Original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, and Nintendo 2DS systems use a full-size SD card; New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, and New Nintendo 2DS XL use microSD. For either family, the straightforward choice is an SDHC or microSDHC card, respectively, with a capacity of 4–32 GB. Nintendo does not consider SDXC or microSDXC cards compatible. Check your console before buying
The card format is determined by the console family, not just the fact that it is a 3DS. Check the model name printed on the system before ordering:

| Console models | Card slot format | Recommended search |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS | Full-size SD | 32GB SDHC memory card |
| New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 2DS XL | microSD | 32GB microSDHC memory card |
The original-model family can also use a microSD card inserted into a full-size SD adapter. New-model systems take microSD directly. Nintendo lists standard SD or microSD cards up to 2 GB as compatible too, but SDHC and microSDHC cover the 4–32 GB range most buyers will be looking for. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance
Choose SDHC or microSDHC, not SDXC
For an original 3DS, 3DS XL, or 2DS, choose a full-size SDHC card rated from 4 GB through 32 GB. For a New 3DS-family system, choose a microSDHC card in that same capacity range. Nintendo identifies 32 GB as the upper limit in its compatibility guidance; SDXC and microSDXC cards are not considered compatible. A 64 GB card is typically an SDXC card, so it is not the ordinary plug-in upgrade to buy for these consoles. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance

What “best” means for a 3DS card
Compatibility is the dependable buying criterion: match the card’s physical size and SD standard to the console, then stay within the supported capacity. The cited Nintendo guidance does not identify a speed-class winner, establish a gameplay improvement from a faster card, or compare current brands by value. Paying extra for a card marketed as faster is therefore not supported here as a way to improve 3DS gameplay.
Nintendo also does not guarantee that every third-party card will work. Its guidance describes compatible card types rather than promising that every retail product will function. Choose a reputable seller and confirm that the listing says SDHC or microSDHC and no more than 32 GB; do not treat a brand name alone as proof of compatibility.

Nintendo’s tested examples are historical, not a current ranking
Nintendo UK’s support page for the New Nintendo 3DS family lists tested 16 GB and 32 GB SanDisk Extreme-family cards and an 8 GB Toshiba card. The page cautions that product specifications can change and that performance is not guaranteed. These are examples from Nintendo’s published testing, not a current best-card list or a guarantee for a specific product sold today. Nintendo UK’s compatible microSD card page

Move data when replacing a card
If you are upgrading or replacing a card, Nintendo’s migration guidance says to use a computer and copy every folder from the old card to the new one. Its examples include 16 GB and 32 GB replacement cards. Follow the instructions for your console family and retain the original card until you have confirmed that the copied data is accessible.
