Recent Art Basel and UBS surveys show that family connections and Instagram are important entry points for Gen Z high-net-worth collectors. In the 2026 survey, 40% said family was their primary route into collecting, compared with 28% of collectors overall. A separate UBS summary of the 2025 global collecting survey found that 51% of collectors had bought through Instagram, up from 43% in 2023. Those figures describe surveyed wealthy collectors—not Gen Z as a whole—and show access and purchasing habits, not that family money or Instagram alone causes higher spending.
What the latest surveys actually found
The strongest current evidence comes from the Art Basel and UBS 2026 survey of 3,100 high-net-worth individuals in 10 markets: the United States, United Kingdom, Mainland China, Hong Kong, France, Australia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Singapore.

| Finding | What it measures | Survey context |
|---|---|---|
| 40% of Gen Z respondents named family as their primary route into collecting | How respondents entered collecting | 2026 UBS survey; high-net-worth respondents |
| 28% of respondents overall named family as their primary route | Overall comparison group | 2026 UBS survey |
| 51% of collectors reported Instagram purchases | Purchase participation through Instagram | 2025 Art Basel and UBS survey, summarized by UBS |
| 43% reported Instagram purchases | Earlier comparison point | 2023 Art Basel and UBS survey |
| Nearly 90% of Gen Z respondents who had inherited works kept them | Retention among those who inherited art | 2025 survey summary; conditional finding |
The family statistic is not a measure of how many Gen Z collectors receive spending money or inherit collections. It records the route respondents identified as most important when they began collecting. Likewise, the Instagram figure does not say that every purchase was expensive, made directly from an artist, or funded by family wealth.
Why family networks matter
Access before affordability
Family can provide an introduction to galleries, fairs, advisers and artists before a young collector has built those relationships independently. It can also supply knowledge about authentication, provenance, insurance and storage—areas that make the art market difficult for newcomers. A family route therefore reflects social and cultural access as well as financial capacity.

Inheritance is not the same as new buying
The 2025 survey’s inheritance result is narrowly defined: nearly 90% of Gen Z respondents who had inherited works said they kept them. It does not establish that most Gen Z collectors inherited art, nor does it show the value or quality of those works. Keeping an inherited piece may reflect emotional attachment, a long-term collecting strategy or the practical difficulty of selling it.
Instagram has become a transaction channel, not just a showcase
The increase from 43% of collectors reporting Instagram purchases in 2023 to 51% in the 2025 survey indicates that the platform is participating in buying decisions. Collectors can discover artists, follow exhibitions, message galleries or artists, and move from a social post to a private sale. The survey does not identify the average price, the share of purchases completed inside Instagram, or whether the platform was the final checkout channel.

Discovery can lead to direct artist contact
Art Basel has described an individual collector who encountered an artist at the Noguchi Museum, contacted her through Instagram, visited her studio and bought a work directly. That sequence illustrates how online discovery and offline trust can connect, but it is an anecdote rather than a representative measure of Gen Z behavior.

What “spending big” does—and does not—prove
The headline framing suggests unusually high expenditure, but the cited evidence does not establish a single current spending total for Gen Z. In the 2023 survey sample, Gen Z collectors had the highest average expenditure on prints and digital art. That was a finding from that survey’s sample and should not be treated as a current ranking across every category or market.

Different editions also measure different things. The 2024 survey page describes research conducted in mid-2024 with just over 3,660 high-net-worth individuals across 14 markets, while the 2026 survey covers 3,100 respondents in 10 markets. The 2023 spending result, the 2025 Instagram and inheritance findings, and the 2026 family-route result are therefore not one simultaneous snapshot.
How to read the generational claim responsibly
- Population: The surveys focus on high-net-worth individuals, not all Gen Z adults.
- Geography: Results reflect the named markets and may not describe collectors elsewhere.
- Measure: “Primary route,” “Instagram purchase” and “kept inherited works” are different questions.
- Cause: The findings show association and reported behavior; they do not prove that family wealth or Instagram independently caused higher spending.
- Evidence type: Survey percentages are broad indicators, while the museum-to-studio purchase story is one reported example.
What this means for the art market
For galleries and artists, the pattern points to a hybrid path: family relationships can open the door, while Instagram can shorten the distance between discovery and a conversation about buying. That does not eliminate the role of galleries, fairs, advisers or physical visits. Instead, digital contact increasingly works alongside established market infrastructure.

For readers trying to understand the trend, the defensible conclusion is narrower than “all Gen Z is spending big.” Among wealthy collectors surveyed by Art Basel and UBS, family is a more commonly reported entry route for Gen Z than for collectors overall, and Instagram purchases have become more common across the collector population. The surveys do not provide a universal Gen Z spending figure or prove that inherited money is behind every purchase.
