Start by identifying where the failure happens: Sober will not open, Roblox rejects sign-in, a game will not join, or graphics fail after launch. Each points to a different fix. Sober is an unofficial, experimental Linux runtime—not a Roblox-supported client—and its developers warn that bugs and instability are possible (Sober project website).
First, identify the failure and collect logs
Note what happens immediately before the problem: no Sober window, a black screen, a crash, a sign-in rejection, Error 318, a freeze after selecting an experience, or a Roblox website link that does nothing. These symptoms belong to different troubleshooting paths.

Check Linux compatibility and update Sober
Before resetting app data, confirm that the system meets the requirements listed in VinegarHQ’s Sober troubleshooting documentation and its installation requirements.
- Linux kernel 5.11 or newer
- x86-64/AMD64 architecture
- SSE4.1 support
- OpenGL ES 3.0 capability
SSE4.2 and Vulkan 1.1 are recommended for a smoother experience. Update Sober and its Flatpak runtimes through your usual Flatpak update process. Check the installed release notes as well: Flathub’s listing for Sober reports that version 1.8.0 fixed freezes, a rendering bug on certain GPUs, and some Vulkan crashes.
If you use NVIDIA graphics
For the documented dedicated-GPU path, the NVIDIA driver on the host and the NVIDIA Flatpak extension need to match. VinegarHQ says a mismatch can stop Sober from using the dedicated GPU and suggests updating Flatpak as one remedy. The documentation also gives an environment override for forcing dedicated-GPU offload in that specific situation; consult its current troubleshooting instructions rather than applying an override to unrelated failures.

If a hybrid-GPU system reports a Vulkan surface error
For the specific error vkGetPhysicalDeviceSurfacePresentModesKHR failed, VinegarHQ suggests running a Vulkan application such as vkcube to wake the discrete GPU before starting Sober. This is a targeted workaround for that hybrid-graphics scenario, not a general fix for every launch or rendering problem.
Fix Vulkan initialization problems
If Sober reports that the graphics card does not support Vulkan, or Vulkan initialization fails, do not assume the hardware is unusable. The Sober FAQ says the client should fall back to OpenGL when Vulkan is unavailable. If automatic fallback does not work, try the OpenGL setting.
- Open Sober’s settings, or run
flatpak run org.vinegarhq.Sober config. - Enable the OpenGL fallback. The configuration key is
use_opengl; set it totruein~/.var/app/org.vinegarhq.Sober/config/sober/config.jsonif editing the file directly. - Save the setting and launch Sober again.
Prefer the settings interface or the config command for routine changes. If you edit the JSON file manually, preserve valid JSON: the documentation warns that malformed configuration can prevent Sober from launching. The fallback is appropriate for Vulkan availability or initialization problems; it is not a universal cure for black screens, game-specific crashes, or freezes.

Reduce texture memory pressure
An out-of-video-memory crash can happen when high-quality textures exceed available video memory. VinegarHQ notes that this can affect some NVIDIA and older Intel integrated graphics configurations. Sober normally applies a texture-quality fallback automatically. If that does not happen, its troubleshooting guide documents overrides in the fflags section of the configuration:

Lower texture quality can trade visual detail for memory headroom, but VinegarHQ cautions that even the override “will not guarantee that all games will be playable.” The project discourages value 0, so treat it only as last-resort guidance rather than a recommended setting.
Separate account sign-in from game-join errors
Roblox rejects your credentials or sign-in fails
The reviewed Sober troubleshooting page and FAQ do not provide a credential-login repair procedure. First check whether you can sign in to Roblox elsewhere. If the problem follows your account, use Roblox Support for account-level help. Do not assume that changing DNS, disabling a VPN, clearing browser cookies, or resetting Sober data is an official Sober fix; those steps are not documented as remedies for account sign-in failures.

A game fails to join with Error 318
VinegarHQ identifies Error 318 as an Android Remote Attestation (ARA) limitation for experiences that require the check. Sober cannot satisfy this real-device integrity check, and the maintainers say it cannot be fixed or bypassed in Sober. Contact the experience developer through its official channels. The games listed in the troubleshooting page as affected had ARA disabled as of August 20, 2026, but developers can enable it again; do not treat that list as a current guarantee.

If a Roblox website or private-server link does nothing, that is a link-dispatch problem, not necessarily a password or sign-in failure. Sober’s troubleshooting guide points to Linux OpenURI portal setup and association of the roblox-player URL scheme with Sober.

Triage freezes, black screens, and rendering artifacts
Once Sober opens but a game renders incorrectly or freezes, record the details before changing several settings at once. Include the GPU model, driver and Mesa versions, Flatpak runtime, Sober version, desktop session, renderer, exact experience, and relevant log excerpt. Then check whether your installed Sober release includes a fix for your symptom.
A renderer switch or cache clear may be worth investigating when the symptom points to that component, but neither is a universal solution. One user report from May 2026 described a game-join freeze that persisted after switching to OpenGL and clearing the cache; that individual report does not establish a general defect or a fix for other users. If the problem affects only one experience, check its developer’s official status or support channels rather than assuming the whole Sober installation is broken.

If the documented steps do not resolve the problem, VinegarHQ directs users to its Discord or GitHub issue tracker for unresolved cases. Include enough detail for others to distinguish a system, graphics, sign-in, or experience-side failure:
