For a U.S. individual, selling Bitcoin or Zcash after it rises generally creates a capital gain. The federal gain is usually the U.S.-dollar value received minus your adjusted basis (normally what you paid, including acquisition fees). The increase in value while you merely hold the coins is generally unrealized and is not itself the taxable event.
The same general property rules apply when you exchange cryptocurrency, spend it, or otherwise dispose of it. Zcash does not have a special federal capital-gains rate; applying these rules to Zcash follows from its being a cryptocurrency, rather than from a Zcash-specific IRS ruling.

When the tax is triggered
A price surge alone normally does not create a federal income-tax bill. Tax is generally recognized when you dispose of the asset. Common dispositions include:
- Selling Bitcoin or Zcash for U.S. dollars or another fiat currency.
- Exchanging one cryptocurrency for another.
- Using cryptocurrency to buy goods or services.
- Any other transaction in which ownership of the asset changes.
If you bought Bitcoin for $20,000 and it is worth $50,000 today, the $30,000 increase is generally unrealized while you continue to hold it. Selling at $50,000 realizes a gain, subject to your actual basis, fees, identification method and other transactions during the year.

The IRS describes the result this way: “When you sell virtual currency, you must recognize any capital gain or loss on the sale, subject to any limitations on the deductibility of capital losses.”
How to calculate a Bitcoin or Zcash gain
For a capital-asset transaction, calculate the result in U.S. dollars:
Capital gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis
Amount realized
The amount realized is what you received for the asset, valued in U.S. dollars on the transaction date. For a cash sale, that is generally the dollar proceeds. For a crypto-to-crypto exchange or a purchase made with crypto, determine the fair-market value of what you received at the time of the disposition and keep the exchange records supporting that value.
Adjusted basis
Basis generally starts with your acquisition cost in U.S. dollars. Acquisition fees and commissions are included in the basis calculation. Your adjusted basis can differ from the original purchase price when you have multiple purchases, fees, transfers or other basis adjustments, so do not rely on an exchange account’s headline “profit” number without checking the underlying lots.
Example
Suppose you buy Bitcoin for $20,000 and pay a $100 acquisition commission. Your starting basis is generally $20,100. If you later sell that lot for $50,000, the resulting gain is generally $29,900 before considering how the sale is classified, any sale-related adjustments under the applicable IRS instructions, and your other gains and losses.

Short-term versus long-term treatment
Your holding period determines whether a gain or loss is short-term or long-term. The holding period starts the day after you acquire the asset and ends on the date you sell or exchange it.

|---|---|---|
| One year or less | Short-term capital gain or loss | Net short-term gains are taxed at graduated ordinary-income rates. |
| More than one year | Long-term capital gain or loss | Net long-term gains generally use the preferential capital-gain rate structure, subject to taxable income and other rules. |
For example, an acquisition on June 1, 2025 generally begins its holding period on June 2, 2025. A disposition on June 1, 2026 is normally one year or less; a disposition on June 2, 2026 is generally more than one year. Keep the exact acquisition and sale dates from your exchange or wallet records rather than estimating from a month or tax year.
Federal long-term capital-gain thresholds for tax year 2025
For 2025, the IRS states that most net long-term capital gain is taxed at no more than 15% for most individuals. The applicable rate depends on taxable income and filing status. The following are federal 2025 thresholds for net long-term capital gain, not a personalized crypto tax calculation.
| Filing status | 0% rate applies up to taxable income of | 15% rate runs up to taxable income of |
|---|---|---|
| Single | $48,350 | $533,400 |
| Married filing separately | $48,350 | $300,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $96,700 | $600,050 |
| Qualifying surviving spouse | $96,700 | $600,050 |
| Head of household | $64,750 | $566,700 |
Amounts above the 15% range can fall into the 20% federal long-term capital-gain rate. Your actual result depends on taxable income, filing status, deductions, all of your capital gains and losses, and any additional taxes that apply to your facts. These figures are for tax year 2025; use the thresholds and instructions for the year of your sale when filing a different year’s return.
The 0%, 15% and 20% figures are not universal “crypto tax rates.” They are rate brackets for net long-term capital gain. A short-term gain is included in the ordinary-income rate system instead, and a separate net investment income tax may affect some taxpayers.
Which Bitcoin or Zcash units were sold?
People often acquire cryptocurrency in several lots at different prices. The gain changes depending on which units are treated as sold.

Specific identification
If you can identify the units sold and substantiate their basis, you may use those particular units. Identification should be made and documented when the sale or transfer occurs, using records such as the asset quantity, acquisition date, acquisition cost, wallet or exchange location and transaction ID. Save the exchange confirmation or other evidence showing which lot was delivered.
FIFO when you cannot identify lots
If you cannot specifically identify the units, the IRS virtual-currency FAQ describes chronological first-in, first-out treatment. FIFO treats the earliest acquired units as sold first. That can produce a different gain and holding period than selecting a newer or higher-cost lot, so incomplete records can materially change the tax result.
Transfers between wallets or exchanges do not automatically establish a sale, but they can make lot tracking harder. Keep transfer dates, quantities, sending and receiving addresses, and account statements so you can connect the same units across platforms.

