1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMost data centers sound like a steady mechanical hum, whir or tonal drone—not a constant jet-like roar. Cooling equipment runs to carry heat away from servers, while backup generators make a louder, more distinct sound only when they are tested or needed. What someone hears depends on where they are, the equipment and its operating state, and how the site is designed.
Why data centers make noise
Servers produce heat, and that heat has to be moved out of the computing space. Fans and air-handling units circulate air; chillers, cooling towers and pumps help transfer or reject heat. Their moving parts and airflow create the persistent mechanical sound commonly associated with a data center. Electrical and power equipment can add lower-frequency sound. Equipment type, fan speed, cooling demand, layout and acoustic treatment all affect the result. The Wichita Metropolitan Area Planning Department’s March 2026 planning white paper and UNSW’s September 2026 explainer describe these sources and controls.

Cooling continues whenever needed, including at night; it is not simply switched off when staff leave. Generator noise is different: backup generators run during power interruptions and may be operated for maintenance checks. Microsoft says its own generator testing and maintenance runs total much less than 24 hours per year and are typically scheduled during daytime. That is Microsoft’s description of its facilities, not a rule for every operator. Microsoft Local’s FAQ says its generator units use sound-attenuating housings and may be shielded.
What does a data center sound like?
Common descriptions include a steady hum, low drone, whir or tonal whine. Fans and airflow may create a broad rushing sound, while mechanical or electrical equipment can produce a more distinct tone. Low- and high-frequency tones are both possible, and the exact mix varies among facilities and operating conditions. An indoor server hall may sound different from the outdoor cooling plant; a generator test will sound different from ordinary cooling.

Some sound can be below the range of typical human hearing. Microsoft describes its facilities as capable of generating low-frequency sound, including frequencies below 20 Hz, but says that its low-frequency sound is generally very low and typically imperceptible under normal conditions. That is the operator’s account, not an independent finding about every data center.
How to interpret data-center noise figures
A decibel figure is useful only with its measurement location and context. Levels beside equipment cannot be treated as levels at a property boundary or inside a nearby home.

| Reported figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Approaching 100 dBA | Equipment source, including cooling systems, server halls and backup generators, in the Wichita planning white paper. | A source-level figure, not a typical reading at a residence or property line. Berkley Group, March 19, 2026. |
| Above 85 dBA | Air-handling units and backup generators within a facility, according to UNSW. | An inside-facility description; it does not establish an exterior or residential level. UNSW, September 2026. |
| 55–85 dBA or higher | A reported range for external data-center noise in Indiana University’s fact sheet, which summarizes varied sources. | A secondary summary, not a standard or a universal level for every site. Indiana University Environmental Resilience Institute fact sheet, accessed 2026. |
These figures do not substitute for a measurement at a particular location. A sound reading also depends on distance, background noise, barriers, weather, time of day and whether equipment is in ordinary cooling mode or running a generator.

- Location: distinguish the equipment source, facility interior, property line and nearby home.
- Character: note whether the sound is broad airflow or fan noise, or a tonal or low-frequency hum or whine.
- Operating state: record whether the site is under ordinary cooling demand, using a different cooling mode, testing generators or responding to an outage.
- Measurement conditions: consider time, distance, background sound, weather and intervening barriers.
- Applicable rule: check the local jurisdiction, land use, measurement weighting and any special treatment of tonal or low-frequency sound.
A consumer sound meter can help document informal observations, but it cannot establish regulatory compliance. For a consequential complaint or compliance question, a competent independent acoustic assessment is more appropriate.
How operators reduce noise, and why rules differ
Noise control can start with quieter cooling equipment and site layout, then add measures such as acoustic louvres, enclosures, barriers, silencers and greater distance from nearby properties. UNSW describes these approaches, while the Wichita planning white paper discusses enforceable high- and low-frequency standards, independent acoustic studies before and after construction, setbacks, generator-maintenance noise assessment and acoustic treatment for cooling systems. Local requirements vary with jurisdiction and land use.

For context, UNSW describes a typical Australian residential nighttime range of 35–40 dBA and says independent assessments are part of environmental approval. This is an Australian regulatory context, not a worldwide limit. A facility’s compliance can only be judged against the rules and measurement methods that apply at its location.

What is known about health effects?
UNSW says data-center-specific research identifying health effects is not yet available, while distinguishing that evidence gap from broader research on environmental noise. The Wichita report says potential effects of infrasound have not been thoroughly studied or evaluated. These statements do not prove that every facility is harmless, and they do not establish that a particular symptom was caused by a data center. A site-specific concern is best assessed with measurements and the applicable local standards rather than by applying source-level figures to a nearby home.
