SAP develops business software, including SAP S/4HANA, its flagship enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. ERP is a software category—not another name for SAP. In a company, SAP ERP can connect work across areas such as finance, procurement, inventory, manufacturing, sales, and human resources through linked processes and shared business information. Which capabilities a company uses depends on its products, edition, and configuration.
What does SAP mean, and what does SAP do?
SAP is a company and a software brand. SAP describes itself as “a company that develops ERP software and solutions, as well as many other business applications.” Its portfolio includes software for finance, procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, human resources, customer experience, analytics, and other business needs. SAP S/4HANA is its flagship ERP solution, but not every SAP product is part of one ERP installation or database. SAP’s overview of SAP and ERP lists more than 230 million cloud users and more than 100 solutions covering business functions; these are SAP-reported figures from an undated page accessed in 2026, not independent measures of adoption or results.

ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. It refers to software that supports and connects core business processes across an organization. SAP is one vendor that makes ERP software, as well as other applications; it is not a generic term for all ERP systems.
What is SAP ERP, and how does it work?
An ERP system organizes capabilities around business functions, such as accounting or purchasing, while linking the records and processes those functions share. SAP’s ERP explainer describes modules focused on business areas that share a common database. In practice, a connected platform can help teams work with consistent business records, but companies still configure their systems and may need integrations with CRM, HR, industry-specific software, or other data sources. Those integrations can use connectors, APIs, enterprise service buses, or integration-platform services. SAP’s ERP explainer describes these concepts.

Example: from a customer order to fulfillment
Consider a company selling a product. Sales records the customer’s order. Inventory and supply-chain processes help establish whether the item is available and coordinate its movement. If stock is short, manufacturing may plan replenishment or production. Delivery completes fulfillment, while billing records the financial side of the sale. This is an illustrative order-to-cash flow, not a single configuration used by every SAP customer. SAP’s Cloud ERP product tour describes order-to-cash, fulfillment, inventory visibility, manufacturing approaches, and material requirements planning.
What are the main SAP ERP modules and business uses?
People often use “module” to mean a capability focused on one business area. Names and packaging vary across SAP products and editions, and the following areas do not imply that every customer has them all.
Rank #2
| Business area | What it can support |
|---|---|
| Finance and accounting | Accounting, financial reporting, compliance, risk, and close processes. SAP’s product tour describes monitoring and closing accounts with reporting and automation features. |
| Procurement and sourcing | Purchasing workflows that can link requisitions, purchase orders, contracts, supplier interactions, and invoices. SAP describes procure-to-pay analysis and automation. |
| Supply chain and inventory | Planning stock and goods movements, checking product availability, and supporting shipping, warehousing, or transportation. |
| Manufacturing | Production planning and control, quality management, and production processes. SAP’s tour gives make-to-stock, make-to-order, and engineer-to-order examples and describes real-time material requirements planning. |
| Sales | Sales master data, pricing, quotes, contracts, orders, billing, returns, and rebates, often connected as an order-to-cash process. |
| Human resources | Workforce processes such as onboarding, employee development, time and attendance, and payroll. SAP’s product descriptions also cover HR capabilities beyond the ERP core. |
| Other capabilities | Depending on product, edition, and scope, capabilities can include professional services, R&D and engineering, asset management, service, and project-related functions. |
SAP’s Cloud ERP tour details many of the ERP areas in this table; its HCM product information describes workforce-related capabilities.

What do FI, CO, MM, SD, and HCM mean?
These abbreviations remain common in SAP job descriptions and training: FI means financial accounting, CO controlling, MM materials management, SD sales and distribution, and HCM human capital management. They are useful terms to recognize, but modern SAP solutions are more integrated and naming varies by product and context. SAP’s overview lists these familiar abbreviations.

Is SAP an ERP or a CRM?
SAP is the vendor; ERP is a software category. SAP makes ERP products, including SAP S/4HANA, and also offers applications for other business functions. CRM—customer relationship management—is a distinct category centered on customer-facing work. A company may use SAP products for ERP, CRM, or other needs, but “SAP” by itself does not identify one specific category or application.
What is the difference between SAP S/4HANA Public Edition and Private Edition?
SAP describes both as cloud options for S/4HANA, but they have different operating models. “Public” refers to the shared cloud infrastructure model, not public access to a company’s data; SAP says tenant data is separated. The choice depends on an organization’s needs for standardization, tailoring, control, and operations rather than one edition being universally better.
| Consideration | Public Edition | Private Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | SaaS on shared cloud infrastructure, with tenant data separated. | Private managed cloud in a dedicated environment. |
| Customization and control | Customization is typically more limited. | Offers greater tailoring and control. |
| Updates and maintenance | SAP applies updates and maintenance across tenants. | Not stated in the cited SAP overview. |
| Potential fit | Organizations suited to a more standardized SaaS model. | Organizations that need a dedicated environment or more flexibility to tailor the system. |

How can you learn SAP or plan an implementation?

For a print introduction, SAP PRESS lists SAP S/4HANA: An Introduction, fifth updated and revised edition (2025), a 744-page hardcover covering areas such as finance, manufacturing, supply chain, sales, HCM, architecture, deployment, extensibility, and implementation preparation. See the SAP PRESS book page for its description and current availability.
For an organization
SAP says its service partners may help with strategic consulting, system design, solution integration, and implementation. When assessing a partner, match its experience to your industry, geography, existing systems, and project scope. SAP’s partner directory is a starting point for finding providers; it does not by itself establish that a partner is right for a specific project.
