Start with the settings and software tools your desktop already provides, adjust one thing at a time, and keep a clear way to undo larger changes.
Start with the settings already on your desktop
Before installing extra tools or copying commands, open your desktop’s settings app. Linux settings differ by distribution and desktop environment, so there is no single path that applies to every system. Ubuntu’s desktop guide covers system and user settings, privacy, hardware controls, and accessibility; KDE’s System Settings handbook documents accessibility and input-device modules.

Look for the controls that affect your daily use:
- Display: Adjust scaling, resolution, and display arrangement if text is too small or the screen layout is awkward.
- Keyboard and pointer: Review keyboard layout, repeat behavior, pointer speed, and other input options.
- Accessibility: Check for features such as larger text, visual or input aids, and other accommodations available in your desktop.
- Notifications: Reduce interruptions by adjusting which apps can alert you and when.
- Search: Learn how your desktop finds apps, files, and settings; search can be quicker than remembering where a control lives.
Change only what you need, then use the computer normally for a while. If a setting makes things less comfortable, return to the same panel and restore the earlier value.

Choose a desktop workflow, not a universal “best” desktop
The desktop environment shapes how you find settings, launch apps, manage windows, and customize the screen. There is no evidence here for one desktop being best for everyone; your devices, accessibility needs, and preferred way of working matter more than a general ranking.
#1 Best Overall
- Intel Core i5-1335U Processor (12M Cache, 12 Threads, up to 4.6 GHz) - 256GB Solid State Drive - 16GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 15.6" FHD (1920x1080) Non-Touch Anti-Glare Display - Intel UHD 620 Integrated Graphics - Stereo Speakers
- 720p HD Webcam with Privacy Shutter. Integrated Microphone - Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC (2x2) 8265, Bluetooth Version 4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.0, 1x USB 3.1 Type-C 3.1, Headphone/Mic Combo Port, 4-in-1 Card Reader, HDMI, Kensington Mini-Lock Slot
- Linux Mint (Cinnamon) 64-Bit - Keyboard with Full NumberPad - Fast Charging
GNOME
GNOME’s Human Interface Guidelines describe conventions for the GNOME interface. They are design documentation, not a consumer usability test, and their stated context particularly includes recent GNOME platforms using GTK 4 and Libadwaita. If you are considering GNOME, try its available session and see whether its conventions suit how you work.
KDE Plasma
KDE describes Plasma as customizable, with tools for window management, desktop effects, search, hardware management, and widgets. Its System Settings handbook also documents accessibility and input-device settings. That breadth can help if you want to shape more parts of the desktop through built-in controls.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
If your system offers multiple desktop sessions, try one before making a permanent change. A change of desktop can affect the whole workflow, while a small settings adjustment is easier to evaluate and reverse. Check the documentation for the desktop and release you actually use.

For routine app installs, start with the software center provided by your distribution. Graphical interfaces such as GNOME Software and KDE Discover can also be used to install Flatpak apps. Flatpak is a framework for distributing and running desktop apps across Linux distributions, but apps are sandboxed and may have different access to files, devices, or other host resources.

If an app cannot open a file, see a device, or integrate with another system feature, check that app’s support notes and permissions. Do not assume every Flatpak has identical access or behavior; the needed configuration depends on the app and the resource it uses. For software outside the app center, use instructions intended for your distribution and release rather than applying a command from an unrelated guide.
Make updates part of a predictable routine
Use your distribution’s normal update tool, whether that is a graphical updater or the package-management workflow it documents. The exact labels and process vary, so consult the documentation for your distribution and release instead of relying on instructions written for a different system. No single support lifecycle or update policy applies to all Linux distributions.

Installing fewer system-level tweaks also makes it easier to understand what changed when something behaves differently. If you do add a tool or modify a configuration, note its name and purpose so you can find the right instructions to reverse it.

Back up important files before a substantial system change, such as switching desktop environments or changing system configuration. KDE Linux documents backup and restore to a secondary disk or a network location. An external USB drive is one possible destination; network storage is another. Choose a destination with enough room for the files you need to protect, and confirm that you can access the backup before relying on it.

A backup protects your files, but it does not automatically explain how to undo every system change. For that, keep a brief change log: record what you changed, where you changed it, and how to restore the previous setting. Prefer one change at a time, especially when following instructions that differ by distribution or desktop.
Quick Recap
A low-risk way to simplify Linux
- Open your desktop’s settings app and identify one source of friction, such as small text, awkward input, or noisy notifications.
- Adjust the built-in setting that addresses it, then use the system long enough to judge the effect.
- If you need a different workflow, try an available desktop session before committing to a broader change.
- Install ordinary apps through your distribution’s software center where practical; check app permissions and support notes if sandboxing affects access.
- Before a major system change, back up important files and write down the change and its undo path.
