ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini can all help find and compare products, but they handle the job differently. ChatGPT offers a guided buyer’s-guide workflow; Perplexity combines product search with review analysis and supports in-assistant purchasing for some U.S. users; Gemini surfaces shopping listings and comparisons, while Google’s separate AI Mode in Search has its own shopping and checkout features. There is no independently measured head-to-head result establishing one as the best for every shopper. The right choice depends on your location, the detail you need, and whether you want to finish checkout with a retailer or through an eligible assistant feature.

How ChatGPT helps with shopping
Guided research for decisions with trade-offs
ChatGPT Shopping Research is designed for a decision involving several options or constraints. You can start with products already mentioned in a conversation, then describe needs such as brand, size, performance, comfort, style, or budget. The assistant can ask follow-up questions, let you refine the candidate set while it searches, and present a buyer’s guide with recommendations, rationales, strengths, trade-offs, merchant links, and side-by-side attributes. Results may draw on merchant data through the Agentic Commerce Protocol, publicly available product information, and other retail sources. If ChatGPT memory is enabled, it may use remembered preferences to personalize suggestions. ChatGPT Search shopping documentation also says product descriptions, labels such as “Budget-friendly,” and review summaries can be model-generated from third-party information; they are not guarantees or verified statements. Merchant ordering can take factors such as availability, price, quality, and whether a seller is the maker or primary seller into account, and Shopify catalog information is integrated. Where the purchase happens
Shopping Research supplies merchant links rather than promising an in-ChatGPT purchase for every product. Open the seller’s listing and verify the exact model, options, final price, taxes, fees, shipping, stock, and retailer terms. OpenAI’s guidance puts it plainly: “You should still rely on the retailer’s site for the final word on price and availability.”
How Perplexity handles product search and buying
Product cards and review analysis
Perplexity accepts conversational shopping queries and presents product cards. It says it analyzes reviews across sites and uses query relevance and product or merchant details; recommendations may also reflect your previous searches, interactions, or saved preferences. Its help page says advertisers cannot pay to place products in the related-products section. Instant Buy is limited, not universal checkout
Perplexity’s help page, last modified September 3, 2026, says Instant Buy is for U.S. users and works only with compatible merchants and eligible items from a starting set of product categories. When available, the flow sends the order and payment to the merchant, which fulfills it. Perplexity says eligibility is expanding, so a product card alone does not establish that Instant Buy is available for that item. For item-specific price, shipping, or fulfillment questions, Perplexity directs users to the merchant or retailer’s customer service.
Perplexity has also described Snap to Shop visual search, Shopify product integrations, select U.S. Buy with Pro offers, and a free Perplexity Merchant Program in its shopping launch post. The merchant program is an integration and data opportunity; it does not establish an affiliate commission arrangement.

Gemini app shopping is different from Google Search shopping
Shopping inside the Gemini app
Google’s April 7, 2026 announcement for India described Gemini shopping listings, comparison tables, prices from across the web, and places to buy. At the time of that announcement, Google said the India experience was available in English and Hindi. Those rollout details apply to the stated market and date; they should not be read as a promise that the same features or languages are available everywhere. AI Mode in Search has separate shopping features
Google AI Mode is part of Search, not simply another name for the Gemini app. In its November 13, 2025 announcement, Google described Search AI Mode shopping with product visuals, prices, reviews, inventory information, and side-by-side comparisons. Google also said agentic checkout was beginning to roll out for eligible U.S. merchants, with user confirmation required before purchase. Check the current Search interface and merchant listing to see what is available for your location and item. The same announcement described Google Shopping Graph as containing more than 50 billion product listings, 2 billion of which Google said were updated each hour. Those are Google’s platform figures as stated in 2025; they do not measure recommendation accuracy, listing quality, or consumer adoption. How to choose the right shopping assistant
Choose according to the work you need the tool to do, rather than a universal ranking that the available evidence does not establish.
- For a decision with many constraints: ChatGPT’s follow-up questions and refinements are built around shaping a comparison to your requirements.
- For product discovery with review analysis: Perplexity describes cross-site review analysis alongside product cards; check the underlying seller and product details before buying.
- For Google-linked listings and comparisons: Gemini and AI Mode can surface shopping information, but confirm which Google experience and regional rollout you are using.
- If buying inside the assistant matters: Check eligibility first. Perplexity Instant Buy is limited to compatible merchants and items for U.S. users; Google’s announced checkout applies to eligible U.S. merchants in Search, including AI Mode. ChatGPT Shopping Research provides merchant links.
- If current price or stock is decisive: Verify the exact product and final terms on the retailer’s site. Shopping listings and generated summaries are useful for narrowing choices, not substitutes for the merchant’s current listing.
- If personalization matters: Check what preferences or memory settings the service can use, and whether you want them enabled.
What a fair comparison can—and cannot—say
The provider documentation describes different workflows, data sources, and purchase options, but it does not supply a common independent performance test across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini. A meaningful personal comparison should use the same shopping question and constraints, then inspect whether each assistant shows enough detail and sources to verify its picks, how well it handles your location and language, and where the final transaction occurs. Product availability, merchant eligibility, and interface features can change, so check the current assistant and retailer pages before acting on a recommendation.
