Sober is VinegarHQ’s experimental, unofficial way to run Roblox Player on Linux. Instead of running the Windows client through Wine, Sober creates what its developers call a specialized runtime for Roblox’s Android version and bridges it to Linux. It is not Roblox Studio, and the project does not publicly document enough implementation detail to describe its lower-level internals more precisely.
How Sober runs Roblox without Wine
Sober’s developers describe it as a bridge between Linux and the Android version of Roblox: the application crafts a “specialized runtime” for that Android client. The project distinguishes this approach from Wine, a conventional Android emulator, and a virtual machine, but does not publish a detailed account of the runtime’s internal architecture. See the Sober FAQ and project homepage for the project’s description.

In practical terms, Sober is a Linux application for Roblox Player that uses the Android version of Roblox rather than attempting to run the Windows client. That explains the “without Wine” part, but it does not mean the method is an official Roblox Linux release.

- Roblox Player on Linux: Sober is intended to let users play Roblox on supported Linux systems.
- Not Roblox Studio: The project’s FAQ directs Studio users to Vinegar, a separate tool from VinegarHQ. See the VinegarHQ homepage.
- Unofficial and experimental: Sober says it is not affiliated with Roblox, is closed source, and may have bugs, instability, or be discontinued. Roblox may also prevent Sober clients from accessing its services at any time. The project does not establish a guarantee about account moderation outcomes.
These caveats matter if you need a supported or dependable Roblox setup. The project explicitly describes Sober as experimental rather than production-grade; compatibility and continued access are not guaranteed by Roblox or by the nature of the approach.

System requirements
The current Sober installation guide lists these requirements and recommendations:
| Component | Documented requirement or recommendation |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Linux kernel 5.11 or newer |
| Processor architecture | x86-64/AMD64; ARM processors are unsupported in the documented release |
| Graphics | Graphics hardware capable of OpenGL ES 3.0 is the listed minimum |
| Recommended for a smoother experience | SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1 |
The guide says the Roblox x86-64 APK requires SSE4.2. Sober can emulate SSE4.2 on processors that support only SSE4.1, but performance will not be optimal. Flathub also lists the package architecture as x86_64, so an ARM system does not meet the documented release’s platform requirements; see the Flathub listing.

The standard installation route is Flatpak from Flathub. If Flatpak is not installed on your distribution, first follow that distribution’s Flatpak setup instructions; then install the Sober app ID org.vinegarhq.Sober from Flathub.
- Install Sober from Flathub. Use your software center’s Flathub source, if configured, or the Flatpak app ID
org.vinegarhq.Sober. The project’s installation page documents the process. - Open Sober. On first launch, it prompts you to install Roblox. Automatic installation is selected by default and is the recommended option for most users.
- Use manual installation only if needed. Sober requests an APK application bundle. The project advises using a trustworthy source. If the required files were downloaded as separate split APKs, select both the base APK and the x86_64 split APK.
Follow the installation page for the current package and first-run flow, since distribution-specific Flatpak setup and app-store interfaces can differ.
Current version and compatibility can change
When Flathub was checked on October 5, 2026, its listing showed Sober version 1.8.0 and Roblox build 2.741.1061. The release notes cited fixes for performance issues and freezes, a rendering bug affecting Nullscape and other titles on certain GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes. These are release-specific details, not a promise that every GPU or game will work correctly. Check the live Flathub listing for the latest version and notes.