The IRS expects records sufficient to establish the positions taken on your tax return. For every purchase, transfer and disposition, retain:
- Date and time of the transaction, including the time zone used by the platform.
- Asset and quantity involved, such as BTC or ZEC.
- U.S.-dollar purchase price or value received.
- Acquisition fees and commissions, and records of other transaction fees.
- Wallet addresses, exchange account statements and transaction or blockchain identifiers.
- Which units were selected when you used specific identification.
- Sale proceeds and the date the proceeds were received.
Do not assume that a cash withdrawal is the only relevant record. The taxable disposition can occur when you sell, exchange or spend the asset, even if the dollars remain on an exchange account.
How to report the sale on a federal return
A broker’s information statement is not what creates the reporting obligation. You must report a taxable sale or other disposition whether or not a broker provides Form 1099-DA.

- Collect the transaction history. Export purchase, transfer and sale records from every exchange and wallet involved. Reconcile duplicate entries and identify the lots sold.
- Compute each disposition. Determine the dollar amount realized, adjusted basis, holding period and resulting gain or loss for each transaction.
- Complete Form 8949. Enter each capital-asset disposition and its basis on Form 8949, following the form’s instructions for the information reported to you and transactions not reported to you.
- Transfer totals to Schedule D. Summarize short-term and long-term totals on Schedule D and net them under the capital-gain rules.
- Answer the digital-asset question on Form 1040. A sale or other disposition requires the appropriate “Yes” response and supporting reporting, even when no 1099-DA is issued.
- Keep the supporting files. Retain statements and lot-identification records that substantiate every figure reported.
The IRS summarizes the filing path as follows: “You must report most sales and other capital transactions and calculate capital gain or loss in accordance with IRS forms and instructions, including on Form 8949 … and then summarize capital gains and deductible capital losses on Form 1040, Schedule D.”

Capital losses are netted with capital gains under the same capital-gain rules. Net short-term and long-term amounts are first combined according to the applicable Schedule D calculation. A loss on one cryptocurrency can therefore affect gains on another asset, but the result depends on all of your capital transactions for the year.
If your total net capital loss exceeds your gains, an individual generally may deduct up to $3,000 against other income in the year ($1,500 if married filing separately). Unused losses generally carry forward to later years. Apply the limitation after completing the required forms; do not simply subtract an unlimited crypto loss from wages or other income.
State, local and non-U.S. taxes
The calculations above describe U.S. federal treatment for an individual holding cryptocurrency as a capital asset. State and local rules can differ in rates, conformity to federal rules, filing thresholds and treatment of losses. A state may also impose income tax even when your federal long-term rate is 0%.
If you are not a U.S. resident, or if you changed tax residence during the year, the relevant country may classify cryptocurrency and determine basis, reporting and timing differently. The available federal guidance does not answer those jurisdiction-specific questions. Check the tax authority for the place where you were resident and where the transaction occurred, or obtain advice from a professional familiar with both cryptocurrency records and that jurisdiction.
Planning before you sell after a surge
Check the exact holding period
One extra day can change a disposition from short-term to long-term. Verify the acquisition date for the specific units you intend to sell, not merely the date you first bought any cryptocurrency.

Review lots and identification options
Compare the basis and holding period of available lots. If specific identification is permitted by your records and platform procedures, document the selected units before executing the sale. Otherwise, be prepared for FIFO treatment.
Estimate the whole-year result
Include gains and losses from every digital asset and other capital asset. A sale that looks like a $30,000 gain in isolation may produce a different net amount after other dispositions, deductions and filing-status thresholds are considered.
Set aside cash for the liability
Tax is based on the realized result, not on whether you leave the sale proceeds in dollars or reinvest them. Reserve enough cash for the expected federal and applicable state or local liability instead of assuming the market will continue rising.
Use current-year guidance
Tax forms, information-reporting rules and rate thresholds can change. The 2025 figures shown here apply to tax year 2025; use the IRS forms and instructions for the year in which you disposed of the Bitcoin or Zcash.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for a bank withdrawal. The sale or exchange can be the disposition even when proceeds stay on an exchange.
- Treating the entire sale proceeds as profit. Subtract adjusted basis; the amount received is not automatically the gain.
- Ignoring acquisition fees. Fees and commissions can be part of basis, so preserve the purchase confirmation.
- Mixing lots without a method. Use documented specific identification when available; otherwise apply the IRS-described FIFO approach.
- Assuming all gains receive long-term rates. The holding period is measured for the actual units sold and begins the day after acquisition.
- Reporting only what appears on a form. The obligation to report does not depend on receiving Form 1099-DA.
- Applying federal thresholds to every tax. State, local, foreign and possible additional federal taxes require separate analysis.
What this means specifically for Zcash
For a U.S. individual holding Zcash as a capital asset, a sale after appreciation is generally analyzed with the same proceeds-minus-adjusted-basis framework used for Bitcoin. That conclusion follows from the IRS treatment of digital assets as property and from Zcash being a cryptocurrency; it is not based on a Zcash-specific IRS rate or ruling. Use the Zcash transaction date, quantity, dollar value, fees and lot records in the same way you would for Bitcoin.
