The iPad mini (A17 Pro) is a plausible laptop substitute for portable, focused work, but its small screen, app-specific limitations, and restrictions on Stage Manager with an external display make it a poor fit for some computer-dependent workflows. Decide by checking your essential apps and typical tasks, not by treating every laptop use as the same.
What kind of laptop work can it replace?
The iPad mini is best considered a replacement for a list of tasks, not for the entire category of laptops. It can handle work that is practical in iPad apps or a browser, provided those apps support the features your workflow needs. Apple’s specifications describe the device and iPadOS features; they do not establish that a particular desktop program, work system, or third-party app is available or works equivalently on iPad.

Before relying on it as your only computer, list the applications and tasks you use regularly. Check that each essential app has an iPad version or a usable browser experience, and verify that it supports the functions you need—not merely that it can open.
Where the iPad mini’s size helps—and where it gets in the way
Apple specifies an 8.3-inch display and a weight of 293 grams for the Wi-Fi model or 297 grams for the Wi-Fi + Cellular model. The compact size is the device’s main advantage when portability matters, but it leaves less room for sustained document editing and viewing multiple things at once than a larger laptop screen.

Think about how often your work involves comparing documents, keeping a reference open beside a draft, or switching among several active tasks. If that is routine, the mini’s screen may feel restrictive even when the apps themselves are suitable. If your work is usually focused on one task at a time, the smaller display may be an acceptable trade-off.
How laptop-like is iPadOS 26 multitasking?
iPadOS 26 adds substantial windowing controls: Apple documents resizable and repositionable app windows, tiling, multiple open windows, a menu bar, and other multitasking features. These make it easier to arrange work than a single-app tablet layout, but windowing does not turn iPad apps into desktop applications or guarantee that every workflow behaves as it would on a laptop.

The practical question is whether the specific apps you use work well together in iPadOS. Confirm your key apps’ capabilities and test the combinations you depend on—for example, whether you can keep the necessary documents and tools available while editing.

What happens when you connect an external monitor?
The iPad mini supports one external display up to 4K at 60 Hz and USB-C DisplayPort output. VGA, HDMI, and DVI connections require separately sold adapters, according to Apple’s technical specifications.

Do not assume that connecting a monitor gives this model a Stage Manager extended desktop. Apple lists the iPad mini (A17 Pro) among the iPads that support Stage Manager, but its separate compatibility list for moving Stage Manager windows to an external display does not include this model. Video output and moving Stage Manager windows to an external display are different capabilities.
Can you type and use a pointer?
Typing-intensive work is possible with an optional keyboard. Apple documents cursor use with a Magic Keyboard or a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad in iPadOS 26. The exact keyboard, case, and pointing-device combination matters, so check compatibility for the accessory model you intend to use rather than assuming every laptop-style setup fits.

For handwriting, annotation, or drawing, the iPad mini supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Those options add input flexibility, but they do not change the screen size or make desktop-only software available.
What Apple’s battery estimate does—and doesn’t—tell you
Apple rates the iPad mini for up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web browsing or video playback, and up to 9 hours of cellular web browsing. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent real-world measurements. Apple says testing used preproduction units in September 2024 under specified conditions and notes that actual battery life varies with settings, use, network, and other factors.

- You are comfortable choosing a suitable keyboard and, if needed, a mouse or trackpad.
A laptop is likely the better fit if
- Your work requires applications or features that are desktop-only or unavailable in the iPad versions you can use.
- You regularly edit documents on a large screen or keep several documents and apps visible side by side.
- Your workflow depends on moving Stage Manager windows to an external display.
