What Sets Gen Z Entrepreneurs Apart From Prior Generations?

U.S. surveys point to differences in Gen Z founders’ reported mission, AI use and startup motivations, while cautioning that age and career stage also matter.

Recent U.S. studies point to three notable differences: younger business owners more often describe their companies as mission-driven, Gen Z founders in a 2025 survey reported higher AI use at launch, and they more often cited opportunity and community impact as reasons to start. These are patterns in particular samples—not proof that every Gen Z founder shares the same values, uses AI, or builds the same kind of business.

What the comparisons show

The clearest distinctions concern business identity, reported launch behavior and stated motivation. George Mason University’s 2026 account of research using 2024 U.S. micro-business survey responses found a higher share of owners under 30 identified their business as mission-driven than owners overall. Gusto’s 2026 survey of people who started a business in 2025 found Gen Z founders reported more AI use at launch and different reasons for starting than older founders.

The studies measure different populations and questions. Their percentages should be read within the samples described, not combined into a single profile or treated as universal traits of a generation.

Are Gen Z entrepreneurs more purpose-driven?

In David Lucas’s analysis of 1,600 U.S. micro-business owners responding to the 2024 Entrepreneurship in the Population (EPOP) Survey, 629 respondents identified their business as mission-driven, focused on environmental sustainability and/or social impact. George Mason University’s Costello College of Business reported that 46% of owners under 30 identified their business as mission-driven, compared with 37% of all owners in the analyzed sample. George Mason University’s summary of the findings defines micro-business owners as entrepreneurs with fewer than ten employees.

The account also reports that each age cohort was approximately 19% more likely than its immediate elders to declare mission-driven status. That is the reported pattern within this study; it does not establish that age alone caused the difference, or that older entrepreneurs care less about social or environmental good. The measure is whether respondents identified the business itself as mission-driven.

Younger founders more often combined mission areas

Among mission-driven entrepreneurs, early-career founders were more than twice as likely as those aged 50–64 to pursue an integrated mission spanning social, environmental and community impact. Older mission-driven founders more often concentrated on one domain, according to the same university account. The findings on mission domains describe differences in how business missions were framed, not the sincerity or importance of an individual founder’s values.

How are Gen Z founders using AI?

Gusto’s 2026 report says 71% of its Gen Z founders used AI to launch a business started in 2025, compared with 42% of Baby Boomer founders. Gen Z accounted for 9% of new U.S. businesses started in 2025 in the report, compared with 5% for Baby Boomers. Gusto’s analysis describes AI as a way many founders reduce time or cost; it does not show that AI by itself explains who starts a business.

AI use does not mean these businesses are necessarily technology companies. Gusto’s analysis says Gen Z businesses were often in hands-on, in-person areas such as agriculture, hospitality, recreation, retail and trades. It also notes a similar sector mix among young adults a decade earlier, a reminder that age and career stage may shape the kinds of businesses people start.

Why do younger founders say they start businesses?

In Gusto’s survey of Gen Z founders, 32% cited seizing a business opportunity and 40% cited positive community impact. Eight percent cited their own or a partner’s job loss. These are respondents’ reported reasons, not an exhaustive accounting of every founder’s motives. Gusto’s breakdown of founder motivations gives the figures in the context of its 2025-start cohort.

How strong is the evidence—and what does it not prove?

The studies cover different groups

  • George Mason’s account describes Lucas’s analysis of 1,600 U.S. micro-business owners in the 2024 EPOP Survey. NORC describes EPOP as a multi-year survey of U.S. entrepreneurial activity that includes current and former owners, freelancers and people considering starting a business. NORC’s EPOP overview notes public data are available for 2022 through 2025.
  • Gusto surveyed 1,051 founders who started a business in 2025. Its separate platform analysis used data from more than 500,000 small businesses, weighted to represent U.S. firms with fewer than 50 employees. The founder survey and platform analysis are distinct evidence sources. Gusto’s methodology describes both.
  • U.S. Bank’s separate 2026 survey included 1,000 small-business owners, with an oversample of 200 Gen Z owners; 60% of all surveyed owners planned to hire. That survey is not a continuation of Gusto’s founder cohort. U.S. Bank’s survey findings concern owners’ growth plans, not the same measure as Gusto’s launch research.

Launch behavior is not business success

These findings support comparisons about mission identity, AI use, business sectors and reasons for starting. They do not establish that Gen Z entrepreneurs are more successful, grow faster or are more likely to survive. Measures of new-business formation and launch behavior cannot answer those outcome questions; U.S. Bank’s reported hiring plans come from a different owner survey.

What generations can learn from each other

Lucas, an assistant professor of management at George Mason University’s Costello College of Business, argued that experience and youthful ambition can be mutually useful: “Entrepreneurs across the age spectrum have so much to learn from each other. The younger, more idealistic cohort can learn from the disciplined and productive ways of more experienced businesspeople who have a real understanding of the limitations and possibilities involved in venturing. And by contrast, the energy and spark and vision associated with youth can stir up productive conversation in the other direction as well.” George Mason published the statement on October 8, 2026.
