A supplement quality seal means a product or manufacturing operation met the criteria of a named program. It does not, by itself, show that the supplement works, is right for you, or is risk-free. To understand a seal, identify the exact mark, check the certifier’s current listing and criteria, and see whether the program evaluated the product, the manufacturing site, or both.
What does a supplement quality seal tell you?
It tells you that a named certifier evaluated something against that program’s stated requirements. The important question is what was evaluated: a finished product, its label and contents, a manufacturing facility, or some combination. A logo alone does not reveal the full scope. The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) notes that ConsumerLab, NSF, and USP use different approaches to testing and reporting; read its guidance on how to evaluate dietary supplements.

Quality checks can address identity, strength, composition, label accuracy, specified contaminants, or manufacturing practices. The criteria and oversight vary by program. A quality seal is not evidence of clinical benefit, nor does it establish that a product is suitable for every person.

Testing and certification are related, but not identical
Testing is an activity: a sample is examined using specified methods. Certification is a program decision that a product, facility, or process meets defined requirements. Depending on the program, certification can involve testing plus document review, facility audits, and continuing oversight. NSF explains that testing can verify the identity, purity, quality, strength, and composition of ingredients and finished products in its dietary supplements and functional foods FAQ.

- IDENTIFY KEY VITAMINS & MINERALS YOU MAY NOT BE PROPERLY ABSORBING. When your body isn’t properly absorbing the key vitamins and minerals from your diet, nutrient imbalances can occur. If they’re left unchecked, symptoms like low energy, brittle nails, dry skin, hair shedding, and fatigue can develop. This test identifies the specific nutrients that may need diet adjustments to support better absorption.
- TESTS 112 VITAMINS, MINERALS & TRACE ELEMENTS. Our nutrition test analyzes your hair sample’s response across Vitamins A, B-Complex, C, D, E, K, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Selenium, Trace Minerals, Essential Amino Acids, plus Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
- HOW OUR TESTING WORKS. 1) Register your test online or in the 5Strands app. 2) Collect 10 to 15 strands of hair. 3) Mail your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid envelope. Once the lab receives it, your results are delivered to your email and mobile dashboard within 4 days. No blood draw, no office visits, or extra fees.
- CLEAR ANSWERS TO MAKE TARGETED DIET ADJUSTMENTS. Your hair analysis report organizes each nutrient into 4 response levels so you know which vitamins or minerals your body may have the most trouble absorbing. Use your results to adjust food choices and supplements to support better absorption and improve energy levels, skin hydration, hair and nail strength, and mental clarity.
- INDEPENDENTLY VALIDATED & DOUBLE-SCAN LAB PROCESS. Backed by third-party research and analyzed twice in a certified U.S. lab for accuracy, 5Strands is trusted by more than 345,000 customers and pets to uncover nutritional imbalances affecting daily performance, skin and hair health, and overall wellbeing.
One test of one sample does not necessarily establish that every batch is identical or that a certification remains current. Look for the certifier’s explanation of sampling, repeat checks, audits, and listing status rather than treating “third-party tested” as a uniform standard.
Product certification versus a certified manufacturing facility
A product-level mark and a good manufacturing practices (GMP) facility certification answer different questions. NSF distinguishes NSF/ANSI 173, a product certification standard involving technical review and product and contaminant testing, from NSF/ANSI 455, which certifies manufacturing quality systems and processes and includes annual inspections or audits. The details are in NSF’s certification FAQ.

A facility audit can provide information about the systems used to make products, but it should not be read as independent confirmation of the ingredients and label claims of every item made there. Check whether the exact product itself is certified, and what the applicable mark covers.
What the major supplement seals say they cover
NSF marks
NSF says its marks indicate evaluation against a defined certification standard, with scope depending on the particular program. Depending on the mark, checks may cover label and claim accuracy, certain contaminants or undeclared substances, GMP practices, and continuing compliance. NSF Certified for Sport is intended for athletes concerned about ingredient contents and quality as well as banned substances. These are program-specific checks, not a general promise of effectiveness or safety. See NSF’s explanation of dietary supplement certification.

- IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
- TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
- HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
- EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
USP Verified
The USP Verified program says it tests products against identity and quality specifications and checks whether they contain the ingredients and strengths declared on the label. It also includes an audit of the manufacturing facility against specified USP and federal requirements. USP awards its Verified Mark to products that meet the program’s testing and evaluation criteria, as described in its USP Verification Services FAQ. This applies to the specific USP Verified Mark; other wording that mentions USP should not be assumed to mean a product has been verified.
ConsumerLab Quality Certification
ConsumerLab describes its Quality Certification Program as voluntary: manufacturers and distributors may request product testing, and products approved through the program may bear its CL Seal. That description concerns this certification program; it does not establish that every ConsumerLab review or test begins in the same way. See ConsumerLab’s Quality Certification Program.

Informed Choice
Informed Choice describes itself as a supplement testing and quality-assurance program. It says LGC tests three samples across at least three production runs or batches in an accredited laboratory before certification. That is Informed Choice’s stated process, not a standard that can be assumed for other seals. See Informed Choice.

- Identify the exact mark. Read the packaging carefully: a product mark, a sport-specific mark, a facility certification, and a generic “third-party tested” statement are not interchangeable.
- Find the certifier’s current product listing. Search for the exact product and, where shown, its formulation or variant. A facility listing alone does not establish product-level certification.
- Read the criteria behind that mark. Check whether the program evaluates label identity and strength, specified contaminants, manufacturing practices, or sport-prohibited substances.
- Check the oversight process. Look for how samples are selected, whether testing recurs, and whether audits or other continuing checks are part of the program.
- Keep the conclusion narrow. Treat the seal as evidence only for the checks its program describes; assess health claims and personal suitability separately.
Program pages and product listings can change. The certifier pages cited here do not expose publication dates and were accessed on October 4, 2026, so confirm current criteria and status when evaluating a product.
