What Shipbuilding Terms Like Deadweight Tonnage, Delivery Window, and Classification Mean

A practical guide to DWT, shipbuilding milestones, delivery windows and classification records— including draught assumptions, contract caveats and statutory-certification limits.

Deadweight tonnage (DWT) is a ship’s weight-carrying capacity at a stated draught, not its enclosed volume and not cargo alone. Delivery dates can refer to separate contract, construction, handover, or regulatory milestones, so a “delivery window” has meaning only in the governing contract or rule. Classification records whether a vessel meets a classification society’s technical rules after survey; it is separate from flag-state registration and statutory certificates.

Deadweight tonnage: the weight a ship can carry

DWT answers a weight question: how much total weight a vessel can take on while floating at a specified loading condition. The total includes cargo, fuel (bunkers), lubricants, stores, fresh water, crew effects and other carried weights. It is therefore broader than commercial cargo capacity.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) defines deadweight by comparing the vessel’s displacement with its lightweight. In the actual-deadweight definition, displacement is measured in water with a specific gravity of 1.025 at the ship’s actual draught, then the ship’s lightweight is subtracted. In simplified form:

“Lightweight” means the ship as a constructed vessel, including its permanent structure and equipment, but without cargo, fuel, stores, crew and similar variable loads. Because displacement changes with draught, DWT is meaningful only when the draught or loading condition is known.

Actual DWT versus maximum DWT

Registry and technical records may distinguish actual deadweight from maximum deadweight. Maximum deadweight uses displacement at a specified maximum or design draught minus lightweight:

maximum DWT = displacement at specified draught − lightweight

A ship’s actual DWT can be lower when it is operated at a lighter draught, in shallow water, in a seasonal load-line zone, or under another operational restriction. A maximum figure is not a promise that the ship can carry that amount on every voyage. The applicable load line, water density, stability limits, port restrictions and operating instructions still control how much weight may actually be loaded.

Why DWT is not the same as cargo payload

Suppose a record lists a vessel’s DWT. That number does not tell you how many tonnes of saleable cargo can be loaded without further information. Fuel for the voyage, water, provisions, spare parts, crew effects and other consumables occupy part of the deadweight allowance. A long voyage or a ship carrying unusually large stores may leave less capacity for cargo than a short voyage under otherwise similar conditions.

To estimate cargo payload, an operator must start with the relevant DWT at the intended draught and subtract the non-cargo weights required for that voyage. The result can vary from trip to trip. Never relabel DWT as “cargo capacity” unless the source gives a ship-specific cargo figure and explains its loading assumptions.

DWT versus gross tonnage

DWT is a weight measure. Gross tonnage (GT) is a separate tonnage measure based on the enclosed volume of a ship under the applicable tonnage convention. A vessel can have a high GT because it has substantial enclosed spaces while having a different DWT based on its displacement and lightweight. IMO forms list these as different data fields; they should not be substituted for one another.

Which shipbuilding dates are being described?

Ship records commonly show several dates that are easy to collapse into one. The IMO Compendium “Ship Registry & Company Details” treats the building-contract date, keel-laying date and delivery date as distinct milestones.

Record or phrase What it marks How to read it
Building contract date The date the shipbuilding contract is placed between builder and owner. It marks the contractual start of the project, not the start of physical construction or the handover.
Keel-laying date The date the keel is laid or the vessel reaches a comparable stage of construction. It is a construction milestone and can occur after the contract is signed.
Delivery date Delivery of the completed vessel from builder to owner. In an ordinary registry context, it describes the builder-to-owner handover milestone.
Scheduled delivery date A date recorded in a project or vessel-information form as the planned delivery target. It is a schedule entry; the contract may allow a period, extensions or conditions around it.

Contract date is not keel laying

An owner and builder can sign a contract while the design is being completed, long before steel work begins. The contract date identifies when the agreement was placed. Keel laying identifies a later physical stage. A database that contains both is not showing duplicate dates; it is preserving two different events.

Delivery is normally handover, but the context matters

In the ordinary registry sense, delivery is when the builder delivers the vessel to the owner. The event can involve completion of construction, trials, documentation, payment, acceptance and transfer of possession. Those conditions are governed by the particular shipbuilding contract, not by the label alone.

A form can also show a “scheduled delivery date.” BIMCO’s SHIPTERM S sample ship-information schedule uses that label, while BIMCO’s NEWBUILDCON resource is identified as a standard shipbuilding-contract resource (latest edition noted there: 2007). A scheduled date is therefore a planning target unless the contract turns it into a binding date or period.

What a “delivery window” really means

A delivery window is a contract-specific period in which the builder is permitted or expected to deliver the vessel. There is no universal industry-wide width established for the phrase. One contract might state a single scheduled date; another might define a range of dates, an earliest acceptable date and a cancelling date, or a date subject to extension.

Read the clause, not just the headline date

When a document mentions a window, locate the shipbuilding agreement and check:

  • Start and end dates: identify the first and last dates that qualify as timely delivery.
  • Extension rights: determine whether defined delay causes, such as exceptional weather, strikes, regulatory changes or other specified events, extend the period.
  • Trials and acceptance: see whether sea trials, gas trials, class completion, punch-list work or owner acceptance must occur before delivery counts.
  • Notice requirements: check how the builder must notify the owner and how the owner must respond.
  • Remedies: identify liquidated damages, price adjustments, cancellation rights or other consequences of late delivery.

