Depending on the program, they may also research a real-world problem, present a solution, coordinate with teammates, and explain their decisions. These are opportunities to build experience—not guaranteed outcomes, and the skills emphasized vary by competition.
Technical skills: applying STEM to a working robot
Students use science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to turn a challenge into a robot that can perform tasks. That can involve choosing a design, constructing a machine, writing code, and testing how the robot behaves. FIRST describes its programs as hands-on STEM learning, while VEX presents competition as a way to engage students in practical STEM experiences.

The useful learning is in the cycle, not just the finished machine: a robot may need changes after a test reveals that a mechanism, program, or strategy does not work as intended. Students get practice connecting technical choices to what happens on the field or during a mission.

Problem-solving and iteration
A competition task gives a team goals and constraints to interpret. Students decide what the robot should do, develop an approach, test it against the challenge, and revise the design or strategy when results fall short. FIRST LEGO League Challenge, for example, includes robot-game and robot-design categories and frames the work around solving complex challenges.

This is a practical form of problem-solving: the team has to make decisions with limited time, resources, and opportunities to test. Competition formats differ, so the particular problems students solve depend on the season’s tasks and rules.
Teamwork, communication, and time management
Teams must divide work, coordinate progress, and communicate about design and strategy. VEX identifies communication, collaboration, and time management among the skills associated with its competitions. Its Teamwork Challenge pairs two teams to work together to maximize their score, making coordination part of the match itself.

In other formats, collaboration may happen mainly within a team as students prepare a robot or explain their design to judges. The amount and kind of teamwork therefore depend on the event structure, not simply on the fact that robots compete.
Research and presenting ideas
Some competitions ask students to do more than build and operate a robot. FIRST LEGO League Challenge includes research and project work alongside the robot game and robot design. Students may investigate a real-world problem, develop an idea, and present their thinking as part of the program.

What claims about learning can—and cannot—show
Program descriptions establish the activities students are asked to do and the skills organizers aim to develop. On their own, they do not prove that competition participation causes a specific improvement or that every student gains proficiency in every area. It is more accurate to say students can practice technical, problem-solving, communication, or research skills than to promise a particular result.
VEX’s competition page displays a claim that 95% of participants report increased interest in STEM areas and STEM-related careers. The page information available here does not establish the claim’s publication year or provide the study details needed to assess it, so it should not be treated as independent proof of skill gains.
