What to Do When a Supplement’s Quality Claims Are Unclear or Unverifiable

When a supplement’s quality claims are vague, check the exact product, ask what was tested and verify any certification before relying on it.

If a supplement company cannot explain what “tested,” “pure,” “standardized” or “GMP” means for its product, treat the claim as unverified. Check the exact label and any current, product-specific certification; ask what was tested and how; and pause before using the product if important answers remain vague. A label or quality seal can help you assess a product, but neither proves that every bottle matches its claims or that the supplement is safe or effective.

Why a supplement’s claims need checking

In the United States, the FDA generally does not approve dietary supplements or their labels before they are sold, and it does not test supplements before they reach consumers. Manufacturers and distributors are initially responsible for ensuring their products comply with the law. FDA says firms generally do not have to submit the evidence they rely on to substantiate safety, although advance safety notifications apply to certain new dietary ingredients.

FDA rules require manufacturers to follow current good manufacturing practices intended to help ensure a supplement’s identity, purity, quality, strength and composition. That requirement is not the same as FDA testing or approval of a particular product. FDA’s Questions and Answers on Dietary Supplements explains the agency’s role and what labels must include.

Start with the exact product and label

Before contacting the company, note the complete product name and the manufacturer, packer or distributor identified on the label. Record the ingredient names and amounts, serving size, lot or batch number if shown, and the exact wording of any quality claim. Photograph the label and packaging, then compare them with the company’s product page. Save the page or its URL in case the wording changes.

5Strands Vitamin & Mineral Imbalance Test, 150 Items Tested
  • IDENTIFY KEY VITAMINS & MINERALS YOU MAY NOT BE PROPERLY ABSORBING. When your body isn’t properly absorbing the key vitamins and minerals from your diet, nutrient imbalances can occur. If they’re left unchecked, symptoms like low energy, brittle nails, dry skin, hair shedding, and fatigue can develop. This test identifies the specific nutrients that may need diet adjustments to support better absorption.
  • TESTS 112 VITAMINS, MINERALS & TRACE ELEMENTS. Our nutrition test analyzes your hair sample’s response across Vitamins A, B-Complex, C, D, E, K, Calcium, Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, Selenium, Trace Minerals, Essential Amino Acids, plus Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
  • HOW OUR TESTING WORKS. 1) Register your test online or in the 5Strands app. 2) Collect 10 to 15 strands of hair. 3) Mail your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid envelope. Once the lab receives it, your results are delivered to your email and mobile dashboard within 4 days. No blood draw, no office visits, or extra fees.
  • CLEAR ANSWERS TO MAKE TARGETED DIET ADJUSTMENTS. Your hair analysis report organizes each nutrient into 4 response levels so you know which vitamins or minerals your body may have the most trouble absorbing. Use your results to adjust food choices and supplements to support better absorption and improve energy levels, skin hydration, hair and nail strength, and mental clarity.
  • INDEPENDENTLY VALIDATED & DOUBLE-SCAN LAB PROCESS. Backed by third-party research and analyzed twice in a certified U.S. lab for accuracy, 5Strands is trusted by more than 345,000 customers and pets to uncover nutritional imbalances affecting daily performance, skin and hair health, and overall wellbeing.

The label is useful for what it declares, not independent proof that the bottle contains those ingredients in those amounts. A U.S. supplement label should identify the product as a dietary supplement and include a Supplement Facts panel, other ingredients, net quantity, and the responsible firm’s name and place of business. The panel generally lists serving size, servings per container, dietary ingredients and amounts per serving. For a proprietary blend, the blend’s total amount is listed, but the individual amounts of ingredients within it do not have to be disclosed. The label must also provide a domestic address or phone number for serious adverse-event reports.

Work out what the quality claim actually means

Words such as “tested,” “pure,” “standardized,” “clinically studied” and “GMP” do not all mean the same thing. Ask the company to define the claim and explain what evidence supports it. In particular, “standardization” has no definition in U.S. law, so the word alone does not establish quality or consistency.

For a testing claim, useful specifics include the product or batch tested, the substance or contaminant measured, the test method, who performed the test, and the acceptance criteria. Ask whether the claim refers to a finished product, an ingredient, or the facility where the product is made. A general statement about manufacturing practices does not by itself show that the finished bottle was tested for identity or contaminants.

Do not treat a testimonial, promotional chart or study of an ingredient as proof that the particular product has the claimed quality or benefit. Quality evidence and evidence that a supplement works are separate questions.

  • 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.

Check certification by its scope, not just its logo

Independent certification is voluntary, and programs differ in what they assess. NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies ConsumerLab, NSF and USP among organizations that offer quality testing, while cautioning that a seal does not guarantee that a supplement is safe or effective. Search the certifier’s current directory for the exact product and check its listing status rather than relying on a logo in an advertisement.

NSF describes several distinct programs in its consumer FAQ on supplement certification. NSF/ANSI 455 concerns manufacturing-process and GMP certification, including annual inspections or audits. NSF/ANSI 173 is product certification involving technical review, product testing and contaminant testing. NSF 306, or Certified for Sport, screens for 290+ banned substances and requires NSF/ANSI 173 eligibility. NSF says its testing may cover label composition, heavy metals, microorganisms, mycotoxins and pesticides. These programs do not provide interchangeable evidence: a facility audit is not the same as testing a particular finished product.

USP Verified materials describe facility audits, product testing and ongoing off-the-shelf checks. Verify current scope and product participation through USP’s official Verified resources before relying on a specific claim. For any seal, check what is assessed, whether the exact product is included, whether checks recur, and whether the current listing is active. No single certification ranking establishes which product is best for every purpose.

Questions to ask the manufacturer

NIH Office of Dietary Supplements recommends asking what information supports the product’s claims, whether the firm has safety or efficacy testing on the ingredients, whether it follows GMP and uses quality control to check identity and contamination, and whether it has received adverse-event reports. You can make those questions more useful by asking for details:

  • Easy to use and reliable results
  • Suitable for home use
  • Accuracy rate up to 99.5%
  • Reliable screening for vitamin D deficiency
  • Quick results within 15 minutes, no need to send to the laboratory
  • What does each quality claim on this product mean?
  • Was the finished product tested, or only an ingredient or manufacturing facility?
  • Which batch was tested, and what identity, strength or contaminant checks were performed?
  • Who performed the testing, which methods were used, and what criteria counted as a passing result?
  • Does an independent certifier list this exact product, and what does its certification cover?
  • What safety or efficacy evidence supports the product’s health-benefit claims, and has the firm received adverse-event reports?

These follow-up details help you judge the answer; they do not mean a manufacturer must provide a particular public certificate format. FDA also recommends contacting the manufacturer when label information is insufficient. If the company provides only broad assurances without explaining the claim’s scope, you have not verified it.

Decide whether to pause, seek advice or test a sample

If a material claim remains unsupported or the company will not say what its testing covers, do not rely on that claim. Pause before buying or taking the product and discuss it with a doctor, pharmacist or dietitian, particularly if you take medication, manage a health condition, are preparing for surgery, or are pregnant or considering pregnancy. Supplements can have risks and interact with medicines; FDA recommends consulting a health professional about their use.

If your concern is whether a particular product contains what it declares, FDA says consumers may contact the manufacturer or a commercial laboratory for analysis. A lab result applies to the sample and the substances tested; it does not automatically establish the contents of every bottle or answer every quality question. The FDA’s consumer guidance on dietary supplements covers label information and questions to consider.

Know what the FDA disclaimer does—and does not—mean

Some structure/function and related claims must carry a disclaimer that the statement has not been evaluated by FDA. That wording is not FDA approval, and it does not independently validate the claim. Companies must have substantiation that covered claims are truthful and not misleading, but the claims do not require FDA evaluation before appearing on a label. Claims to treat, prevent or cure disease can cause a product marketed as a supplement to meet the legal definition of a drug.

Report a suspected reaction or product problem

If you suspect a harmful reaction, seek medical advice promptly. Report the event or an apparent product defect—such as a foreign object or another quality problem—through FDA’s Safety Reporting Portal. Keep the product packaging and label details available when you make a report, including the lot number if one is shown.
