To keep a Linux laptop running when you close its lid, use your desktop’s lid-close power setting if it provides one. On systems managed by systemd-logind, the system-wide setting is HandleLidSwitch=ignore. If you use a dock or multiple displays, check HandleLidSwitchDocked as well. Desktop power management and distribution-specific configuration can affect what happens, so the logind setting is not a universal guarantee.
What happens when you close the lid?
On systemd-logind systems, the documented default for HandleLidSwitch is suspend. The systemd logind.conf manual describes this setting as the action logind takes for a lid-switch event. Setting it to ignore tells logind not to handle that event; it does not itself configure every desktop power manager or guarantee that no other component will suspend the laptop.

Available actions documented by systemd include ignore, poweroff, reboot, halt, kexec, suspend, hibernate, hybrid-sleep and lock. These are systemd documentation values and defaults; a distribution may add configuration overrides or desktop integration that changes observed behavior.
Change the systemd-logind lid setting
The general configuration shape is:

Before editing, check your distribution’s current systemd documentation and desktop power settings. Exact configuration precedence and the way changes take effect can vary by release, so consult your distribution’s instructions for the appropriate reload or restart procedure rather than assuming one command applies everywhere.

If changing this setting does not stop suspension, your desktop environment may manage power behavior separately. Check its lid-close setting and your distribution’s guidance; there is no single current graphical menu path established for every Linux desktop.
Check docked and multiple-display behavior separately
systemd documents HandleLidSwitchDocked for a laptop that is docked or has more than one display connected. Its documented default is ignore, but distribution overrides or desktop integration may affect actual behavior. If closing the lid works differently with an external monitor or dock connected, check this setting as well as HandleLidSwitch.

A dock is optional hardware for an external-display setup, not a replacement for configuring power behavior. Before buying one, check that your laptop’s ports support the display outputs and power delivery you need, and verify Linux support for the hardware. Compatibility depends on the laptop, dock and drivers; no device compatibility was tested here.
Why an idle inhibitor is not the same fix
Temporary inhibition and persistent lid-event configuration address different things. systemd distinguishes lid-switch handling from inhibitor locks, and its documentation describes LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited as controlling whether lid-triggered actions are subject to inhibitors; the documented default is yes. Active inhibitors can be inspected through the logind interface. For details relevant to your installed version, use the current systemd documentation; the project’s older logind inhibitor reference identifies itself as obsolete.

Do not rely on an idle inhibitor, such as systemd-inhibit --what=idle, to prevent suspend caused by closing the lid. The freedesktop Idle Inhibition Service draft explicitly excludes suspend and hibernation inhibition from that API’s scope. A lid-switch event is not simply an idle timeout.
Use a closed laptop with care
With lid-triggered suspend ignored, the laptop may continue operating while closed. Set it on a suitable ventilated surface, and consider the effect on heat, battery use and security—for example, whether it remains unlocked. Safe operating conditions depend on the specific laptop and setup; no particular device or temperature has been tested here.
