What “PK” Means in ZIP—and Who Created the Format

PK stands for Phil Katz, whom the Library of Congress identifies as the developer of the original ZIP format. The initials belong to PKWARE’s name—not to a hidden mark in each ZIP archive.

PK stands for Phil Katz, the programmer the Library of Congress identifies as the developer of the original ZIP format. The initials appear in the name PKWARE; they are not a mark hidden inside every ZIP archive. ZIP files do have a recognizable internal structure, but that is a separate part of the story.

What does PK stand for?

PKWARE’s initials refer to Phil Katz. The Library of Congress’s record for ZIP File Format Version 6.3.3 says Katz developed the original format, “hence the ‘PK’ in PKWARE.” Library of Congress: ZIP File Format, Version 6.3.3 (PKWARE)

So the title’s “inside every ZIP file” is shorthand, not a literal description of the archive’s contents. PK is visible in the name of the company associated with the format; it is not a set of initials stamped into each archive.

Who invented the ZIP file?

The Library of Congress credits Phil Katz with developing the original ZIP format. A separate historical account in the Common ZIP Spec says the format was placed in the public domain in 1989 by Katz and Gary Conway. These accounts describe different aspects of the history: one identifies the original developer, while the other names two people in connection with the format’s release. They do not establish a precise division of work between Katz and Conway.

What is a ZIP file, structurally?

A ZIP file is a container: it groups one or more files, commonly compressing them and sometimes encrypting them. It is not simply one compressed stream with no internal organization.

The Library of Congress describes an archive as having local file headers and file data, followed by a central directory. The directory records file names and metadata used for operations such as extraction. That structure helps explain how one archive can hold multiple independently listed files.

How did ZIP become more than an archive program’s format?

The first ZIP specification was published in 1990, according to the Library of Congress, and PKWARE continued to update the format in APPNOTE.TXT. ZIP evolved over time, with attention to compatibility with earlier archives. Library of Congress: ZIP File Format (PKWARE)

Its role also expanded beyond standalone archive utilities. The Library of Congress identifies ZIP as a container format used by Office Open XML and OpenDocument Format. In other words, ZIP’s packaging structure is useful as a building block for other document formats, not only for files people manually compress and extract.