Do not infer any of these provisions from the words “delivery window” alone. A database summary can show a date, but only the contract establishes the parties’ rights and the legal effect of missing it.

Scheduled date, contractual period and actual handover

These are three different questions:

  1. What was planned? The scheduled delivery date or target in a project form.
  2. What period was allowed? The contractual window, including any agreed extensions.
  3. When did handover occur? The actual delivery date recorded after the vessel was delivered from builder to owner.

A ship can be delivered before or after a scheduled date and still fall within a contractual period. Conversely, a date that looks close to the target can be late if the contract required delivery by an earlier cancelling date.

Why regulatory “delivery” can be different

Regulations sometimes use delivery as a technical trigger for applying new requirements. That use should not be confused with the commercial handover date.

The Croatian Register of Shipping’s Part 1, Chapter 1 classification rules, published in January 2026, state that for determining the application of certain mandatory SOLAS and MARPOL requirements, “delivery” means completion of the initial survey on which the certificate is based, as entered on the statutory certificate. This is a scoped convention-related interpretation. It does not redefine every shipbuilding contract or every registry’s delivery field.

The practical consequence is that the relevant date depends on the rule being applied. For a contract question, read the contract’s delivery clause. For a SOLAS or MARPOL applicability question, read the applicable convention, flag-state guidance and the statutory certificate entry. A commercial handover date and a statutory-certification date may not be identical.

How to avoid a date mistake

  • Name the document that supplies the date: contract, registry record, class record or statutory certificate.
  • State whether the date is scheduled, contractual, actual handover or regulatory.
  • Identify the rule, convention or jurisdiction when “delivery” triggers a requirement.
  • Do not apply the Croatian Register’s scoped interpretation as a universal definition for all societies or contracts.

What classification means

A classification society develops technical rules for ship design, construction and maintenance, then surveys the vessel to assess compliance with the applicable rules. If the requirements are met, the society issues or maintains class documentation. IACS describes classification as establishing minimum technical standards intended to improve maritime safety and protect seafarers throughout a vessel’s lifecycle.

The three class fields readers often see

IMO registry data separates at least three ideas that are often blended together:

  • Classification society: the organization whose rules and survey process apply to the vessel.
  • Class status: whether class is maintained, suspended or withdrawn.
  • Class notation: technical symbols or descriptions assigned under that society’s rules to record approved characteristics, service restrictions or additional features.

A class certificate is an attestation that the vessel complied with the society’s applicable rules following the society’s attendance and survey. It is evidence of class at the stated time and conditions; it is not a guarantee that every component remains compliant indefinitely. Ships must continue to undergo the surveys and inspections required by the society to retain class.

Maintained, suspended and withdrawn class

Maintained generally indicates that required surveys and class conditions are current under the society’s rules. Suspended indicates that class is temporarily not in force, commonly because required surveys, repairs or conditions have not been completed. Withdrawn indicates that the society has removed class rather than merely pausing it. The exact triggers and reinstatement process depend on that society’s rules, so a status field should be read with its date and the society’s published requirements.

What a class notation can and cannot tell you

A notation may identify a vessel’s service type, construction features, machinery arrangements, ice capability or other characteristics recognized by the society. The meaning belongs to the society’s rulebook; the notation should not be decoded by analogy with another society’s symbols.

Class does not equal flag-state registration. Nor does it automatically prove that all statutory safety, security, pollution-prevention, radio or labor certificates are valid. A classification society may perform work as a flag-state recognized organization, but that statutory role and the class role remain distinct records. To verify a legal operating requirement, inspect the relevant flag-state certificate and its validity, not just the class line.

How the terms fit together in a vessel record

Consider a newbuilding record that lists a 2024 contract date, a later keel-laying date, a scheduled delivery date, a DWT figure and a classification society. Each item answers a different question:

  • The contract date tells you when the builder-owner agreement was placed.
  • The keel-laying date tells you when construction reached the recorded physical milestone.
  • The scheduled date tells you what the project planned, unless the contract gives it stronger effect.
  • The delivery date tells you when the vessel was handed from builder to owner in the ordinary registry sense.
  • The DWT tells you the total weight allowance at the stated draught basis, including non-cargo weights.
  • The class fields identify the technical rule set, current class status and any notation; they do not replace statutory certificates.

Reading the fields together prevents a common error: treating one date, number or status as a summary of the entire ship’s legal, commercial and technical condition.

Reader checklist for interpreting a shipbuilding document

  1. For DWT, find the basis. Is the figure actual or maximum, and what draught and loading condition does it use?
  2. Separate weight from volume. Do not substitute DWT for gross tonnage or another tonnage measure.
  3. Allow for non-cargo weights. Fuel, stores, water, crew effects and other loads consume deadweight capacity.
  4. Label each date. Contract, keel laying, scheduled delivery and actual handover are separate milestones.
  5. Locate the delivery clause. Record the window, extension events, acceptance conditions and remedies rather than assuming a standard period.
  6. Identify the governing rule. A convention or classification rule may define delivery differently for a specific purpose.
  7. Check all class fields. Record the society, class status and notation, with the date of the entry.
  8. Verify statutory documents separately. Confirm the flag-state certificates and any recognized-organization details relevant to the operation.
