed lunar surface. In its 2022 report on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter-related research, NASA gave exposed-surface temperature extremes of about 260°F during the day and −280°F at night. The study modeled a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis and found more thermally stable conditions in the pit and cave environment.

A modeled, more stable temperature does not show that a cave is safe, habitable, or ready to support a base. The findings help explain why subsurface environments attract scientific and exploration interest, while the existence, accessibility, and practical value of an individual cave would still need to be assessed.

What is established—and what remains unresolved?

NASA’s technical report puts the core challenge plainly: “There are five main issues that any mission for planetary cave exploration must address: access to the cave, in-cave mobility, collection and processing of data for modeling and other scientific objectives, power, and communication.” The statement appears in Technologies Enabling Exploration of Skylights, Lava Tubes and Caves; the available record does not attribute it to a named speaker.

The technology areas are identifiable, but the mission architecture is not settled. The available NASA and JPL material does not establish a selected crewed lunar cave mission, a cave-rated spacesuit, a crewed cave rover, or a complete, validated system joining access, mobility, science, power, communications, and crew safety. Concepts such as a tethered hub and capabilities under development such as autonomous robotics should be understood as pieces of the problem, not as proof that astronauts can already explore lunar caves.
