Check the exact jar’s ingredient list and allergen statement. If you need to avoid gluten, “no wheat listed” is not enough—look for a clear gluten-free claim or relevant certification, and confirm unclear ingredients with the manufacturer.
What to check on a gochujang label
- Read the full ingredient list. Look for wheat, barley, rye, malt or barley malt, and sauces or seasonings that may contain gluten-containing grains, such as some soy sauces.
- Read the allergen declaration too. It can help identify wheat, but it is not a complete gluten screen. The US allergen rule described by the Celiac Disease Foundation identifies wheat as an allergen; barley and rye are not among the wheat allergens covered by that rule. See the Foundation’s labeling guidance.
- Check for an explicit gluten-free claim or certification if avoiding gluten. Beyond Celiac advises checking ingredients or looking for a certified gluten-free symbol because gochujang recipes differ. If an ingredient is unclear, ask the manufacturer about the specific product and market.
- Match the label to the jar you are buying. Formulations and packaging can vary by recipe, market, size, and batch. Recheck the package rather than relying on a product name or an older online listing.
Wheat-free and gluten-free are not the same
Wheat is one source of gluten, but barley and rye also contain gluten. Barley malt can therefore make a product unsuitable for someone avoiding gluten even when wheat is absent. A wheat allergen statement alone does not answer whether a food is gluten-free.

In the United States, the Celiac Disease Foundation’s 2024 guidance says products labeled “gluten-free” must contain less than 20 ppm gluten. This is a US labeling point, not a universal international rule; the rules and label terms that apply can differ elsewhere. Read the package sold in your market.
Ingredients that can be confusing
Barley malt and malt
Check for barley malt or malt when screening for gluten. The word “malt” may not spell out the grain, so ask the manufacturer if the source is unclear rather than assuming it is safe.
#1 Best Overall
- TWO FERMENTED PASTES, TWO DIFFERENT JOBS - Gochujang and Ssamjang: Gochujang is the chili paste you cook with: tteokbokki, bibimbap, marinades, stews. Ssamjang is the doenjang-based dip that stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Korean kitchens keep both because neither substitutes for the other. Available singly, in twin packs and as a set.
- REDUCED SUGAR, NO WHEAT FLOUR - Allulose and Meju: Both pastes are sweetened with liquid allulose rather than corn syrup, and both are built on traditionally fermented Korean meju soybean instead of wheat or glutinous rice flour used as thickeners. That is what keeps the body thick and the ingredient list short at the same time.
- SINCE 1965, THIRD-GENERATION KOREAN MAKER - HACCP Certified: It began with a grandmother in Sindangdong, Seoul in 1965 and is run today by the third generation of the same family, which holds a Korean patent for its reduced-sugar fermented paste process. Made in a HACCP-certified facility with Korean-sourced raw materials. No MSG added, no artificial preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors.
- CERTIFICATIONS: The ssamjang carries official Traditional Korean Food certification from Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, certification number 1065. The gochujang is certified by Sugarwise, the international sugar-claims authority. Both are registered marks rather than marketing phrases.
- 8.81 oz (250g) JARS - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids sealed to protect the ferment. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.
Glutinous rice
“Glutinous” describes the sticky texture of this rice; it does not mean the rice contains gluten. Beyond Celiac identifies glutinous rice as safe for people with celiac disease.
Soy sauce and other grain-containing seasonings
Some soy sauces and seasonings are made with gluten-containing grains. Check the ingredients in the gochujang itself, including any named sauces or fermented ingredients, and verify ambiguous items with the maker.
Examples labeled gluten-free
These examples show that gochujang labeled gluten-free is available; they are not a ranking or an independent safety verification. Confirm that the current package in your market matches the relevant product information.

If you have a wheat allergy, check the wheat ingredients and allergen declaration, and follow the advice you have received from your clinician. If you have celiac disease or avoid gluten for another reason, also screen for barley, rye, malt, and grain-containing sauces; a gluten-free claim or certification may provide a more relevant label signal. Allergy and gluten-avoidance needs are not interchangeable.

- TWO THAT ACTUALLY GO TOGETHER - Gochujang and Ssamjang: This bundle pairs the cooking paste plus the table dip, which is the combination most people end up buying separately anyway. Gochujang goes in the pan. Ssamjang stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Between them you can cook a Korean dinner and set the table for it.
- REDUCED SUGAR ACROSS BOTH - Allulose, Not Corn Syrup: Regular Korean sauces lean on corn syrup and rice syrup for balance. Both items here are sweetened with liquid allulose instead, a low-calorie sweetener found naturally in figs and raisins. Same sweet-heat character, a fraction of the sugar load, on both sides of the bundle.
- WHERE THEY GO: Tteokbokki, bibimbap, Korean BBQ, lettuce wraps, ramen, rice bowls, fried rice, tacos, eggs, pizza, fries, dumplings, wings, tofu and roasted vegetables. Between the two you cover cooking and finishing, which is the gap most single-jar buyers run into a week after opening the first one.
- BUNDLE OF TWO - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids and caps sealed. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.
