To manage several Steam downloads, use the Download Manager to monitor and reorder current work, Steam > Settings > Downloads to schedule automatic updates or limit speed, and each game’s Properties > Updates panel to set its update policy or priority. These controls let you keep games current, defer updates until launch, or make a particular game update ahead of others.
How do I manage the download queue?
Open the Download Manager from the Downloads link at the bottom of the Steam client, or choose View > Downloads or Library > Downloads. Steam’s Managing Steam Downloads & Updates page describes it as the place to track active and completed downloads, schedule updates, and reorder queued work.

When several updates are waiting, reorder them in the Download Manager to move the most useful one earlier. That changes the current queue; to give a game an ongoing preference over other updates, set its High Priority option in that game’s update settings.
How do I prioritize one game or defer its updates?
In the Library, open the game’s Manage > Properties > Updates panel. Steam provides three automatic update choices:

- Always keep this game updated: lets Steam update the game automatically.
- Only update this game when I launch it: defers the update until you start the game. This is a temporary deferral, not a permanent freeze; launching the game forces its update.
- High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others: tells Steam to update this game ahead of other games.
The same per-game panel also includes a choice about whether other updates may download while you play that game. Steam’s client labels can vary by version, so check the current wording in your settings.
Can I schedule Steam updates overnight?
Yes. Go to Steam > Settings > Downloads and enable the option to limit when Steam automatically updates games, then choose a time range. Steam gives midnight to 8 a.m. as an example: automatic updates occur only during those local hours.

The schedule applies to automatic updates, not every download. You can start an update manually from the Download Manager to override the window, and launching a game forces its update immediately.

In Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose a download bandwidth or speed limit. Steam displays the limit in the Download Manager and in an update dialog shown when you launch a game. The available rate choices depend on whether the client is set to display rates in bytes or bits. Steam’s Setting Client Rates (Limit Download Speed) in Steam page describes its listed rates in kilobytes or megabytes per second, while internet plans are commonly advertised in bits per second.

Keep the units straight when translating a plan speed into a client limit: Mbps means megabits per second, while MB/s means megabytes per second. A cap can limit resource use and may help troubleshoot lag or poor multiplayer performance, but no particular setting guarantees a specific gameplay improvement.
Why do Steam downloads stop when I launch a game?
Steam pauses downloads automatically when a game launches so the game can take priority for network activity. Steam states this in Downloads automatically pause when launching a game.

To let downloads continue while playing, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay under Steam > Settings > Downloads. If downloads affect network performance, use the bandwidth limit as well. This global setting is separate from the per-game choice about allowing or preventing other updates during play.

- In the Library, open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Move Install Folder.
- Choose the destination Library folder.
When installing a new game, select from your existing Library folders. This is useful when you need more room or want installations on a different drive; it does not change the download queue, schedule, or update policy.
