How Smart Home Technology Is Supporting Daily Life in Retirement Villages

Smart-home technology in retirement villages can help with everyday routines, safety monitoring and access to support—but it does not guarantee that a fall will be detected or an emergency resolved. Whether it helps depends on the resident’s needs and preferences, what information the system collects, how reliably it works, and who responds when it raises an alert.

How can smart home technology help older adults in retirement villages?

Smart-home technology is broader than voice speakers or automated lights. It can include sensors, connected platforms, automated controls and interactive interfaces that monitor activity, prompt a task, communicate information or respond to a need. A 2026 systematic review of 30 studies from 10 countries, covering studies published from 2020 to 2025, found that ambient sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) platforms were the most frequently studied group. Voice assistants and social or interactive robots appeared less often. The review identified possible uses in physiological monitoring, safety, functional and emergency detection, social interaction and cognitive support.

Some studies in that review reported benefits such as greater independence or quality of life, improved chronic-disease management, or reduced healthcare use. But the studies differed in methods and outcomes, so they do not establish that a particular device will produce those results in every village. The authors write that “Smart home technologies show potential to support ageing in place by enhancing safety, independence and chronic disease management, while possibly reducing healthcare utilisation and improving quality of life.” The qualifications “show potential” and “possibly” matter: these are promising possibilities, not guaranteed outcomes. Read the 2026 systematic review.

Examples of what connected systems might do

  • Notice activity: Motion or other ambient sensors can register patterns of activity. A change may prompt a check-in, depending on how the system is configured and what response the village provides.
  • Support routines: Bed-occupancy or gait sensors may be used to observe aspects of movement or routine. Their usefulness depends on the resident’s needs, the accuracy of the system and how its information is interpreted.
  • Monitor a specific hazard: Stove monitoring may help identify a potential safety issue, while connected controls may let residents operate selected home functions.
  • Offer another way to interact: Voice or touch interfaces can provide prompts or access to connected functions, but they may not suit everyone.

These are categories described in research and consumer-facing coverage, not endorsements or proof of clinical effectiveness. A fall-detection feature, in particular, should not be treated as a guarantee that a fall will be detected or help will arrive. A 2021 scoping review discussed fall detection and ambient-assisted living in dementia care while also noting barriers such as privacy, user experience and willingness to accept assistance. See the 2021 scoping review.

What does retirement-village research say about resident preferences?

Research conducted in retirement-community settings illustrates that adoption is not simply a matter of installing equipment. In one qualitative study involving residents of independent- and assisted-living continuing-care communities, privacy could be a barrier, while a sense that the technology addressed a real need could outweigh privacy concerns. A separate study at TigerPlace examined preferences and perceived need for bed, gait, stove, motion and video sensors, and also found privacy concerns. These studies help explain how residents weigh potential value against intrusiveness; their age means they should not be treated as evidence of current products’ performance. Read the continuing-care community study and the TigerPlace study.

An early smart-home project in an independent retirement facility used a participatory evaluation with nine residents who agreed to have systems installed in their apartments. It is a small, older example of involving residents in implementation—not a basis for assuming that a modern system will work the same way elsewhere. Read the project evaluation.

Do smart home sensors affect privacy?

They can, because sensors and connected systems collect or infer information about activity, routines or other aspects of daily life. How intrusive that feels varies by person and by sensor. Video can feel more revealing than less descriptive sensors, but preferences are not uniform; residents should be able to understand the difference before choosing.

A 2024 scoping review of 15 studies on smart-home surveillance perceptions among adults aged 50 and older found that 13 studies (87%) discussed privacy concerns. Seven (47%) discussed risks such as breaches or third-party misuse alongside potential benefits, and nine (60%) reported enthusiasm about possible home-safety benefits. These are counts of studies included in the review, not percentages of older adults or retirement-village residents. The review also found that only four studies (27%) explored users’ knowledge of why data was collected. Its authors call for greater user agency over data collection, use and disclosure, alongside stronger organizational accountability. Read the 2024 scoping review.

A 2021 review of privacy in smart-home technology likewise emphasizes considering safety, privacy and data security together. Read the privacy review. In practice, a resident should be able to get clear answers about what is sensed, who can see the information, how long it is kept and whether they can opt in, pause monitoring or change settings. These are practical questions arising from documented concerns—not a single operating standard established by the studies.

How to assess a smart-home system before agreeing to use it

Start with the need the system is intended to address, then assess the sensor, the data it handles and the support behind it. A feature has limited value if the resident finds it difficult or intrusive, or if an alert has no dependable response pathway.

1. Match the feature to a real need

Ask what the system is meant to do: notice activity, monitor a particular routine, flag a possible hazard, provide a prompt or make a control easier to use. A sensor should have a clear purpose for that resident rather than being installed simply because it is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the interaction and accessibility

Passive sensing may reduce the need to operate a device, while voice and touch interfaces require interaction and can be helpful to some residents but frustrating to others. Consider hearing, vision, dexterity, cognition, language and confidence with digital tools. Ask whether the resident can use the system comfortably and whether a family member or caregiver’s support is available if wanted. The 2026 systematic review identifies digital literacy and ease of use among factors affecting adoption.

3. Establish privacy and control

Find out exactly what data is captured and who receives it. Ask whether the resident can choose which features are active, pause or withdraw from monitoring, and change permissions later. Clarify retention and disclosure practices, including whether information may be shared beyond the village or care team.

4. Trace the alert and response process

Ask what happens after a sensor flags a concern: who receives the alert, which staff member or service checks it, how quickly a response is expected, and how the resident or a chosen contact is informed. Also ask how staff distinguish a false alarm from a genuine concern, and what happens if an alert is missed. Detection is only one part of a response arrangement.

5. Plan for reliability, cost and compatibility

Discuss how the system behaves during a network or power failure, who maintains it and whether it works with the village’s existing infrastructure and care arrangements. Consider the full cost of purchase, installation, connectivity, ongoing service and maintenance. The 2026 review identifies cost and technical reliability as barriers, but it does not establish current prices or specifications for particular products. Those details vary and should be checked with the provider.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell residents

The evidence supports a careful conclusion: connected sensors and controls may assist with monitoring, safety, routines and independence, but outcomes depend on context. A 2026 review spanning 30 studies and 10 countries provides a broad view of possible applications, while retirement-community studies show why perceived need, privacy and resident preference matter. The evidence does not establish universal health benefits, a standard village response model or long-term cost effectiveness. Local laws, product availability and village operating arrangements also differ by country.

For residents and families, the most useful question is not whether a system is “smart,” but whether it addresses a specific need on terms the resident accepts—and whether the village can explain what happens when the system works, fails or raises an uncertain alert.
