Capture a structured, versioned receipt for every security-relevant AI sandbox action or decision. At minimum, record what happened, when and where it happened, which actor or workload was involved, what resource or boundary was affected, the decision and outcome, and the related run and correlation IDs. Sign the canonical receipt and bind it to relevant model, tool, policy, configuration, and artifact versions. Treat this as a practical design synthesis—not a universal standard: the cited guidance does not define one mandatory signed-receipt schema for AI sandbox runs.
What should one receipt contain?
Use one receipt per meaningful event, not one opaque record for an entire run. A run may include model requests, policy checks, tool calls, denied operations, and generated artifacts; separate records make those events easier to correlate and investigate. The fields below are an implementation checklist informed by audit-record and AI-security guidance, not a prescribed interoperable schema.

| Field group | Capture | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Receipt identity | Unique receipt ID; schema name and version; event type; producer or observer component; environment identifier. | Identifies the record, its meaning, and the system that emitted or observed it. |
| Time | Event time in UTC with declared precision; receipt creation and signing times; ingestion time if different. Record the clock source or synchronization context when timing may matter. | Separates when an event was said to occur from when it was recorded, signed, or received. |
| Run and correlation | Sandbox instance; run or session ID; request or correlation ID; parent operation or trace ID; tenant or project where applicable. | Connects records across the application, proxy, tool, and downstream provider. |
| Actor and authorization | User, service, agent, workload, or process identity; safe reference to the principal or credential; role or privilege context; policy or rule ID and authorization decision. | Shows which identity acted and under what authority, without embedding secrets. |
| Action and boundary | Attempted or completed operation; tool name; route or resource; relevant source and destination; access or flow-control boundary; observer identity. For denials or failures, include a denial reason or normalized error class. | Describes what crossed—or was stopped at—a security boundary and who could observe it. |
| Decision and outcome | Success, failure, or blocked status; result class; relevant state change; guardrail, policy, or anomaly decision and any relevant score or confidence value. | Distinguishes the attempted action, the system’s decision, and what resulted. |
| Integrity and provenance | Canonical receipt digest; signature; signer or key ID; algorithm and format; key or trust-policy reference. Add digests or version identifiers for relevant model components, tools, policies, prompts or configuration, and generated artifacts. | Supports integrity checks and links the event to the software and settings that shaped it. |
| Coverage and storage | Capture method and observer boundary; known exclusions; capture-health status; references to independent boundary logs or separately protected payload evidence. Store in access-controlled authoritative storage outside the sandbox where feasible, with retention and access/export auditing. | Documents what the receipt can establish, what it cannot see, and how evidence is protected. |
NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3 identifies useful audit-record content as event type, time, location, source, outcome, and identities or entities associated with the event; it also discusses details such as user or process identifiers, addresses, file names, and invoked access or flow-control rules. That is a general audit-record baseline, not a sandbox-specific receipt standard. See NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 3.
Which AI sandbox events deserve receipts?
Prioritize events that change access, state, or the system’s behavior, and events needed to reconstruct how an agent reached an outcome. A useful event taxonomy includes:
#1 Best Overall

- Model interactions: request initiation, model or component version, response completion or failure, and the decision to pass the result onward. Use a protected payload reference or digest when the full prompt or response need not be in the receipt.
- Policy and safety decisions: allow, deny, transform, escalate, or flag decisions, including the policy or rule version and relevant outcome classification.
- Tool and boundary actions: tool invocation, network or file access, attempted writes, data transfer, and blocked operations. Record the target and the observer that saw the action.
- Configuration changes: changes to system prompts or other model configuration that can affect behavior, with source, time, and version or digest.
- Generated artifacts and consequential state changes: artifact creation, modification, export, or downstream action, with provenance linking the artifact to the producing system, generation context, involved humans where applicable, and associated audit records.
- Capture and pipeline health: collector interruption, signing failure, queue loss, or export failure. Missing records cannot safely be interpreted as proof that nothing happened.
OWASP AISVS request/response logging guidance highlights security-event context such as policy decision, outcome, actor, tenant, route, tool name, request ID, and normalized error class. The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI calls for an audit trail of AI-system changes and specifically includes changes to system prompts or model configuration that affect behavior. OWASP AISVS provenance guidance also recommends signed origin and generation metadata for AI-generated artifacts. Apply these patterns to assets and risks that matter in your environment rather than logging detail without a purpose.
How should receipts handle prompts and other sensitive content?
Do not duplicate full prompts, model responses, tool output, credentials, or personal data into every telemetry stream by default. First decide what an investigator needs to answer. Often the receipt can carry a content digest, a protected payload reference, a redacted excerpt, or a normalized classification instead of the raw content. If full content is necessary, store it separately with explicit access controls, retention rules, and audited access.

- Define which event types may include content and which must not.
- Test redaction and access controls against secrets and personal information, including content returned by tools.
- Keep references stable enough to retrieve separately stored evidence when authorized.
- Set retention based on applicable legal, contractual, and business requirements; the cited guidance does not establish one universal duration.
What does the signature establish—and what does it not?
A valid digital signature can support the claim that the signed bytes have not changed since signing and that the corresponding private key produced the signature. Attribution to a person or organization depends on the key’s identity binding, custody, and verification policy. A trusted timestamp can support that a record existed by the asserted time, subject to trust in the timestamping service and its process. A transparency log can make later alteration or omission after submission more detectable.
None of those checks alone proves that the described action really occurred, that capture was contemporaneous, or that every event was recorded. An event that was never submitted to a log cannot be recovered from the log. OWASP’s guidance on verifying third-party agent execution evidence emphasizes the distinction between evidence integrity and evidence of execution.

For each verification, state the property actually checked: signer, artifact integrity, execution binding, timing, or capture coverage. Keep the expected values and verification policy outside the evidence being reviewed. Where possible, compare sandbox-produced receipts with an independent boundary observer, and document what that observer could and could not see.

How should a team implement and verify the design?
- Define event types and boundaries. Map model, policy, tool, storage, and network operations to the components that can observe them. Identify events that could be missed if the sandbox itself is the only source.
- Version the schema. Define required fields, allowed values, time precision, canonicalization, and how schema changes are handled. Reject or quarantine malformed records rather than silently dropping security-relevant fields.
- Bind context without over-collecting. Propagate stable run, request, and trace identifiers across services. Attach version IDs or digests for relevant configuration and artifacts, while keeping sensitive payloads in separately protected storage when feasible.
- Sign and protect records outside the workload. Define signer identity, key custody, rotation, verification rules, and authoritative storage. Make record access and export auditable.
- Test failure and tampering cases. Verify that altered receipts fail validation, signer and trust-policy checks behave as intended, and capture interruption produces an alert or explicit health record. Test whether independently observed boundary actions can be reconciled with the receipts.
- Review retention and access. Set retention and access policies for both receipts and linked payloads according to applicable obligations, and periodically check whether the records still support the investigations they were designed for.
