Benchmark candidate AI video models on the prompts, reference assets, and delivery constraints your team actually uses—not on a generic leaderboard. Set hard requirements first, score outputs against a shared rubric, measure the cost and time required to get an acceptable result, and preserve each test’s model version and settings. That gives you evidence about fit for your workflow rather than a claim that one model is universally best.
Decide what a successful test must establish
Before generating clips, write down the work the team expects the model to do and the conditions a candidate must meet. Separate hard gates from qualities you can trade off. A model that fails a non-negotiable input, output, permission, or privacy requirement should not win because a sample clip looks impressive.

- Use case: Specify the kinds of videos and production tasks you expect to deliver.
- Required capabilities: Note input modes, output format, usable duration, and any controls the workflow depends on.
- Operational limits: Set a maximum cost per accepted output and a turnaround target if either is material.
- Governance gates: Identify the safety controls, privacy and retention terms, and commercial permissions the intended use requires.
Only include requirements that matter to your team. Features and terms can differ by provider, deployment, region, and date, so confirm them for the specific offering under consideration.
Build a test set that resembles production
Use the same prompts and input assets for every candidate wherever their interfaces allow it. Include routine work as well as difficult cases: the subjects, motion, composition, and instructions most likely to expose weaknesses in your actual workflow. For image-to-video tests, give each candidate the same reference images and prompt instructions. Record any differences in setup that prevent a perfectly matched comparison.

There is no universal minimum sample size established by the cited examples. Their scopes illustrate different approaches, not a required recipe:
| Published example | Reported scope | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| T2VEval authors’ paper, 2025 | 148 prompts, 1,783 generated videos, and 13 models | The paper evaluates subjective dimensions including overall impression, text-video consistency, realness, and technical quality. |
| Google DeepMind’s VBench image-to-video comparison | 355 image-and-text pairs; the page does not state a year | A provider-reported human-preference test in a defined setup, not a prediction for other prompts or workflows. |
| Runway’s router evaluation article | 250 image-to-video prompts; the retrieved article does not state a year | A provider-reported dataset example, not a required sample size or independent ranking. |
These figures describe different experiments and goals, so they are not directly comparable. They also do not establish an independent, current, apples-to-apples ranking across providers.
Score outputs with a shared rubric
Define observable criteria and a common scale before reviewers see the results. Keep prompt and input alignment distinct from craft and motion quality; otherwise a visually polished clip can conceal that it ignored a required instruction. Weight criteria according to your hard constraints and production priorities.

| Evaluation axis | What reviewers or operators should record |
|---|---|
| Prompt and input alignment | Whether required content and reference inputs are represented as requested. |
| Visual quality | Whether the clip meets the team’s defined craft and technical threshold. |
| Motion and temporal consistency | Whether motion and scene continuity remain acceptable across the clip. |
| Controllability | Whether changes to prompts or inputs produce the intended changes reliably. |
| Workflow and API fit | Support for required inputs and outputs, documentation, SDKs, webhooks, versioning, and error handling. |
| Cost per usable output | Generation charges, retries, review, and finishing effort relative to outputs accepted for use. |
| Latency and reliability | Completion time, failures, and retries under the workload being tested. |
| Safety and governance | Applicable content controls, use policies, privacy and retention conditions, and commercial terms. |
Use a consistent rating scale, with written definitions for each score and a clear pass threshold for any must-have criterion. Where practical, hide model identities from reviewers to reduce expectation bias. Collect short reasons for low scores so the team can distinguish, for example, a missed instruction from an unacceptable visual artifact.
Published Video-Bench work emphasizes alignment to input conditions, aesthetic quality, temporal consistency, and human preference. T2VEval reports subjective measures that include overall impression, text consistency, realness, and technical quality. Automated metrics can help sort or flag large batches, but the cited work does not establish one automatic score as a substitute for human review across production contexts. Validate automated signals against judgments that matter to your team.
Measure the effort behind an accepted clip
Nominal generation price alone does not show what it costs to deliver usable video. For every request, log whether generation completed, failures, retries, latency, reviewer time, spend, and whether the output passed the rubric. Include finishing work needed to reach the acceptance bar.

Calculate cost per usable output as total generation spend plus the cost of retries, review, and finishing divided by the number of outputs accepted for use. Use the same accounting method for each candidate. If no output passes, record that rather than presenting a misleading per-clip figure. Compare latency under the same workload and note whether delays or failures change how the tool would fit the production schedule.

Also assess the practical API and workflow burden: documentation, SDKs, webhooks, versioning, and error handling can change the effort required to operate a model reliably. Runway’s model-router documentation describes preferences for cost, latency, or quality and a maximum spend per generation. Those are vendor-described features, not a substitute for your own evaluation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the comparison reproducible
For each test, retain the exact prompt, input asset, generation settings, output, date, model name and identifier, and any version or release label the provider exposes. Note failures and manual interventions as well as successful results. This record lets the team revisit a score when a model or workflow changes and makes differences in setup visible.

OpenAI’s Sora 2 Pro API documentation describes model snapshots as a way to lock a specific version so performance and behavior remain consistent. Version pinning can make a comparison easier to repeat; it does not establish that the pinned model is the best choice. Rerun the relevant pilot after a material model or workflow change.
Make safety and procurement part of the decision
Test the content and workflow the team intends to use, then have the appropriate stakeholders review the candidate’s current policies and terms. Check safety controls, privacy and retention, commercial-use conditions, and contractual requirements against the actual deployment and region. These details can change; confirm them directly with each provider rather than assuming that one provider’s documentation applies to another.
OpenAI’s Sora system card discusses risks including non-consensual intimate imagery and misleading video, and describes classifier-based mitigation. That is evidence about the safety documentation for that system, not a cross-provider comparison or proof that another candidate has equivalent controls. Treat the relevant controls and terms as gates for each candidate individually.
Turn the pilot into a selection decision
- Apply hard gates first. Remove candidates that do not meet a requirement the team marked non-negotiable.
- Compare rubric results. Review performance by use case and criterion, not just an overall average that can hide a critical failure.
- Compare operating cost and turnaround. Use accepted outputs, retries, review, and finishing effort—not just the listed price of one generation.
- Review governance and integration fit. Confirm that the actual terms and operational support suit the planned deployment.
- Record the decision and its scope. State which workload, settings, versions, and constraints the result covers, and preserve the artifacts needed to rerun the comparison.
Provider-reported benchmarks can help explain what a provider tested, but their sample, task, and comparison scope matter. Google DeepMind’s reported preference test, for example, covers 355 image-and-text pairs in a VBench image-to-video setup; it should not be read as a guarantee for your team’s prompts. Your own workload-specific pilot is the evidence for your own selection.
